Fantasia's Overdose Result of Sex Scandal?

(CBS)  Fantasia Barrino is back home in Charlotte, N.C., after treatment for an overdose of aspirin and sleeping pills.

Her manager says it was an accident. And VH1 says her reality show will resume next month as scheduled.

But why did the overdose happen at all?

"Early Show" National Correspondent Hattie Kauffman reported on Thursday the singer was hospitalized after reports of a sex scandal.

Barrino's current situation is a startling contrast from 2004,when she beat the odds and won "American Idol."

Barrino said following her win on the popular talent show, "I left my child for three months, I came out here, and I made it."

Her soaring, gutsy voice even wowed diva great Patti LaBelle. The singer's destiny seemed assured.

Hunter Walker, TV editor of TheWrap.com, told CBS News, "So many contestants from 'American Idol,' and reality show pop stars in general, are seen as more gimmicky than actually talented, and I think her turn on Broadway really showed Fantasia was something different."

But financial struggles followed, and now disturbing news of an apparent suicide attempt. Monday night, a 911 call came from her North Carolina home. A voice on the call says, "An individual took a bottle of aspirin and she's slowly losing consciousness..."

Tabloid photos show Fantasia frolicking at the beach with a married man. A week ago, the man's wife filed for divorce, alleging Fantasia made a sex tape with her husband.

In a statement, Fantasia's spokesperson said she was "overwhelmed by the lawsuit and the media attention."

Fantasia Barrino has always been open about her hard-luck life. Raped at age 14, and a mom in her teens, she wrote the song "Baby Mama" for other young moms.

This troubling turn of events, Kauffman said, leaves Fantasia trying to regain the promise she has always shown her fans.

as much as we want to blame fantasia for what happened, the husband is the one to blame. He is the one that has an responsibility to his wife, not fantasia. Yes...It was wrong for her to date a married (if she even knew he was married) but it takes 2 to tangle. Yall need to be more mad at him for breaking his vowels to his wife and for cheating not fantasia! And as for this law suit! really?! she is only suing because she is FANTASIA! I agree with you 100%, 1st you must love yourself an nothing is worth taking you life over unless you don't see value in yourself. I understand that Fantasia has been through a lot, my thought is that she should begin to practice loving herself until she can truly love herself. Think of her self worth, look at where she has come from, look at the beautiful daughter. Begin to believe that she deserves a many who can be honest with her, has much more to offer her that she has to offer him (finances, honesty, love, caring, consideration). Realize if a man is separated and or pending a divorce from his spouse, he is still a married man...respect yourself enough to say no you're married and don't get involved. A married man who is no good...knows all the things to say to a woman with low self-esteem.

I Fantasia will be ok, she has a strong and determine mine it appears, just from watching. She will get pass this and be able to help others that has been through a lot. I think that she was looking for love in the wrong place. At 14 what happen to her is horrible and she made it. I look forward to hearing about her with a positive note. clicked on story because had never heard of fantasia. since name was sort of odd, decided to check it out. never seen idol either. she seems to be doing what men/women do all over the world, cheat and commit adultery, make sex videos of themselves. all with the general public's approval as well as religions, parents, families. nothing new here.

I honestly think this was a setup. I highly doubt Fantasia knowingly went out with a married man, especially freely in public. He told her repeatedly that he was legally separated for a year and they were divorcing. It's rumored that he works at Verizon and his wife is a CEO (which I think is a lie). It seems that they targeted Fantasia and set the whole thing up. The wife is suing for a so-called sex tape that even Fantasia didn't know about. How would his WIFE get her hands on a sex tape unless he-himself gave it to her. They are going to stay married and were never separated. They are going broke and set up for him to get caught in the tabloid with a celebrity so they could sue and collect as a couple. Fantasia has been through so much with her own family using her and sucking up her money, her vocal injury during her Broadway and recovery. She's finally getting back on time and now this pops out of nowhere. She's humiliated, hurt and embarrassed that this man and his wife set her up like this.
