Obama Takes the GOP to Task on Economy, Taxes

By
CBSNews
(AP)  President Barack Obama is taking his case against Republican to millions of Americans on Friday, faulting the party for refusing to help him turn around the sluggish economy or support some proposed new tax breaks for businesses the party has backed in the past.

Facing devastating poll numbers and prospects of big losses, Democrats are in danger of losing control of the House of Representatives in November congressional elections. In a nationally televised news conference from the White House, Obama is trying to convince voters that they have a choice between going back to Republican policies that led to the economic crisis or going forward with policies he says will grow the economy over the long term.

Before taking questions, Obama was to open the session with a statement on the economy and the stakes in the elections and, according to a White House official, announce that he has chosen one of his longtime economic advisers, Austan Goolsbee, to be the chairman of his Council of Economic Advisers. The official spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity because the formal announcement had not been made.

Goolsbee, 41, a University of Chicago professor of economics, was Obama's senior economic adviser during the 2008 presidential campaign. He already has been confirmed to the council by the Senate and will need no further confirmation. He replaces Christina Romer, who left the administration last week to return to teaching at the University of California, Berkeley.

Feeling pressure amid slumping polls to show he is doing everything possible to repair the economy, Obama this week unveiled a tax-and-spend package that would expand and permanently extend a tax credit for research and development that lapsed in 2009, let businesses write off 100 percent of their investments in equipment and plants through 2011, and spend $50 billion (euro39.3 billion) immediately on highway, rail and airport projects.

House Republican leader John Boehner of Ohio has offered an alternative plan: freezing tax rates for two years and cutting back government spending to 2008 levels.

Obama also wants to let taxes rise next year on the highest wage earners while keeping existing tax cuts for families with annual incomes of $250,000 or less and individuals making $200,000 a year maximum. Republicans insist on keeping the lower tax rates for higher incomes, arguing that doing so would help small businesses too. Obama argues that's a financial burden the country can't afford to bear.

By law, taxes will rise for everyone next year unless Congress acts.

But even some of Obama's own Democrats and his former budget director, Peter Orszag, have suggested a compromise that would temporarily extend all the tax cuts that were enacted in 2001 and 2003 under President George W. Bush, to leave more money in consumers' pockets and give the economy some breathing room, before the tax cuts are allowed to expire entirely in a year or two.

Obama campaigned for president on a promise not to raise taxes on the middle class. He insisted Thursday during a speech in Cleveland that tax cuts for that income group must not be held "hostage any longer."

At the news conference, Obama also is expected to challenge Republicans to allow a Senate vote on a bill that calls for about $12 billion in tax breaks for small businesses. It also includes a $30 billion fund to encourage banks to lend to small business. Republicans have likened the bill to the unpopular bailout of the financial industry.

Obama has blamed Republicans for stalling the bill. The measure is on the agenda when the Senate returns next week. The House has already passed many of the provisions in the Senate bill.

Friday's news conference will be just the second time this year that Obama has met alone with reporters at the White House.

He has appeared before the White House press corps several times with visiting foreign leaders. Obama last held a solo White House news conference in May to discuss the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Polls have shown a steady slippage in Obama's approval ratings and an accompanying rise in Republican prospects for winning House and Senate seats in November.

Wait, he takes 20 months before he decides to do anything other than give money away, and now he blames the republicans for telling him his plans were no good to start with! He didn't want the republican plans, or their votes, they struggled to get votes from dems on many of the plans, and bribed them to get their vote, and now it is the repuclicans fault because his plans have failed! more left wing politics, more lies. Throw all the politians, put them on a single term, an get out. These posts wer not intended for life long jobs. Money corrupts! How do these politians become millonaires on their salaries? If in for one term, there is no need to start raising money for their next election, they can actually do work they were elected to do!

I have no perfect rosy opinion of the Founders. So, you continue to be wrong. Every time you post, you are wrong, it seems.

-------------

Poor Mort. I guess you don't call your rants about how you will only support candidates that are like the founding fathers and will NEVER EVER violate the constitution...yet the facts show the founding fathers were not like this.

Do you not recall this conversation????? I guess not.

You are the one that is lying, based on just this post here. Because nothing you posted is true!

And I ignore NO facts about the Founders. Unlike you, I have studied all of them most of my adult life. I have read all of their published works, diaries, etc. I have read congressional publications until I am blue in the face.

Unlike you, I actually have the facts. And the Founders would be embarassed by most of what we have done starting with Woddrow Wilson and moving on until today.

You forgot to mention you were in the military for decades so you know what true patriotism really is...lol

poor mort.

I have given you facts about the founding fathers that goes against your perfect image you have of these people, yet you blindly go about like this never happen. You just return to the rosy image you created in your mind of these people.

You see, I dont glorify any man. Which is why, when GOPers run around and say "Reagan this and Reagan that..." I just look at them like they are nuts. Yes, Reagan was the best persident of last century and the best the GOP has ever had. But, that isnt saying much. Last century was abysmal when it came to presidents.

So, I give Reagan his due where he deserves it. And I slam him where he deserves it.

I slam Thomas Jefferson wehrre he deserves it. And James Madison. And the rest.

You continue to be fogged in the head instead of the truth. You continue to look at me and others that disagree with your liberal Marxist ideology and miss who we are what we are truly about...and you will never be able to defeat us.

Are you truly wanting an answer for once? Or do you just want to say stuff to hear yourself think and continue to ignore the facts? If it is the second one, then I owe you nothing.

--------

I want to know if we are even discussing facts or just your take (or something you hear on Rush) on what you think Obama said again.

But you right you don't owe me anything. But you do owe it to yourself to know what you are talking 'bout.

It is up to you if you provide the quote or not. You should at least care if the quote you are talking about actually exists or not.

Did you type all this or did you copy and paste this? Since you know, I hope you will tell us.

I think this will just be another example of some lazy conservative taking the comments of some other conservative at their word and reposting (without giving credit to the original author).

You notice Obama being two faced again?

First off, he hammered Bush for the taxcuts, saying they wouldnt help the economy AND it was only taxcuts for the rich. But then he reversed course on two things there.

What are they? Well first, he said it was only taxcuts for the rich by Bush. But now he says that he wants to only keep the taxes on the rich and let the taxcuts for the other people stay. How can that be that other people besides the "rich" got taxcuts, when he clearly said as a senator that it was ONLY taxcuts for the rich?

Second backflip is he said taxcuts wouldnt help the economy. And now, he wants to keep some of the taxcuts to help the economy.
-------

I hate to ask, but what specific quote of Obama's are you referring to in this comment?

Is that asking for to much again? I know your are more comfortable with your talking-head inspired generalization about Obama, but give it a try.

Again, you only attack. You never post facts.

-----

Stop lying Mort.

You just like to twist and turn away from the facts.

Like you can't admit that conservative talk shows and TV are so popular because conservative needs constant guidance and reassurance.

Like how you are so willing to ignore facts about the founding fathers so you don't have to change your child-like vision of them.

Obama Takes America to Task on Economy, Taxes

Below is Obama's Master Plan . Believe Me , I Know ..........

Overwhelm the system
Barach Obama is no fool. He is not incompetent. To the contrary. He knows exactly what he's doing. He is purposely overwhelming the U.S. economy to create systemic failure, economic crisis and social chaos -- thereby destroying capitalism and our country from within.

Barack Obama (Columbia University, class of '83). Obama is following the plan of Cloward & Piven, two professors at Columbia University. They outlined a plan to socialize America by overwhelming the system with government spending and entitlement demands. Add up the clues below. Taken individually they're alarming. Taken as a whole, it is a brilliant, Machiavellian game plan to turn the United States into a socialist/Marxist state with a permanent majority that desperately needs government for survival ... and can be counted on to always vote for bigger government. Why not? They have no responsibility to pay for it.

-- Universal health care. The health care bill had very little to do with health care.? It had everything to do with unionizing millions of hospital and health care workers, as well as adding 15,000 to 20,000 new IRS agents (who will join government employee unions). Obama doesn't care that giving free health care to 30 million Americans will add trillions to the national debt. What he does care about is that it cements the dependence of those 30 million voters to Democrats and big government. Who but a socialist revolutionary would pass this reckless spending bill in the middle of a depression?

-- Cap and trade. Like health care legislation having nothing to do with health care, cap and trade has nothing to do with global warming. It has everything to do with redistribution of income, government control of the economy and a criminal payoff to Obama's biggest contributors. Those powerful and wealthy unions and contributors (like GE, which owns NBC, MSNBC and CNBC) can then be counted on to support everything Obama wants. They will kick-back hundreds of millions of dollars in contributions to Obama and the Democratic Party to keep them in power. The bonus is that all the new taxes on Americans with bigger cars, bigger homes and businesses helps Obama "spread the wealth around."
