Obama Challenges GOP on Campaign Finance

By
CBSNews
(AP)  President Barack Obama says Republicans should join him in opposing a Supreme Court ruling that vastly increased how much corporations and unions can spend on campaign ads.

Instead, the GOP wants to "keep the public in the dark" about who's behind the expenditures, Mr. Obama charged in his weekly radio and Internet address, released Saturday as he vacationed on Martha's Vineyard.

"You'd think that reducing corporate and even foreign influence over our elections wouldn't be a partisan issue," said Mr. Obama. "But the Republican leaders in Congress said no. In fact, they used their power to block the issue from even coming up for a vote.

"This can only mean that the leaders of the other party want to keep the public in the dark," said the president. "They don't want you to know which interests are paying for the ads. The only people who don't want to disclose the truth are people with something to hide."

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., scoffed at the president's message.

"Americans want us to focus on jobs, but by focusing on an election bill, Democrats are sending a clear message to the American people that their jobs aren't as important as the jobs of embattled Democrat politicians," McConnell said. "The president says this bill is about transparency. It's transparent all right. It's a transparent effort to rig the fall elections."

At issue is the ruling earlier this year in the case known as Citizens United that freed big businesses and unions to spend their millions directly to sway elections for president and Congress.

The ruling, seen as mostly benefiting Republicans, reversed a centurylong trend of limiting the political muscle of corporations, organized labor and their massive war chests.

In response, majority Democrats in the House passed legislation in June limiting the ruling's reach, including requiring greater disclosure by donors. But Republicans in the Senate have blocked the legislation. That doesn't appear likely to change, notwithstanding the president's pleas.

Republicans devoted their weekly address to accusing Democrats of out-of-control spending and taxing, arguing in favor of slashing government expenditures instead.

"If we keep spending too much, borrowing too much and taxing too much - if we keep doing the same things, we're going to get the same dismal results," said Rep. Charles Djou, R-Hawaii. "It's time to change direction. It's time to listen."

About ninety years ago Cal Coolidge said "the business of America is business".

Talk about an example ...
He and Harding gave us a great depression. Talk about a wise guy. Hoover
could not get us out of it. It took a democrat, FDR, to clean the mess.
And indeed, here we go again.

Ever notice how Obama whines a lot? Seems OK for a Union to contribute and then gets pay backs. Ever notice how he avoids the part of the bill the Supreme court rejected that said you could not tell the dirty little secrets of a politican 60 days before an election? That is an infringement on freedom of speech, but that is what the politicans wanted to get passed.

This anti business and anti profit administration, is why the unemployment rate is so high and business's are going offshore. When you limit the profits a business is allowed to make, they'll shut down and move elsewhere.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Retm-w, how many jobs went to china and India between the years 2000 and 2004? As I recall millions of manufacturing and tech jobs fled the country and the supposed business utopia created by Bush and his Republican Congress. Most people of reasonable intelligence would conclude that we have one party ran and financed by the oligarch, a partisan hack such as yourself will find another "reason".

The idea that money is Free Speech is nonsense.

Why do the Corporations need to have secret "Free Speech"?

It's just a push back against democracy, it's unAmerican.

You need to read the whole bill that was struck down. There was a portion that said you could not tell of a politicans dirty secrets 60 days before the election. That was obstruction to free speech,The corporate finance limits was an add on and the whole bill was struck down.

Why would the republicans join Obama when he made fun of them with how much money he could raise in his campaign by not using federal funds which are limited. Oh, and before he ran Obama said he would stay with the limited federal money.

Right on....

AND WE WILL CONTINUE -- EVEN IF A MINOR SETBACK OCCURS... IT WON'T LAST!

The Republicans will be eaten alive by their internal cancer. Radical Conservatives have already been hooking their code into the dna of the Republican party -- some REAL fiscal conservatives (the ones with a conscience and a real love of the Constitution for ALL Americans) will provide the anti-bodies.

Wait and see!

The republicans are always crying about reducing the budget. When offered the opportunity to reduce the expenditure for the military they support the military/industrial complex. Since the military absorbs 40 to 50 % of the budget, the republicans will support a reduction if they are serious. Of course, President Eisenhower was right when he warned the country to watch the military/industrial complex as they were capable of bankrupting our economy.

VSmith ... take out social security and medicare which are pretty much self funding and you will see how much the military industrial complex sucks out of your pocket.

You're the one who forgets easily, maistir. Obama accepted no corporate or PAC contributions for his presidential campaign. He raised record amounts (and will surely surpass that in 2014) from INDIVIDUALS alone.

Stop lieing.

He also promised to only use public funding and then promptly tossed that out and proceeded to raise record private funding... another broken promise...
