Bedbugs Bite Their Way Across the Country

By
Cynthia Bowers
(CBS)  Decades after bedbugs were eradicated they're making a big comeback. Terminix - a nationwide exterminator - said Wednesday that New York and Philadelphia have the biggest infestations and four cities in Ohio are in the top 15.

There is something that can stop bedbugs but we can't use it. Fighting the tiny bedbugs has become big business for Columbus, Ohio, exterminator Lonnie Alonso, who has no idea why his state is under siege.

"Eighty to 90 percent of the phone calls we get every single day are related to bedbugs," says Alonso.

Nationally since 2006 the money spent eradicating bedbugs has more than doubled, topping $250 million dollars, reports CBS News correspondent Cynthia Bowers. New York City leads the misery index, where even couples like the Krause's living in upscale apartments are finding themselves infested.

"I woke up and found that I had a couple of bites on me," says Amber Krause. "That's when I was pretty sure it was leading to bedbugs."

America is suddenly crawling with these critters because they've developed a resistance to most pesticides. Experts say there is an effective weapon - a chemical called Propoxur - that keeps killing for up to five weeks. The EPA says the chemical could be dangerous to children. The government recently said no more could be manufactured for use inside.

"As of a week and a half ago, I ordered the last 170 cases that my supplier was able to find," says Alonso.

No state is tackling this plague as aggressively as Ohio. It's even petitioned the EPA for permission to continue using the pesticide Propoxur indoors as its last best option. Even as they await approval, time and stores of the toxin are running out.

"The other options of newer technologies, newer chemicals that will come down the pike, those things will take a long time. We need short term solutions," says Alonso.

Bedbugs can live up to a year. Each female can give birth to as many as 500. Alonso says unlike roaches or ants, these insects feast on you, which is why they settle on beds, couches, and recliners.

Columbus grandmother Delores Stewart has been fighting the pests for nearly a year. "I don't want to go to bed. I don't want them crawling all over me," she says.

The EPA is standing firm on the ban of Propoxur indoors but offers these suggestions: seal cracks and crevices along baseboards; remove clutter; use a special mattress cover; dry clothing and sheets at high temperatures.

"Don't let them get out of control because once you let them get out control you can't handle them," says Stewart.

Scientists say the perfect parasite never kills its host but as millions of Americans have found out, it can drive them crazy.

Nasty little creatures. I found this website http://www.theelectronicdognose.com/ that shows a device that won a 2011 invention award with popular science. The detection process is pretty cool how it is modeled after a sniffing dog. Dogs are amazing.

John Meshna is correct about Diatomaceious Earth, as it is the safest and most effective natural product for bedbug and pest control in your home. Also, if you use a handheld steamer for cleaning your kitchen and bathrooms it can be used for spot steam application for bedbug control without disturbing DE application along base boards. The use of Diatomaceious Earth, a handheld steam cleaner and white vinegar will leave your home pest and germ free and will eliminate the need for most house-hold cleaning chemicals. The high cost for professional bedbug eradication in these depressed economic times is one reason outbreak is severe, people actually do not have the money. The three items described above cost between 50-70 dollars and will eradicate bedbugs.

I read an article today co-authored by Louis Sorkin a well known entomologist who suspects bed bugs infestation will increase by 51%. Why don't more people aim at prevention when it costs so much more to handle infestation? I use a PackTite heater and BugZip whenever I travel, the stuff is readily available online if you just Google it...

I found this website on another CBS article, Edgehillherbfarm.com. I bought a bottle of their lavender bed bug repellent and it has worked well. Living in nyc I have feared an infestation since the summer but after a month of using the spray I am still bed bug free!

Toxic chemicals will only make the problem worse and their side effects can be worse than the bites. Diatomaceous Earth has been around for nearly a century and is used to kill everything from fleas to bugs in grain silos. It kills by physical action and the insects can't become immune. Since it's a mineral it doesn't dissolve or gas off like liquid sprays and the chemicals most exterminators use that only kill once and need to be applied again and again. Once you apply diatomaceous earth you have permanent protection from all bugs in your home, not just bed bugs. You can buy it at http://www.dirtworks.net.

I lived in Ohio last summer and had bedbugs. It was clear that the apt complex would be prone to them since there were temporary residents there...coming in and out. I wish bedbugs was the worst that could happen but I read this article http://******/dcNS9H that describes WORSE insects and situations we can find ourselves in...read this....I highly recommend it.

Diatomaceous is so fine of a powder that it gets into even the smallest cracks. It's about 10 microns in size. Heat works well to but is not available to most people and it costs a lot to get some one to come in and get that done and many people just don't have the money to call anyone for anything. DE is a sound remedy and we here at Dirt works have hundreds of happy customers and testimonials from them letting us know just how effective DE is for the treatment of bed bugs. Nice thing is, it's safe and costs very little and you can do it yourself.
