Two new brands were added to salmonella-linked egg recall centering on two Iowa farms, according to an unpdated list provided by the Egg Safety Center.

Wright County Egg, whose plants produced 380 million of the 550 million recalled eggs, said it has found salmonella in the Cardenas Market brand and are beginning a voluntary recall. Affected cartons have the plant number 1026 on the side and Julian dates between 136 and 228.

Trafficanda Egg Ranch also confirmed salmonella in some of its eggs from Wright County. Affected plant numbers are 1026, 1413, 1720, 1942 and 1946, with Julian dates between 136 and 229.

The massive recall of more than half a billion eggs began Aug. 13 when Wright County recalled 380 million eggs due to a salmonella outbreak. Hillandale Farms recalled 170 million eggs a week later.

Wright County is a sprawling plant based in Galt, Iowa with seven million chickens that produce 5.5 million eggs a day. Hillandale Farms is also based in Iowa. The Centers for Disease Control has said the recalled eggs have been linked to more than 1,300 reported cases of salmonella poisoning, and the number would likely grow.

The cause of the outbreak is still unknown, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

phxfire - check your local farmers market or craigslist. lots of people sell pastured eggs on craigslist. not always are they certified organic, but they are raised humanely and as nature intended. NOT in battery cages eating crap and suffering miserably.

Salmonella was found in chicken feed at the egg factory-farms.
.
The source of the Salmonella seems to be a feed "supplement" provided by "Bi-Products" corporation.
.
From Bi-Products website: "Central Bi Products is a full service rendering company that operates two complexes, one in Redwood Falls, MN and another in Long Prairie, MN. Both complexes operate rendering processes for multi-species raw material, poultry raw material, feathers and blood. Each of these processes is supported by its own protein blending plants that provides total protein product segregation."
.
.
In other words people... Like most chicken factories, they were feeding cattle and pig guts, feathers and other bilogical trash to their chickens.
.
Bon Appetit. I'm glad we raise our own poultry on the open range.

People in this country ought to teach the egg industry a very big lesson. And that being a boycott of all eggs until these and all companies change they way they house the chickens. It's god**** sickening what they are doing. Remember there's more of us than there is of them!!!

Gad, you people are incredible. Bush left us with an economy that is shot, that means less money, you complain about too much gov't taxes/spending, but you want ICE to be in egg plants, at the border, at produce farms, factories, car washes, wal-marts, construction sites, etc etc etc Think about it, there aren't enough agents or money to do half what you silly people are demanding. Maybe we can take people from other duties like anti-terrorism, citizen assists in disaster areas, other unimportant stuff. Give it a rest, unless you have a plan on paying for this mass roundup and to replace all the seasonal workers, etc. sheesh

I'm sick of hearing about this, already. Rinse and cook your frigging eggs. Let's go back to talking about bed bugs.

Which would you rather have? 8 week old eggs sold to as fresh or bed bugs? Tough choice.

A tiny number of gigantic corporations supply the majority of our food supply sold across the country under a number of brands. For them, profit is the bottom line, not food safety or animal comfort. Millions of chickens are crammed into tiny cages that never see the light of day resulting in overcrowding which leads to unsanitary conditions. Do yourself a favor and watch the movie "Food, Inc." and have your eyes opened! Buy organic, free range and where possible, buy locally. And support laws that protect farm animals. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out that happy, healthy animals produce safe and healthy food.

More important than organic and free range (which doesn't mean much) is to buy "pastured" eggs if available in your area. Pastured eggs come from chickens that freely roam around on fresh pasture and eat grass, grubs, worms, etc. Such eggs contain considerably more nutrients and far less toxins than typical industrial eggs.

nate: any ideas where to buy Pastured eggs. Can find organic, free range, but haven't seen Pastured. This will sound mean, but it isn't meant that way...please give more info when providing suggestions.
