Belgian Report: Suicides Tied to Priest Abuse

(AP)  Updated 1:20 p.m. ET

Hundreds of sex abuse victims have come forward in Belgium with harrowing accounts of molestation by Catholic clergy that reportedly led to at least 13 suicides and affected children as young as two, a special commission said Friday.

Professor Peter Adriaenssens, chairman of the commission, said the abuse in Belgium may have been even more rampant than the 200-page report suggests.

"Reality is worse than what we present here today because not everyone shares such things automatically in a first contact with the commission," he told reporters.

Adriaenssens, a child psychiatrist who has worked with trauma victims for 23 years, said nothing had prepared him for the stories of abuse that blighted the lives of victims.

"We don't just talk about touching. We are talking about oral and anal abuse, forced masturbation and mutual masturbation. We talk about people who have gone through serious abuse," Adriaenssens said.

Most of the abuse happened during the 1960s and 1970s, he said.

The Roman Catholic Church in Belgium experienced the findings as "a body blow," Adriaenssens said.

Belgian Archbishop Andre-Joseph Leonard said he would react on Monday to the report. The Vatican had no immediate comment.

But Tournai Bishop Guy Harpigny, who deals with the issue for the church, praised Adriaenssens's work and told VRT television that "now, the time has come to listen to the victims."

The report's findings are the latest embarrassment for Belgium's Catholic Church, which is still reeling after the April resignation of Bruges Bishop Roger Vangheluwe, who admitted to having sexually abused a nephew for years when he was a priest and bishop.

Friday's report said 507 witnesses came forward with stories of molestation at the hands of clergy over the past decades. It says those abused included children who were two, four, five and six years old.

Family members or friends said 13 victims committed suicide that "was related to sexual abuse by clergy," the report said. Six other witnesses said they had attempted suicide.

"It is notable how often one issue comes back in the witness reports: the high number of suicides," the report said.

The number of those coming forward with their stories and testimonies, however, could be only a fraction of those actually abused, Adriaenssens said. He added several priests cooperated with the panel, which had the support of the Belgian church.

"We saw how priests, called up by the commission and asked to help seek the truth, were willing to set up the list of 10, 15, 20 victims they abused during boarding school while the commission knew only of one," he said.

Archbishop Leonard, who was appointed earlier this year, said he will come forward with a new initiative Monday on how to deal with cases of abuse, prevent further abuse and help victims seek closure.

His spokesman Jurgen Mettepenningen said the archbishop didn't comment Friday so as not to distract attention from the report's contents.

Leonard's predecessor, Cardinal Godfried Danneels, acknowledged Wednesday that damage control often took precedence in Belgium over concerns for victims in sexual abuse cases involving clergy.

The crisis in the Belgian church was exacerbated last month, when secret tapes were published of Danneels speaking with the man whom Vangheluwe abused and suggesting a cover-up until Vangheluwe was to retire in 2011. Danneels said Wednesday he should have asked Vangheluwe to resign immediately.

The Catholic Church is the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church founded by Jesus Christ. There never was nor will there ever be another.
To be separated from the Catholic Church is to that extent to be separated from Jesus Christ and outside of his salvation.
God Bless the one true Church.
Any idiot who claims that faithful Catholics and the Pope are guilty of obstruction of justice are ignorant bigots who are capable of nothing but heaping their pathetic anti-Catholic bile at the one Church of Christ.
They know nothing of the truth and refuse to learn the truth.

This twisted thinking is what keeps this church alive.

The Catholic Church is a conspicuously hypocritical, medieval, morally corrupt, covetous, sanctimonious institution, complicit in abhorrent criminal activities involving protecting and not exposing pedophile priests. Its survival over the centuries has continued through the exploitation of human frailties, fear, and the promise of eternal salvation for those whose ignorance and/or innocence is such as to blind them to such scandalous deceit.

To quote the Greek philosopher Plato ... ?Ignorance, the root and stem of all evil.? That is the foundation on which this church was built and has moved on over the millennia with its insidious ambitions into the lives of so many unfortunates. Widespread ignorance in our societies and the unquestioning acceptance of religious authority blinds people to the truth ... that is how this church survives.

When the Vatican, the very ?root? of the Catholic Church, is involved in forgoing justice for the sake of reputation, is not the end of this institution near ... unfortunately not, for man is, for the most part, not a clear thinking, rational animal at all times ... there will always be blind followers who will keep this church alive and allow this institution to parasitize more innocents.

Some of the most dangerous concoctions of the human mind are the concept of God and organized religion.

Organized religion is a monumental fraud perpetrated on those seemingly devoid of clear, intelligent, rationale thought.

waynesnipper,
Nothing you write is true. Not a single thing. It's remarkable that a person could be as wrong as you have shown yourself to be.

I looked in vain in your screed to find one true thing and found nothing.

Anti-Catholic bigots and Christ-haters like you deserve the sad and pitiful life you lead and I have no sympathy for your slavish devotion to willful ignorance.

I have some advice for you - read some actual history and learn about the true 2,000 year story of the Catholic Church rather than reading Jack Chick comic books like you apparently have.

What an ignorant bigot you are. And you stand for nothing - no truth, no knowledge and no lasting understanding.

The Catholic Church is complicit in abhorrent criminal activities involving protecting and not exposing pedophile priests. This Pope and so many of his ?priestly flock? are clearly guilty of both obstruction of justice and aiding/abetting a crime, at the very least, and/or the repugnant abuse of minors, and should be held accountable to the laws of the land. Their secrecy and lies to avoid prosecution are pathetic attempts to maintain the century?s old ?status quo?. Enough is enough ... get on with it ... arrests and charges should ensue. Freedom is a luxury that should not be afforded to those who have perpetrated such evil while masquerading as pious souls.

When the ?health and wellbeing? of the Catholic Church and its administrators takes precedent over the physical and emotional health of its child victims of abuse, it is clear this church boarders on moral bankruptcy. Centuries have passed with no correction to its ?modus operandi? leading to the ruination of countless lives. The time has come for retribution.

Hopefully, Karma and/or the judicial courts will deal with those who purvey(ed) their pathetically deceitful, self-righteous religious dogma, while simultaneously preying upon the naivet? of adults, and the innocence and trust of the most vulnerable in our society ... children.

The Catholic church is an evil church and always has been. I can't understand anyone belonging to this church. Their evil goes all the way back to the Crusades.

You know nothing about the history of the Church or the history of the Crusades so stop embarrasing yourself by pretending that you do.
Your statement about the Catholic Church is what is evil here.
We have been working for two decades to uncover the truth about the clerical abuse scandal in the Church and have made tremendous strides in preventing this from ever happening in the future.
That is more than I can say about the horrendous sexual abuse in the Public School System, and in families around the country, where the amount of abuse is many, many times higher than what has happened in the Catholic Church.
