Fla. Church Denied Permit to Burn Qurans

Gainesville city officials have denied a burn permit for a church that plans to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11.

Interim Fire Chief Gene Prince said Wednesday that an open burning of books is not allowed under the city's burning ordinance.

The Dove World Outreach Center drew international attention after announcing its plan to burn copies of the Islamic holy text on church grounds to mark the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Prince says the church will be fined if it holds the burning.

In an e-mail sent out Wednesday, the church said, "City of Gainesville denies burn permit - BUT WE WILL STILL BURN KORANS."

The Gainesville church made headlines last year after distributing T-shirts that said "Islam is of the Devil."

Yawn.Yawn. Let the church burn whatever books they want. What is the problem? Funny how the people who detest people who tell them what to do or not to do are so involved in this non issue. I am sure it will not be a fire hazard issue, and that this ruse is just more nonsense by moron democrats doing what moron democrats do. Maybe this "stupid" stunt is something we should back as believers in the Koran are sworn enemies of those of any other faith. Then again, maybe stoning is something that could be a help to our crowded jail situation. Thanks Koran.

Both wrong... Mathew 22: 37 Jesus replied: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'38This is the first and greatest commandment.

But let me guess. You were all for the Kansas church protesting the funerals of Marines and soldiers. "Freedom of Speech!" everybody says. "Freedom of Speech!" If the freedom of speech covers one thing, it covers all.

good point - funny how that whole 'freedom of speech' thing only applies til a group takes offense isn't it.

Funny how the same people who say that burning the American flag is protected by the 1st Amendement also condemn burning the Koran. Get off the fence, you idiots. It's one way or the other.

I don't "condemn' it. I just say it's totally stupid and you are indeed allowed to do stupid things under the 1st amendment, unless if by doing so, you break the law.

I don't agree with any of it. All I'm saying is people whine and complain about their "Freedom of Speech" rights being violated, but then try to stop someone else from doing something they don't like, such as burning the Koran. What I think is that sometimes "Freedom of Speech" does not apply, ie funerals and burning the American flag. Sometimes it does, ie burning Bibles, Korans, Playboys mags, and Nickelback Cd's. Funerals because it's a families time of mourning and hurting. And burning the flag because if you don't like it here, leave.
