"As the World Turns" Goes Dark

For 54 years, CBS took viewers to the town of Oakdale, Ill., home of "As the World Turns."

On Friday, after almost 14,000 episodes, the legendary soap opera aired its final episode.

Soaps, which once ruled daytime television, have been on the decline for several years. At the height of their popularity, 40 years ago, there were 19 on TV. That number is down to six.

And Friday, "As the World Turns," one of the most successful of them all, fell victim to TV's tough new economic realities.

"It's all about the bottom line," explains the show's executive producer, Christopher Goutman. "Scripted drama in daytime is a tough proposition, because it's expensive to produce, and I understand that. We are a victim of the times."

In May, the cast of "As the World Turns" came together one last time and posed for a final photo, in New York.

Ellen Dolan, who played Margo, tried to fight off tears as she said, "Today, it just feels like a celebration. We've all gotten to..." Then, emotions got to her, as she said, dabbing at her eyes, "OK. It's not a good day."

Eileen Fulton, who portrayed Lisa Grimaldi, went even further, saying, "The show ending is really tragic. I hate that it's ending."

Originally broadcast live in 1956, "As the World Turns" was the first half-hour soap to hit the air. Until then, they'd all been 15 minutes. It quickly topped the daytime ratings, and remained the No. 1 daytime drama for two decades.

The show also launched the careers of some of Hollywood's biggest stars, including Meg Ryan, Marisa Tomei and Julianne Moore, who reflected warmly that she "loved that whole period of my life. And they were so kind to me and really treated me like a professional and a grownup at a time when I wasn't really either."

Like many soaps, "As the World Turns" narratives were full of scandal and sexuality.

At times, they were even groundbreaking The show introduced daytime's first gay character in 1988.

Despite critical success, winning four daytime Emmy awards for best drama, ratings and production budgets declined.

And, between takes for the final episode -- number 13,858 -- cast and crew took time for long, hug- and tear-filled goodbyes, and reflected on the show's remarkably long journey through television history.

Don Hastings, who was Bob Hughes, said to applause from the rest of the cast, "Hopefully, we'll all somewhere meet each other again and work again, and I wish you all the best. It's been wonderful."

I hate CBS! The only thing I will watch is Y&R and B&B and then the channel will be turned for the rest of the day. No one in my home will watch that channel and I don't care what special is coming on. Guiding Light was bad enough now, As the World Turns. Whats next? Y&R and B&B. These 4 soaps need to get together and become 1 BIG, HUGE,GIGANTIC, AMAZING soap opera. That's right! Put them all together and start letting the people in Oak dale and Springfield go see RELATIVES in LA and GENIA CITY. Make them all one big happy soap family and then wow there would be so many more people that everyone could sleep with. Seriously, you need to make that happen. Keep the characters all the same and mix the shows together. I know this is GENIUS. Write to me, I have some great ideas. Now, I agree there are enough talk shows and game shows and I don't know of anybody who watches them regularly and most don't watch at all. Find another way to put this soap back on the air and you need to do the same for Guiding Light. I started watching this with my grandmother at the age of three and she says I could name every character on all of the soaps on CBS. I became addicted to them and would even play sick just to stay home from school to see it, if I thought something really good was going to happen that day. Like so many other people this was always a conversation starter with my grandmothers, mother, aunts and friends. As I became older that continued plus it was the topic talked about with coworkers. Now that my dad retired 3 years ago, wow he knows every character to. If he misses an episode he has to ask what happened plus he even DVR's now just like I do if I'm not home. CBS, P&G whoever, figure out away to get the soaps back on the air. I don't care if you have to do the damn thing for free, because guess what? It's going to cost you more in the long run when thousands upon thousands of us fans, stop watching CBS all together. (Besides watching Y&R and B&B)Don't take those too because I think CBS would not exist anymore. To the cast and crew of ATWT God I wish you all the best and such luck. To the cast I prey to GOD I see all of you on something but I'd rather it be ATWT. Hey, I'd write the scenes/story lines/scripts, you name it, for free. I have always had some great ideas. You wouldn't have to pay me a dime. I love you all that much. Funny thing was I have always known what was going to happen from day to day and still loved every second of it. A huge fan for the past 30 years. God Bless you but not the people who pulled the plug on you, CBS.

Just to let you know that I cried over the last episode of AS THE WORLD TURNS, when came the time for me to watch this on Monday I realized that this is never going to be on again. Hoe could you do this to the faithful watchers that watch this every day. You are cruel. How are we supposed to know what happens to these characters? We did not get to see anyone get married, who was having babies what were they. Don't give us this crap about being expensive to produce every thing is. Well you ruined CBS for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG! I have watched this show from the time I was a small girl. I am so saddened by this show going off the air. Please bring it back. If you think that I will watch the game shows, think again. I will no longer have a need to turn the tv on until the evening shows are on.
Bring it back!!!!!!!!!

I am so sad -- I watched the very first show as an 8 year old girl. This show linked me to three generations of my own family -- my great grandmother, my grandmother, and my mother -- all now deceased. In some way this show kept them near me as I remember conversations we all had about the show -- mostly what Lisa was up to!!! P&G and CBS said they would seriously pursue finding a new network for this show. I'm very disappointed in those efforts. Please keep us posted on what the cast members are doing. And know I will NOT watch the new talk show -- BORING!

Wow after all these years the end is here. I have such good memories of watching this show, calling my aunt and mom on the phone asking if they saw what just happened. Watching James die and come back to life and even watching him turn young women old and young again.

I have enjoyed watching this show and even enjoy watch clips on facebook. Good luck to those of you who are not retiring from acting.

One of my earliest memories is of ATWT. My grandmother, aunts and Mother all watched the show. After my Father retired, he also became a devoted fan. Many times family discussions might start out with, "Did you see what Lisa did today?" I am a professional and have continued to watch the show on my lunch hour for many years, so I have probably kept up with ATWT for all 54 years. I feel like a close friend has moved and I will never hear from them again. Even though the characters are fictional, they represent relationships in our lives that are now lost. How sad for CBS to replace a constant in so many lives with meaningless gibberish that is on every other network. More and more people are turning off their televisions due to lack of creativity and original thought.

So sad to hear that CBS cancelled ATWT. I started watching ATWT about two years ago. I used to watch Y&R but the storyline became too far out for me. I kind of watch B&B but could easily live without seeing it. I think that ATWT had some awesome storylines and I enjoyed watching it. I can't believe CBS is replacing ATWT with yet another talk show or gameshow. I can't stand gameshows. How many talk shows do we really need? I guess I can just shut the tv off in the daytime. Thanks ATWT's cast and crew for all the awesome shows you made. I will miss it. :(
