Pakistan: Beck Should Denounce Quran Burning

Pakistan's ambassador to the United States is calling on conservative radio and television host Glenn Beck to denounce the planned burning of the Quran to show that Americans are tolerant of other faiths.

"I think it would help if Mr. Glenn Beck came out against it, and said that people of faith do not burn the books of people of other faith," Husain Haqqani told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Beck earlier this week wrote in an Internet blog posting that burning the Quran is like burning the flag or the Bible - something people can do in the United States, but shouldn't.

"Our good Muslim friends and neighbors will be saddened," he wrote. "It makes the battle that they face inside their own communities even harder."

It was unclear whether Haqqani was aware of the blog posting. A telephone message left with the Pakistani Embassy was not immediately answered.

The diplomat warned that if Florida Pastor Terry Jones goes ahead with his plans to burn copies of the Quran, it will set off a massive reaction in parts of the Muslim world.

Jones has said he is still determined to go ahead with the protest at his small church despite pressure from the White House and other U.S. officials to cancel it. Military leaders have warned that burning the Muslim holy book will inflame extremists and could trigger repercussions against U.S. troops and citizens abroad.

"The United States should live up to its high ideals and all these people who are against religious extremism and intolerance in the Muslim world should also speak up against meaningless gestures such as burning the Quran," said Haqqani.

He said Pakistani leaders understand the concept of free speech and will do what they can to manage the reaction in their country.

I never intended to burn a quran, until the muslums started with all their threats of what they would do to us. Gen Patraeus, good soldier, I'm sure you said what your commander in chief told you to say. As far as causing attacks on our troops, being there and being American is what is causing the threat to our troops. Give up the cobalt, gold, uranium and plutonium that was found in afghanistan and bring our troops home. As far as not knowing who the terrorists are, kill the ones shouting death to America, those are the bad guys General. Oh wait, your commander in chief is a sympathizer with those guys, better have your troops send a memo up the chain of command, zip that critic off to dirnsa and then run their response back down the chain of command to let that guard know if he can return fire.

Our Constitution was used as the reason for the Ground Zero mosque to be built. The opposition's sentiment to it not being built at its proposed location was assailed as being wrong, even though the opposition saw the plans as being insensitive and intolerant. Still, it was in their Constitutional Right to build the mosque where it wanted. What Jones is advocating is also insensitive and intolerant, yet within his Constitutional Right. Interesting dilemma. Like many say, sometimes something is "right", but that doesn't mean it's "right" to do. There's an opportunity for both sides to learn. Maybe Jones is bluffing to force the issue of religious intolerance and insensitivity and the Constitution.

Perhaps if we all simply ignored this nutcase, then no one would care.
If they hold a book burning and nobody shows up, does it make smoke.

Jones is more about Jones than any statement he claims to want to make. It's about ego, fame, and he hopes soon to follow, fortune. Isn't that the pattern of all these people with big egos, be they TV evangelists, cult leaders, politicians and would-be politicians. These people are so imbued with their own sense of self-importance that they would just as soon see their own mothers dead or start a global nuclear war, just so they are famous and rich.
