Sainz: Others Balked at Jets' Behavior, Not Me

The New York Jets played their first game in their new stadium last night, but their inaugural contest was shrouded in scandal.

It wasn't a good start to the football season for the Jets, as they lost to the Baltimore Ravens 10-9. But CBS News correspondent Betty Nguyen reported on "The Early Show" that could be the least of their worries.

The National Football League (NFL) is investigating the team for potentially sexually harassing behavior toward a female reporter from Mexico.

Ines Sainz, a former Miss Spain and Miss Universe contestant, was on the sidelines during practice last Saturday when Jet players and coaches appeared to throw footballs in her direction.

Later, as she waited in the locker room to conduct an interview with quarterback Mark Sanchez, she was, she says, reportedly the target of catcalls and rude comments. She tweeted in Spanish: "I'm so uncomfortable! I'm in the Jets locker room waiting for Mark Sanchez and trying not to look around me."

And a few moments later, she wrote, "I want to cover my ears."

Women reporting on the sidelines and locker rooms is nothing new, but this incident is making for embarrassing headlines for both the Jets and NFL.

CBS Sports' Lesley Visser, a member of the Football Hall of Fame, and a pioneering female sports journalist, says there's no room for a "boys will be boys" attitude.

Visser said, "It is both personally and professionally discouraging. ... It's just not relevant here. These are professional athletes, professional reporters, and we're not in the seventh grade anymore."

Sainz says Jets owner Woody Johnson, has apologized and she has accepted, but that doesn't mean the team is out of legal trouble.

Wendy Murphy, a victims' rights advocate and former prosecuting attorney, said, "If people around her saw it as sexual harassment, it could be actionable even if she's not quite clear if she wants to file a lawsuit yet."

And the Jets could also face disciplinary action from the NFL, Nguyen reported. An investigation is underway. Officials will be interviewing both players and coaches today.

On "The Early Show" Sainz put the incident in her own words.

She said the minute she walked into the locker room, everyone started talking about her and made jokes.

IN heavily-accented English, she said, "I decided not to pay attention. I was focusing on my interview, so I go direct to the locker of room of Mr. Sanchez and I wait for him. But I believe that the rest of the media start to hear the different kind of things that I didn't hear. And sometime in a minute, a colleague (said), 'Come with me, and I'm so sorry. ... It's terrible. I feel sorry for you.' So I tried to say, 'Don't worry, I can handle the situation.' And that's it. And I don't even try to pay attention."

She added, "I was focused on my job, and try to not pretend not to be feeling bad in this situation."

"Early Show" co-anchor Erica Hill said, "A locker room is a tough place for anybody, male or female, and a lot of journalists say, 'Look, you don't want to be in there no matter what, whether you're male or female.'"

She asked Sainz, "You covered sports, though, in the past. Have you ever had a reaction like that before?"

Sainz, a veteran reporter for the Mexican network TV Azteca, said, "Well, actually, yes, I was covering for nine years. And probably, I have similar reactions in a different kind of sports. But, never, the vocabulary never so rude. ... I think that the media that in the locker room, what are really upset is about the vocabulary they used to refer to me. I want to say that I'm not the one who made the charge. Because I didn't even say, 'Hey, I feel bad for that, with NFL.' The ones that say that something is happened there is the rest of the media."

Hill also pointed out criticism on the sports blog Deadspin that said the behavior toward Sainz was disrespectful toward the team and football as a whole.

Sainz replied, "I am really grateful with her and with (The Association for Women in Sports Media), because they take it very seriously. And I believe that that is OK. Because, you are woman, and you are a professional way. I make everything in as a professional way that I needed to do. And not any woman deserves to be treated like this. You must deserve to treat like a professional."

Sainz said she hasn't received any comments about her outfit she was wearing that day. She wore a white, form-fitting collared shirt and jeans.

She said, "I think that each woman wants to be attractive, and I have nine years (in) my job. I have more than 250 interviews with the best players in the world for football, the most important sports. So it's my style. I never have any trouble like this. So I think that, don't you think that like a woman, that if you dress and feel good and go and be professional all the time, you deserve to be treated like this?"

Sainz said she doesn't plan to pursue any further action.

She said, "I really believe in what NFL decide(s). Because, they called on Sunday and I made a full declaration of the act -- like a witness. And they take very seriously, and I really believe that they find that they need to punish someone, they are going to do it. And if they find if it's not necessary, I really trust in what they say."

WELL.......They are the New York Jets.......it is not fair to expect any class from them. Mark Sanchez is probably embarrassed by their behaviour.

She's been harassed before - but not so 'rudely'. Hmmmm.

Translation: She's been treated like the sex object she's made herself into, but not, so far, by a bunch of millionaire athletes.

Looks like a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen. And if it did, I am sure feminist lawyers would be poised to sue men who dared to look at and comment about "the victim". If this is Ms. Sainz's idea of dressing professionally, I can only imagine what she wore to the job interview and why she got the job instead of a truly qualified journalist with credentials and experience. This is so typical of hypocritical feminist victimology-opportunism.

A locker room is where people take care of their private hygeine needs naked/semi-naked. Would you like it if somebody of the opposite sex with a microphone and camera showed up in YOUR locker room while you are taking a dump/peeing just so they can enhance their professional upward mobility? So please walk me through the logic that says this self-serving opportunity is applicable only to female reporters in men's locker rooms and not male reporters in women's locker rooms? Sorry, ladies - you can't have your c*** and eat it too.

There is a place and time to be dressed all sorts of different ways. I would dress the way she was dressed IF I was going out on the weekend. I would be dressed this way because I wanted to be noticed, to stand out from the other females. I would not wish to be thought of in a professional sense if I were to be dressed this way, I would not like to start talking about work dressed this way. I would not WORK dressed like this. Her employer should not be proud or encourage non-professional attire of any sort by any of their employees. Something tells me that they encourage it, and it is not for the sake of furthering her career. If I had dressed this way for any type of work function, my mentor would have pulled me aside and told me that PERCEPTION is very important, because that is all people have to go on if they don't know you. Once you are perceived "non-professional", well, that kind of sticks with you throughout your career.

Having said that, these football players aren't boys, they are men. They could have behaved as such, keeping their thoughts to themselves. I know in the 80's and 90's women fought hard to be able to cover sports as a man does, and they got treated as Ines, dressed in female business suits.

WAS REALLY UPSET AND IN DISBELIEVE WHEN I SAW AND HEARD THE THREE LADIES IN THE MORNING SHOW TODAY WEDNESDAY 9/15 QUESTIONED INES' WAY OF DRESSING...ARE YOU SERIOUS? THE 3 ?WOMEN? WHERE ALMOST IMPLYING THAT IT WAS HER FAULT SHE GOT HARASSED BECAUSE OF WHAT SHE WAS WEARING...PEOPLE, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO WEAR WHATEVER YOU LIKE OR NOTHING AT ALL AND STILL GET THE RESPECT AND TREATMENT THAT ANY WOMAN DESERVES!! THE THREE REPORTERS WERE COMPLITELY MISSING THE POINT HERE AND IT IS REALLY DISTURBING TO SEE THAT WOMEN ARE AGAINST WOMEN FOR BEING PRETTIER OR DRESSING SEXIER THAT OTHERS...THIS IS ABOUT SEXUAL HARASSMENT, THIS IS ABOUT MEN BEING MACHOS AND THINKING IT IS OK TO INSULT AND DENIGRATE A WOMAN...IT IS NOT!! IT IS SAD TO SEE THAT THIS IS HAPPENING HERE IN AMERICA A 1ST WORLD COUNTRY AND THERE ARE STILL QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RIGHT OR WRONG OF THIS SITUATION...I SEE IT REALLY CLEAR? IT IS WRONG!!

I agree the ladies seemed to be dismissive of her because she's a size two versus the fact some of the Jets were out of line. Despite Ms. Sainz thinking little of the situation, inspite of her attire and regardless of the fact that it was the Jets locker room, she did not deserve such treatment. Until we can figure out how to control 20-30 somethings' amped up behavior around pretty women this will always be an issue. The behavior is not right but lets be honest and not so sensitive and we'll see this for what it is! Testostorone heavy jocks acting like nuts and its always gonna be that way!

Stop screaming. Women are in charge of their own sexual expression. If you come across like a groupie, expect to be treated like one.

So what the men out there are saying is she deserved it. Well I wonder if you would feel the same way if it was your mother, daughter, or wife that had been treated that way just because she entered the boys lockeroom. A pig is a pig weather its in the lockeroom or on the farm. To say that she deserved it because of the way she is dressed. No wonder rape victims dont come forward with that kind of mentality.

There are dress codes in some work places. To me she was not dressed right. Now when we see women reporters on TV shows, the news ect... Are they dressed like that? Can they dress like that? I know some work places you have to wear a shirt and tie, skirt below your knees that's if you want a job. Respect the locker room, respect the game she was suppose to go interveiw the players, report on the game. Let's dress right for the sport and that includes V. Williams with the outfit she had on the other day. It's all about the game, not a modeling or fashion show.

What a vision. Her blouse unbuttoned down to her belly button, oh I'm sorry, it's not quite that far down, but really? Are we supposed to take this chick seriously? My family's first reaction when I showed them the Early Show picture of Ms. Sainz was, "Good God lady, put those things away!" Why is anyone having this discussion? It's ridiculous!

The comments are degrading because she's half naked. Oh, for Pete's sake!

Hey ! how sad is to read that most of your comments are so degrading either because she is a woman or because she is mexican, or both. Some mentioned that couldn?t understand her english, well most americans just speak english and make no effort to learn anything else. Some others didn?t like her outfit, wasn?t she in the land of freedom and human rights?.She was not half naked, she was wearing a shirt and jeans. Ines has been quite polite and she does not deserve more rudness. What is going on with you people?. Ines I stand for you.

soooo iritating!!! this chick is walking around in the tightest clothes & her shirt unbuttoned down to her belly button... yet, she is screaming "foul" because she is in a men's locker room & the men are looking at her. give me a break!!! she knows very well that is the exact attention she is seeking. it's like, she would like to be able to walk around the locker room naked in front of the guys & then complain about them looking.
