U.S. Says 75% of Oil Gone, but Skeptics Remain

Updated at 2:33 p.m. Eastern

Three-quarters of the oil from BP's massive spill has been cleaned up or broken down by natural forces, government scientists reported, though the upbeat claims were met with some skepticism.

White House energy adviser Carol Browner said that a new assessment found that about 75 percent of the oil had either been captured, burned off, evaporated or broken down in the Gulf of Mexico.

That leaves about 53.5 million gallons in the gulf. The amount remaining - or washed up on the shore - still is more than four times the size of the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill.

Special Section: Disaster in the Gulf

Federal officials say about a quarter of the oil evaporated or dissolved in the warm gulf waters, the same way sugar dissolves in water. Another one-sixth naturally dispersed, because of the way it leaked from the well. Another one-sixth was burned, skimmed or dispersed using controversial chemicals.

"I think we are getting some good news out of the Gulf in terms of the information from the static kill and also what our scientists are telling us - the vast majority of the oil has been contained, it's been burned, it's been cleaned and that's good news for the people of the Gulf," Browner said on CBS' "The Early Show".

Browner said the remaining oil is expected to "break down naturally."

"Mother Nature will do her part, but we'll continue to be vigilant to ensure anything that comes on shore, the tar balls, the sheen, is cleaned up rapidly," she said.

The report's calculations were based on daily operational reports, estimates by scientists and various analyses by experts. The government acknowledged it made certain assumptions about how oil dissolves in water naturally over time.

Officials, while encouraged by the report, stressed that the fight wasn't over.

"Less oil on the surface does not mean that there isn't oil still in the water column or that our beaches and marshes aren't still at risk," NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco cautioned in a news release.

A Florida State University oceanographer who has long been tracking the spill, and who early on challenged the government's low estimates of its size, called the report "spin."

"There's some science here, but mostly it's spin, and it breaks my heart to see them do it," said the oceanographer, Ian McDonald.

"This is an unfortunate report," he said. "I'm afraid this continues a track record of doubtful information distributed through NOAA."

Allen: "High Confidence" of No New Oil Leakage
Lawmakers Probe Dispersant Used in Gulf Cleanup

Charter boat captain Randy Boggs, of Orange Beach, Ala., said Wednesday he has a hard time believing BP's claims of success with the static kill and similarly dismissed the idea that only a quarter of the oil remains in the Gulf.

"There are still boats out there every day working, finding turtles with oil on them and seeing grass lines with oil in it," said Boggs, 45. "Certainly all the oil isn't accounted for. There are millions of pounds of tar balls and oil on the bottom."

The administration defended the credibility of the newest estimates. Given earlier troubles with government estimates, NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco was asked Wednesday about the credibility of the numbers.

She said the government used direct measurements and the best estimates available for the new report and has a high degree of confidence in them. She said the numbers can be updated as new information comes in.

One of those updates came Wednesday, as the government revised the total amount of oil spewed into the Gulf to 207 million gallons, up slightly from 205 million earlier in the week.

According to the report, a little more than 172 million gallons of that made it into the Gulf. Nearly 35 million gallons were held back by a temporary containment cap.

Meanwhile, officials welcomed news from BP that it had plugged the broken well with heavy mud. The oil giant called it a milestone in ending the spill that started with an April 20 drill rig explosion off Louisiana that killed 11 workers.

National Incident Commander Adm. Thad Allen said the static kill effort to plug the leak is progressing, giving officials "high confidence" that there will soon be no oil leaking into the environment.

But the containment effort isn't over. Crews performing the so-called "static kill" effort overnight now must decide whether to follow up by pumping cement down the broken wellhead. Federal officials said they won't declare complete victory until they get into the well from the other end, and that won't happen for weeks.

"This job will not be complete until we finish the relief well and pump mud and cement in through the bottom," Allen said.

In the fishing town of Yscloskey, La., crabber Oliver Rudesill, 28, said he has been out of business like most of his buddies, some of whom are doing cleanup for BP instead but are earning about a quarter of what they do fishing.

"As soon as BP gets this oil out of sight, they'll get it out of mind, and we'll be left to deal with it alone," he said Tuesday.

At the entrance to Gulf Islands National Seashore at Pensacola Beach, Fla., Don Allen still wasn't expecting to sell many snow cones or Italian sausages from his food truck.

"I don't know where it went if it's not out there," said Allen, who had to lay off his son because business has been so slow as tourists abandoned beaches over the summer. "It's all just numbers, and it has changed so often."

BP applied nearly 2 million gallons of a chemical dispersant to the oil as it spewed from the well, an attempt to break it into droplets so huge slicks wouldn't tarnish shorelines and coat marine animals, and to encourage it to degrade more quickly.

In Washington on Wednesday, lawmakers pressed scientists to explain what effects the chemical, whose long-term effects have been questioned, will have on the Gulf's ecosystem.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., called use of the chemicals a "grand experiment" that didn't guarantee limited damage from the spill or make clear whether greater harm was possible.

The 75-ton cap placed on the well in July had been keeping the oil bottled up inside over the past three weeks but was considered only a temporary measure. BP and the Coast Guard wanted to plug up the hole with a column of heavy drilling mud and cement to seal it off more securely.

The static kill - also known as bullheading - involved slowly pumping the mud from a ship down lines running to the top of the ruptured well a mile below. A previous, similar effort failed in May when the mud couldn't overcome the unstemmed flow of oil.

Workers stopped pumping mud in after about eight hours of static kill work and were monitoring the well to ensure it remained stable, BP said.

If you accept the argument that we have no problem with oil in the gulf because the warm waters dissolved the oil the way sugar is dissolved in water, then you need to talk to diabetics about the safety of such water. What was burned off can return as acid rain, what was dispersed with chemicals can drift for months in dead zones for all living life forms, and if you believe in the evaporation theory, check out any supermarket parking lot to see how well that works. BP and the government can use as many Ph.Ds as they wish to con us, if it flouts common sense, what we get is just Piled Higher and Deeper.

So did Obama and the liberals in the media over-exaggerate the spill by screaming bloody murder and calling it the worst disaster to happen in the history of America and saying it would take decades to clean up?

Oh Yeah! This is what the current administration is already famous for!!!
Remember, we're dealing with the worst corrupt Democratic Administration (Barr none) in the history of this country!!

The good news is that people in droves, are seeing the light of this massive control-freak administration for what they really are up to!

Yes... I AGREE... THIS WAS BAD... You can't any longer ignore what the man behind the curtain and his chosen cronies really want to accomplish... the end of the US and our oil producing industry, as has been and was predicted over the last 200 years.

I am, as my user ID says, a Libertarian... that means I trust None of them in power at this point! The Washington Money and Power grab is completely out of control! I warned everyone this would happen if BHO was elected... Hope the fools that voted him and his cronies into office have at least learned to finally open their eyes... but I doubt that though!!

As far as British Petroleum is concerned... they are in business to make a profit providing US with fuel to continue operating our country! Yes... there were Rig Managers who made bad decisions to save money... we're past that now!

The Liberal media seems to be a bunch of Obama Worshipers with not one shred of honesty or truth to their reports... including CBS!! I'm just glad the Obama Point Man acquiesced and let BP do their job! The Static Kill is in place and is doing it's job! Go BP!

Heck if this correct and this big of an oil spill clean its self up (Since Obama was to busy on his golf outings to worry about it) then I say drill baby drill. Where is the liberal?s argument about the dangers to the environment or even the wreaths? I mean serious we had a well gushing up to a million gallons a day for 100 days.
Now just a week after it was capped the Obama administration says 75% of the oil is gone, give my oil to heck with cap and trade and to heck with electric cars. My Truck and SUV both with Hemi's are ready to burn up some more gas.
This has to be the best news there could be, I guess we need to tell every down south that oily taste in their sea food is just a figment of their imagination though. Because we all know the lefts savior Obama would never tell a lie just to save his political hide right?

While I appreciate your attempt to call massive B to the S. Where it is justly done. I am mystified as to the partisan bend. Bush was just as guilty of lies. As are countless other republicans and democrats. There is no government of the people. They are all owned and do the lying and bidding of their corporate masters. Regardless of the harm to the majority or the planet. Our world will continue to spin out of control and be destroyed by greed and lies. As long as people refuse to see the obvious. The entire system is corrupt and just because some politicians spouts something that sounds compatible with a personal belief? Does not make them your buddy or mean they give a flying rat's rear about you or yours. We mean nothing to any of them, that are of any import. They are bought and paid for and their leashes are held on Wall St and corporate boardrooms around the world.

Partisan bend because we have heard how bad Bush was for the last 4 years and Obama was supposed to be the some sort of "CHANGE" and "HOPE" well how is that working out for you America.

I am sorry I not discussing Bush I know that would be great for Obama if we would all just remember Bush, but news flash it's 2010 and hits Oil spill is Obama's mess he handled poorly and he deserves to be held accountable.

And don't give me the crap this oil spill mess is not Obama's fault because he didn't cause the spill. Bush did cause Hurricane Katrina but he sure a lot grieve for his poor handling of the after math of it, just as Obama should be held accountable for his poor handling of the after math of the spill.

I will forever remember some words from my favorite father-in-law (may he continue to rest-in-peace), who was a senior geo-physicist with Amoco for almost 30-years (pressured into retirement, they were begging him to return within 3 years because he held expertise and knowledge that was proven to be irreplaceable); who one time uddered these words:

"There is so much oil down there it scares me."

I have never forgotten those words. And I believe he knew what he was talking about. He possessed a high-level of human intelligence. He knew the truth. Anybody/any entity that is saying that we are running out of oil is lying (whether they realize it or not).

Liars! You can't believe a word these oil bandits tell you. I watched a show on LinkTV the other day. These oil spills happen all over the place. Texaco had a huge spill in the Amazon were the local people were poisoned by all the toxic chemicals. Many of them get cancer. This goes on all over the world with little regard to human or animal life.
Now my question is "what have you done to reduce your consumption of oil?" Still driving that SUV, Pick UP or living in that huge house that's way too big for your family? We are all at fault. The US have the highest oil consumption of any civilized nation. We are robbing the rest of the world and most of us are not willing to do the slightest thing to conserve.
