Woman Who Dropped Cat in Trash Bin: It Was Fun

By
CBSNews
(CBS)  When his missing cat, Lola, was found in a trash bin, howling in distress, Darryl Mann, of Coventry, England, checked the surveillance video from a security camera outside his house.

On the tape, Mann saw a woman pause to stroke the cat, then inexplicably drop it in the bin.

CBS News correspondent Richard Roth reported on "The Early Show" the cat was trapped in the trash container for 15 hours.

Mann told reporters, "I don't know how anyone could, you know, go to bed and sleep at night knowing they've just locked a cat in a wheelie-bin; I just, you know, I don't know what was going through her head at the time."

Mystified by the random act of cruelty that turned his cat into kitty litter, Mann posted the video on Facebook, where it didn't take long to stir online outrage, even death threats aimed at the middle-aged woman from the middle of England ultimately identified as 45-year old Mary Bale, who works at a local bank.

Bale told the tabloid The Sun, "It was a split second of madness."

She explained to the paper, "I thought it would be funny." And anyway, she added, "It's just a cat."

Now police and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are investigating.

Lola, according to her owner, is tired, but fine.

hi, its amazing how the British sensitivities kick in when they hear stories like the woman who threw a cat in a bin.
but i am amazed how we can choke over swallowing a Nat yet don't flinch over a camel, when every day 1000's of unborn babies suffer the same fate.
its so sad to see the women of our society, who fought for the right to vote now withholding a more fundamental right to life for their unborn child.
when will our sensitivities make room for the rights of the unborn child. I'm sure if they had a vote they would vote to live.
i know my opinion may not be popular, in some circles, but if we can get so worked up about a cat and women's right to vote, how come human life takes such a low priority.
i hope this dose not suffer the same fate as the cat......rob

Have the cat's people tried to get her into a pet carrier since then? That could be much more difficult nowadays. (one of my rescuees had been put into a very small place--and cats don't walk well on a leash either)

How horrible! What an outrage. I have a dog that I give a home to after he lost his owner and home from the May flood here in Nashville. If I even raise my hand to him, he cowers. I just know he was abused. How dare she say "It's just a cat". It is a living and breathing creature. It suffers just like a person would. What a horrible person. Can you imagine if it were a child?

People starving all over the world have NOTHING to do with this woman's idiocy.By putting the cat in the trash bin..did people all over the world have MORE food? They aren't inter related. And YES..I DO think she should be punished for this..it was cruel and pointless..she admitted she did it for "fun".In case you don't READ..that is how most of our famous killers get their start..killing small defenseless animals. Not that I think she's headed that way..but its been discussed that if people would be prosecuted early in their killing of animals..we'd like to believe SOMEONE might be able to head off the later killing sprees that advance to humans.Animals matter.People starving in ANY country matter..but they are still separate issues.

REMINDER: Outdoor cats are not safe and people who leave them outside are nasty, and shouldn't own cats:

From 'A Safe Cat is a Happy Cat':
http://www.humanesociety.org/assets/pdfs/pets/safe_cat_happy_cat.pdf

...The Myth of The Outdoor Cat

The Good News is that Cats DON'T need to wander to lead fulfilling lives. The bad news is that many cat caregivers believe the opposite. Free-roaming cats get a dangerous tradeoff:

freedom to roam in exchange for the vastly increased likelihood of a premature, painful death.

The Humane Society of the United States estimates that the average lifespan of a free-roaming cat is about three years, compared to 12?18 years for the average indoor-only cat. Even cats in ?safe? suburban neighborhoods can meet untimely fates and never return home.

Safely confined cats avoid these hazards:

CRUEL PEOPLE. Many shelter workers see cats who have been burned, poisoned, or otherwise tortured by disturbed children and adults.

TRAFFIC.Collisions with cars and other vehicles are common killers. It is a myth that cats are ?streetwise? about cars. Cats are intelligent and alert but, like most other animals, stand little chance against fast-moving vehicles.

DISEASES. Rabies and other diseases that can be transmitted to humans are a serious public health concern. According to the American Association of Feline Practitioners, as many as 15 percent of sick cats are infected with feline leukemia or feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)?and many cats have both. These viruses are fatal and transmitted through contact with other cats.

POISONS. Poisons exist on chemically treated lawns, in bait left out to kill rats or mice, and in auto antifreeze?which has an appealing taste? that leaks from cars.

OTHER ANIMALS. Other cats, dogs, and wild predators such as coyotes, raccoons, and foxes are potential enemies of cats and often engage in fights that leave cats injured or dead. Outdoor cats can suffer torn ears, cut eyes, abscesses, and other injuries requiring costly veterinary treatment.

If you look at the close-ups of Lola in the film, you will see her slowly opening & closing her eyes...this is how a cat blows you kisses!!! Lola is expressing her love and gratitude to you!! A long, slow blink from a cat is the same as a kiss from a human (I read it in a book); cats don't have facial muscles to make kisses like we do...Cats have love and this woman thinks it's funny to hurt a gentle creature like this...Lola will be in heaven before you, Mary!!
I say put her to work in an animal shelter, make her crawl on her knees and clean up litter boxes & animal feces...after she's rotted in a jail cell for a while!!
I wonder what happened in her childhood to make this woman have such a twisted excuse for a sense of humor, and what made her grow up so jaded and cruel...
Did she hang her kids in closets, too??

Don't elevate her status by calling her a woman. She is a cow (no offence to the sacred cows of India or any other cows for that matter).

I am a woman and I would never hurt a poor defenceless animal. Animals look to people for love and protection. She provided neither.

You have a very low opinion of women. Are you muslim?
