Greek Fur Farms Raided, 50,000 Minks Set Loose

Police say break-ins at two fur farms have set more than 50,000 minks on the loose in northern Greece.

A statement from local police says the break-ins occurred Friday and Saturday near the city of Kastoria, which is the center of Greece's fur industry.

Regional TV channels showed farm employees chasing the animals with fishing nets on Monday.

The National Fur Breeders' Association says most of the released animals are likely to die in the late-August heat. It says the cost to the farm owners could pass euro1 million ($1.27 million).

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident. But an animal rights group, calling itself the "Hawks of Reprisal," said it was responsible for a similar break-in last year.

I'm sure these Greek Greenie PETA types were singing "Born, Freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" as they watched these 50,000 animals scramble into the wild.

99% of them dying of heat or thirst or starvation or hit by cars, all within the first week.

Yeah, that seems humane. Nice move, hippies!

But you know what?

I'll let you in on a secret: animal activists are actually smarter than minks!
Yes, I know you are all shocked by this revelation. I am too. But I swear, it's true!

It's all well and good to be against the fur industry but the ones who did this are not for the mink. Most of these animals will die or disrupt the ecosystem. They just don't get it.

This proves just how brain dead these "activest" are. They break in and release 50,000 animals that are going to die from the Greek heat. Wonder if they are going to protest themselves for being "animal murderers" as these clowns call others.

Its sad we cant put a couple of these animal activists in a cage and then toss in 100 starving minks. Now, THAT is a show I'd buy a ticket for.

That was real smart. They choose interesting ways of fighting the system. They will not bankrupt these companies and they are attacking the victims not the source of their grudge. These animals are not wild and therefore most, meaning well over 90%, will die. They will die horrible deaths from hyperthermia and starvation since they are carniverous and the local food chain will not support such an influx even if they underestimated the number. Any that do survive will just throw off the regional food chain and endanger many other species. I hope they catch these idiots and lock them up.

...they don't care at all what really happens to the animals...they only care about trying to make a statement, which ends up being destructive and counter-productive...

Very true.

These eco-terrorists cause more problems and harm than good. What they're doing is inhumane than what the furriers do to these animals; the animal is only good for its fur, anyway. Imagine these cowards going into tribal or indigenous situations where furs are needed for warmth and human survival? If they had their way, these eco-terrorists would make sure the animals were spared and the humans died from the bitterly cold elements.

The 50,000 number comes from estimates supplied by AirPhotosLive.com. The Minks, convinced that CBS hates the country and is anti-fur are claiming 300 to 600 thousand.

LMAO. As opposed to the air-conditioned fur farm where they'd be safe and sound?

Indeed. Mink produce their nice furry WINTER coats when it's chilly. I don't think it naturally gets very chilly in Greece, so air conditioning would be a likely method of encouraging their fluffiness.

My God, you're thick. I'm going to spell it out for you, alright? Take it nice and slow, read each word very carefully. Ready? Here goes: I think the minks would rather take their chances in the heat than face certain death in the fur farm.

Yes, some of these minks could die, and others will be FREE. And yes, it could cause other problems. But the point is to cause enough problems for these businesses, that like to torture animals, so they STOP what they are doing, or become bankrupt.

I fail to see why animals need to suffer for us humans.

Remember that next time you put on leather shoes or wear a leather belt. Next you people will be going on about us harming the poor cotton plants for our clothing or how chickens suffer emotional distress having their eggs gathered up over and over. I don't think an animal should suffer needlessly myself. But I doubt they're skinning them alive.

You have absolutely no idea what is being done to them. Maybe you should do a little research.
