Michelle Obama "Hell" Quote Met with Denials

Updated at 1:02 p.m. Eastern

French first lady and former model Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is quoted in a new book as saying that Michelle Obama told her life as a president's wife was "hell," according to the British tabloid Daily Mail.

But the White House and the French government later denied Mrs. Obama ever made the statement.

The book, "Carla and the Ambitious" claims Bruni-Sarkozy asked Mrs. Obama what life was like for her since her husband, Barack Obama, won the U.S. presidency.

"Don't ask. It's hell. I can't stand it," Mrs. Obama is reported as saying.

A spokesperson for Mrs. Obama flatly denied the quote.

"The First Lady never said that," Katie McCormick-Lelyveld said.

A spokesman for France's embassy in Washington, D.C., also said Thursday that the comment was never made and said Sarkozy-Bruni had nothing to do with the book's publication.

"Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy distances herself completely from the content of the book 'Carla and the Ambitious,' which was not authorized and the authors alone are responsible for its contents," says Emmanuel Lenain, the embassy spokesman. "The words attributed to the First Lady of the United States were never said."

The Daily Mail reported that "Carla and the Ambitious," by Michael Darmon and Yves Derai, was written "in collaboration with Miss Bruni."

The book says the exchange occurred during a visit to the White House by the French first couple last March.

Meanwhile, the author of another book, "Carla: A Secret Life" -- an unauthorized biography chronicling Bruni-Sarkozy's transformation from an allegedly tempestuous man-eater into an apparent meek, model spouse -- suggests she has become something of a political liability for her husband.

Author Besma Lahouri, who interviewed more than 100 people who have known the French first lady, but not Bruni-Sarkozy herself, said the former model's alleged rivalry with Michelle Obama has strained relations between the French and U.S. presidential couples, and Bruni-Sarkozy's image of distant, well-heeled perfection has kept her at arm's length from the French people.

I find the timing of this article is suspect. I see you haters! First Lady Michelle is about to hit the campaign trail with the Dems and the insecure rabid opposition is trying to drum up controversy. You people must have really short memories? It didn't work then and it won't work now. Come up with a better plan mo. f0s.

Rolling my eyes. Now that's a real dumb lie. Can you do any better than tell such an unbelievable pathetic lie? I mean really. When a person has to go as far as denying his own race in order to make his comment believable is beyond stupid. Next...

Carla "Antoinette" is at it again. It seems that France's first lady also gets bored ... being off center stage for more than a day. Wasn't she garnering criticism around Labor Day, from likes of the Iranian press to the usually circumspect Catherine Deneuve? Bruni-Sarkozy is a well-rewarded performer. If nothing else, this latest escapade will sell books. In the meantime we should try to ignore her.

Most of the haters here wouldn't make it one day in Michelle Obama's shoes. They are long on grousing and complaining and short on coming up with any decent solutions...and definitely on the short end of the stick when it comes to class. Michelle has more class in her little finger than most of those haters have their their entire bodies.

any wonder why they take so many holidays? They dislike the White House, and all it's glorious history. They seemingly feel uncomfortable within it's grand confines and it shows, because everything it represents, outshines their own petty beliefs. Those two (Mr & Mrs Obama) are nothing more than anti-colonialists to their very core.

I guess that makes Bush one of the same. Did you count how many vacays he took? Your ignorance is mind-blowing.

Weak argument. Other Presidents also took more than their share of holidays away from the White House. Reagan was at his Santa Barbara ranch so much, I was beginning to wonder if we moved the nation's capital to California....and the 1st Bushes spent a LOT of time in Kennebunkport, ME and Bush Jr was constantly running to Crawfordville, TX.

The headline for this story is erroneous. To all of you who eagerly read the headline but don't read the story.... the article reveals that Carla Bruni actually stated that she DID NOT say that at all. The Obama haters grab this tidbit of a lie and run with it for only one reason.

Yes Michelle it sure is hell, but I don't feel sorry for you. Especially when you can spend $350,000 for a shopping spree, and probably from the taxpayers money. For a woman who once claimed she hated the United States, you must be loving it now. How many homeless people would love to be in your shoes and have everything paid for. And by the way, are we paying also to have your mother living in the White House?
