Axl Rose Tries Dublin's Patience, Leaves Stage

(AP)  Axl Rose, it seems, needs a little more patience - and a much louder alarm clock.

The 48-year-old singer of hard-rock band Guns N' Roses irritated thousands of his Dublin fans at the 02 Arena on Wednesday night by showing up nearly an hour late - a recurring problem on his band's European tour - and then walking off after an unruly minority in the crowd hurled water bottles on the stage.

Most of the fans left, but Irish concert promoters MCD wouldn't let Rose leave until he finished the gig. The band went back on stage an hour later to a mostly empty venue and didn't stop playing until nearly 1 a.m.

MCD and the 02 issued a joint statement criticizing Rose for having "a long history for being late on stage," but emphasized that "no artist should be subjected to missiles and unknown substances being thrown at them."

Rose's patience snapped after he warned the crowd to stop throwing things on stage.

"Here is the deal. One more bottle up here and we go. We don't want to go. Your choice," he told the crowd during an abrupt break to the band's second song, "Welcome to the Jungle."

But when introducing his other band members before a following number, up came another bottle - and off Rose went to a chorus of boos. "OK, that's it. Good night. Have a nice evening," he said.

Politicians called on the promoters to refund tickets that cost an average of $92. MCD declined to say whether anyone would get their money back.

"Reports say that the lights came on and the security people told concertgoers to go home. Confusion reigned and thousands of fans had left by the time the band came back again on stage to complete their set," Irish senator Michael McCarthy said.

Rose is the only remaining original member of Guns N' Roses, which was founded in Los Angeles in 1985 and achieved chart-topping successes with its first two albums, "Appetite for Destruction" in 1987 and the double-album "Use Your Illusion" in 1991.

The band effectively collapsed in the mid-1990s and Rose became a Malibu semi-recluse. He re-emerged in recent years with a completely new band that, after missing a decade of production deadlines, unveiled the album "Chinese Democracy" in 2008. It has received generally positive reviews but sold poorly compared to the band's heyday.

The European tour has been marred by late starts.

At the first stop Aug. 27, an open-air festival in Reading, west of London, Guns N' Roses arrived an hour late and had their microphones and amplifiers cut off by organizers during their encore.

Two nights later in the northern English city of Leeds, Guns N' Roses again was ordered to cut its performance concert a half-hour short because of an hour-late start. The tour has 22 cities in 13 more countries to go.

Such tardiness is nothing new for Rose. Guns N' Roses kept Irish fans waiting two extra hours during its 1992 European tour.

Yeah, yeah, big concerts rarely start on time. But an hour and a half? This guy just doesn't respect his fans in a way that most people would consider "normal", because Axl has never been a "normal" guy. Nonetheless, when you pay for that ticket, you should know what you may be getting yourself into. There is no excuse for throwing bottles. I have loved Guns N Roses since Welcome to the Jungle debuted on MTV at 5 am in 1987...but I'm not going to pay for a ticket to see Axl because he is known for behaving this way. Slash and Duff, on the other hand, I will pay to see in any outfit, any time. Even if he's battling a heroin addiction, I know Slash will show up at a reasonable time (not that he's currently battling one now, folks...just speaking of his past).

Just want to say that there are many people who love Axl and the new lineup of GN'R. I for one, saw them twice this year and waited a lot longer than the drunks in Dublin.. It is true that when he steps on the stage it is so amazing that real fans dont give two hoots about waiting. When you are going to one of their concerts you know how things go. Just plan ahead and have some fun. The band is at their best! If some idiots had thrown objects when we were there, the fans would have stopped them. Its called common courtesy. who throws stuff? We arent in kindergarten anymore, kids...time to grow up. If you dont like the way it is, stay away. Let the real fans buy the tickets. They will sell out the venues easily.

Axl Rose is awesome, amazing, wonderful, legendary, great, ect, ect.
He has been giving us beautiful music for a long time so what if we have to put up with a whole wasted hour at the beginning of the show, he makes up for it the moment he walks out on stage. Get a refund from the jerks who threw the bottles. Rock on Axl!

He was one hour late in starting the show, then a few idiots started throwing stuff (theres always a few idiots in every large group). So he takes a 90 minute intermission without telling anyone.

He treats his audiences so badly, people traveled from all over Ireland and abroad to see this show, taking time off work, booking hotel rooms, then after axel storms off they are all told to leave, "show is over" by the staff.

Next day they find out Axel came back on and they missed it...

I haven't been to one YET that was more than 20-30 min late in starting, and for legit reasons. More often than not they start pretty close to the time they are supposed to. I've been to ONE concert many years ago that was over an hour late starting...and I demanded my money back on my way out the door because it hadn't even started by then. It's one thing if there's something legitimately wrong with the electronics or something like that...then the promoters can explain to the audience what's going on...doesn't sound like that happened here. This sounds like nothing more than unprofessional and disrespectful behavior on his (the band's) part, but that's still no reason for the audience to be throwing things, simply walk out!
