4 U.S. Troops Killed in Afghanistan

(CBS/AP)  Four U.S. troops were killed in fighting in eastern and southern Afghanistan on Sunday, and a former guerrilla leader who battled Soviet invaders decades ago was killed by a roadside bomb in the country's north.

Three of the U.S. casualties died in insurgent attacks and one was killed by a homemade bomb, NATO said.

The deaths bring the number of international forces killed in Afghanistan this month to 42, including 28 Americans, according to a count by The Associated Press. Sixty-six American troops were killed in July, making it the deadliest month for U.S. forces in Afghanistan since the 2001 invasion.

Afghanistan: The Road Ahead

In the country's north, insurgents using a bomb detonated by remote control destroyed the vehicle in which former guerrilla commander Salaam Pahlawan was traveling as he made his way Saturday to government offices in Faryab province's Al Mar district, said provincial police commander Khalil Andarbi.

The attack also killed two of Pahlawan's sons, ages 5 and 10, and two bodyguards, Andarbi said.

He said Pahlawan had been commander of anti-Soviet forces in the district but had lately been serving in an advisory role as a tribal elder. Many surviving veterans of the 1979-1989 Soviet invasion have been targeted by the Taliban for allying themselves with the government in Kabul.

In western Afghanistan's Herat province, insurgents Saturday ambushed a convoy carrying a provincial council member running for a seat in next month's elections for the national parliament, killing the man's brother, said Raouf Ahmedi, police spokesman for western Afghanistan.

Abdul Hadi Jamshadi's bodyguards returned fire, but Ahmedi said it wasn't known whether any militants were killed.

The attack appeared to be part of a campaign of terror and intimidation being waged by the Taliban in hopes of sabotaging the Sept. 18 elections.

President Obama has beefed up troop strength here to 93,000 to try to defeat the Taliban, but many foreign policy experts believe the only way to end the war is by negotiating with the very insurgency Afghan and coalition forces are trying to crush. It's called reconciliation.

Reporting from Afghanistan, "CBS Evening News" Anchor Katie Couric asked the top commander, U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus, if the United States would be willing to play a role in that process.

"We're not the ones calling the shots," said Petraeus. "At the end of the day those who will determine whether reconciliation goes forward or not are those who lead the Afghan government, and that is why it is appropriate that they lead these efforts, perhaps facilitated in some cases, supported in some cases, by the United States. But those are going to remain behind the scenes, and that's where they should remain. President (Hamid) Karzai has established the Afghan government's redlines if you will. They must respect the constitution, lay down weapons, cut off ties with al Qaeda and essentially be willing to be productive members of society."

Petraeus: Afghans Call Shots in Taliban Talks

Fighting around the country on Saturday and Sunday killed five Afghan soldiers and at least 17 militants, according to the defense and interior ministries. Five of the insurgents were killed when roadside bombs they were trying to plant exploded, while a joint NATO-Afghan operation in the southern province of Zabul resulted in the death of a senior Taliban commander, Sandar Yar, according to a provincial government statement.

Insurgents in Kandahar province, one of Afghanistan's most violent, killed the head of a private security company on Saturday, while one civilian was killed and five wounded by a land mine in Herat's Anjil district.

President Hamid Karzai has ordered such companies to cease operating in Afghanistan within four months, posing a challenge to the U.S. and its allies who rely heavily on contractors to guard supply convoys, installations and development projects.

Complaints have mounted that the firms are poorly regulated, reckless and effectively operate outside local law, and the order to disband them is part of the president's moves to assert his authority.

German Brigadier Gen. Josef Blotz, spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force overseeing foreign troops in Afghanistan, said ISAF supported Karzai's order and would work with his government on plans to carry it out.

However, Blotz said an interim solution may have to be found that addresses the need for some contractors to continue to operate.

Separate solutions needed to be found to provide protection for diplomats, development projects, and convoys, as well as ensure security around forward operating bases manned by foreign and Afghan troops, Blotz said.

"It is a very complex thing," he said.

Karzai has also ordered the removal of some of the capital's ubiquitous security barriers to free up snarled traffic.

Work crews outside a police recruiting center in eastern Kabul on Sunday attached steel cables to iron hoops embedded in the concrete blast walls and used cranes to move them away slab by giant slab. Some were loaded aboard trucks and removed, while others were simply shifted back from the street closer to the walls of the actual center.

I read some of these comments.I am a foreigner, who came to america 12 years ago, when bill clinton was the president.this country today doesn't even look like the one 12 years ago.i blame for that greediness in people that led them to vote bush jr into the office and he simply ruined this country.i remember "freedom fries" hysteria, when anyone against the wars was labeled a traitor.i was surprised how many young americans were ready to risk their lives and bodies for their country unconditionally, they were not checking if the risk was worth the cause.in my own country people would fight only if cause was 100% justified.fighting means dying,it means being separated from the families,it means being deprived of all sorts of things.it means to stay one day before god(believers) and telling him, yes,i did the right thing.killing tens, hundreds, thousands of people was the right thing to do,that is what these young men and women have to tell to themselves,to their families,to their friends.america has greatly suffered from these wars.others even more.the way i see this country, several things are no brainers to do:
-end the wars today, pull the troops back asap
-deploy the army to the southern border and stop illegal immigration(danger from muslim terrorists will go down as soon as america leaves middle east alone)
-get rid of israel, that is not an ally, that is a bloodsucker
-bring manufacturing back to america and employ all the people
i hope many will see this as a well-intended advice, not a finger in the eye

I am very sorry to read these comments.
America understand YOU the People created this FAILED DEBACLE.

What would of happened in Afghanistan if America did nothing in 1980's?

Well America did enough for one group of Afghans, and not enough
for the other Afghans that needed America even more once the Soviets left.

Now I read "cut and run","abandon" like cowards leave the MISSION,which is " freeing the Afghans from those Crazy Religious Fanatics".

America You are deep in this WAR with only one direction, and that is
FORWARD.
Being a COWARD is not a OPTION. MAN UP AMERICA.

To add to my previous comment...I don't know how Congress can take a vacation and President Obama and Queen Michelle go on vacation while our people are being killed. It's another Nero fiddled while Rome burned happening. Every politican should be involved in stopping this war. We are in countries that are corrupt and greedy just like many of our politicans. When November election comes, we have to boot these greedy, corrupt politicans out of office or impeach them,,which ever comes first. These people put their hand on the Bible to swear to uphold the Constituation of the United States and to protect it's people...many of them lied including Obama.

I love our country. I hate this so called war. It's an invasion started by George Bush, who spent his so called military career in Alabama campaigning for a Alabama politican and flying at outdated military plane. Obama campaigned that he would bring the troops home. One of the previous comments was they are coming home in a bodybag. Obama won the Senate seat in Illinois by running against Allen Keyes, the guy who is always running for President. Keyes isn't from Illinois. Illinois is a corrupt state. I am a grandmother and I could have run for State Senator and had more experience. This run for Illinois Senator was in his plan to run for President and Oprah Winfrey was in on the scam for Obame to announce this on her show. After Bush, our local dog catcher could have been elected President (maybe even me). So, while Obama and Queen Michelle and the Princess play, our soldiers are being sent into harms way every minute, every hour, every day while their family at home deal with this by saying they are protecting America. No, they are making more enemy's for we American's. People volunteer to join the military, we have not draft. Our country is broke, thanks to this unjust war. How many women and children have been killed in these countries? We are protest the Mosque in N.Y, why aren't milions of Americans protesting the war? Because it hasn't affected many people, they think...but if you are without a job, a home, health insurance, blame this unjust war. Bring our troops home and pay them to protect our borders as we have made enemy's around the world and there is someone, or some people somewhere who are going to attack again. They are very happy that our country is going into a Depression. Buy American. Be American and protest to bring OUR TROOPS HOME TO AMERICA.

Shut your dxxn mouths these troops deserve more respect than you couch potato heads have to offer. BLAMING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. I am sick and tired of your off color political remarks. The trouble is we are in it, and I just wonder if we got behind these troops, and the enemy saw strength instead of weakness in our jibber jabber it would do more good, than the PULL OUT NOW strategy. God Bless these troops, their families and every last one that has died in the defense of this unappreciative country. The cowards of War this is the third war we start screaming pull out, We should never ever go to war again because when it gets tough we want to run. What happened to us No one likes war we should never say protect our country again because we do not have the fortitude to sustain such a thing.Every time you say we should get out the enemy is saying just stick it out we are winning. My grandson is over there, and you and your stupid mouths are putting him in danger. So try another strategy would you keep quiet and the media should just stay home and shut up the less said the better and let the military do its job they are the best in the world, Your the only ones that doesn't realize it.

Yes. No citizen should be able to express an opinion that doesn't support the empire.
.
So your grandson is in Afghanistan, huh? That makes you and me about the same age. I'm assuming that as much as you love war... you did what I did back in 1966... I swallowed the official lies about VietNam being a threat to us... and I enlisted. Did you notice that Dick Cheney, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, Barack Obama and the rtest of the war cabinets were all strangely absent from that war? I wonder why.

"My grandson is over there, and you and your stupid mouths are putting him in danger."

Not true. Our tax dollars funding pakistan who buys weapons for the taliban are doing that.
So, our "foreign aid" is being used against us. Get a clue.
