Chelsea Clinton's Wedding Day Details

By
CBSNews
(CBS)  With the big day just around the corner for Chelsea Clinton and 32-year-old investment banker Marc Mezvinsky, the speculation game has begun.

CBS News correspondent Elaine Quijano reported Chelsea Clinton was spotted outside her Manhattan gym on Thursday wearing a trench coat -- just days before she'll don a designer wedding gown.

Rhinebeck Ready for Its Big Day

It's still unknown whether Chelsea Clinton will wear Oscar de la Renta or Vera Wang. However, it's clear the ultimate power couple is planning the ultimate wedding for their only child.

Additional details have surfaced about what kind of wedding may be ahead. So what can more than $2 million buy? Eva Longoria's florist, presidential party planners and -- porcelain port-a-potties.

Diane Dimond, of "Entertainment Tonight" told Quijano, "There are porcelain port-a-potties. ... And they will be piping music in."

Quijano added from Rhinebeck, N.Y., on Friday that some of the wedding guests are expected to stay at the historic Beekman Arms and Delamater Inn. She said guests could arrive Friday. The rehearsal dinner is reported to take place at the 500-acre Grasmere Estate nearby Friday evening. Quijano said guests will dine in an old stone barn looking over a pastoral setting and they're being asked to wear "country chic."

But some big names won't be attending the big event. President Obama, for instance, has said he didn't make the guest list for a good reason.

He said on ABC's "The View," "You don't want two presidents at a wedding."

So what A-listers did make the guest list?

According to Dimond, Barbra Streisand and Steven Spielberg are both reportedly invited, among many others.

But many more uninvited guests - the media - have shown up in downtown Rhinebeck, giving the small town some welcome attention.

One young resident of Rhinebeck told CBS News, "She could choose any town in the whole world and she decides to choose this little town."

But amid the celebration, there have been some poignant moments of reflection for the father-of-the-groom, Edward Mezvinsky.

Mezvinsky said on "Inside Edition, "They are strong, wonderful, loving, caring, and sensitive human beings."

On "The Early Show" Friday, Daily Beast editor-at-large Lloyd Grove said Bill Clinton is "truly moved by the whole thing."

Daily Beast senior correspondent Rebecca Dana added, "The parents seem to be taking it seriously, attacking it with the same vigor as they attacked their political careers. Hillary is signing all of her letters as mother-of-the-bride. And Bill is losing weight and trying not to cry. They're doing everything they can to make it about Chelsea and Marc, so that's a good sign."

"Early Show" co-anchor Harry Smith pointed out the lives of Bill and Hillary Clinton "have been about them."

But Grove said the family has a really good relationship, saying one time he saw Chelsea Clinton mouth to her father across a room, "I love you." Chelsea also, Grove said, went out and campaigned hard for her mother during her campaign.

Smith remarked the Clintons have clamped down on details leaked about the event.

But Grove said the family could do more if they wanted to do so.

"I think if they really wanted to clamp down, they would are done something like JFK Jr. and Caroline, which was go to a private island."

Dana added, "Or if you look at Jenna Bush's wedding, you know, she did an interview with Vogue, released a few photos and it was a quiet, private ceremony just for the family. This seems almost calculated to drum up, as much attention as they can. She's running around in big hats, hiding from the press, makes us want to know more."

Smith said he doesn't understand why she didn't ask Vera Wang to come to her, instead of showing up at her shop in New York.

Grove replied, "How could she get on the cover of WWD in a floppy hat if that were the case?"

Smith said, "It's a very interesting dance."

Grove said, "Chelsea's not shy, (she's attended) fashion shows with Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow."

"She is a Clinton," Dana joked.

Smith said, "It's in the gene pool."

I am not a supporter of the Clinton's, nor their politics. But when you strip away of what are, what is left? Proud parents of their only daughter, who has put up with their campaigns, scandals, & under scrutiny from the press all her life. Chelsea has attended college, and has become a good citizen of this nation, and marrying an upstanding man who will cherish her. Yes, the wedding will be costly, what wedding isn't? Who are we to begrudge a young lady for a well deserved celebration. For all we know, it may have been saved up from the time she was born, like a college fund. Don't forget, that maybe the groom's family may have chipped in a dollar here & there!

The country is in a financial pickle, and counting pennies, but do not take away the happiness this young lady deserves! We as a nation have survived the Great Depression, and people of that time still had lavish parties. I am a tax payer, and if our taxes pay for Secret Service protection for our leaders, then so be it.....if you don't like it, then campaign for it to go on a national ballot to forbid protection on former U.S. Government politicians, when they have finished their terms.

Gosh, "Conservatives" sure do get ugly when they're out of power! The Clintons are behaving the same way ANY family would when their only daughter marries: They're giving her the best. They just happen to have more money than most people.

Give it a rest, folks. Best wishes, Chelsea and Marc!

You drive an suv to protect your family. Un-huh, that's a good one. That would depend a lot on what kind of suv you were driving.

Chelsea Clinton deserves the best. She did not choose to grow up in the public eye.
She is the only child to a couple that struggled and worked very hard to be in the positions they are in ? she went along with their journey - . This couple is all she had and they did an excellent
job raising her.
It's their earned money and she is their only child, Clintons or no Clintons, I say go for it.
Congratulations Chelsea and congratulations to the village that raised you.

Harry. You were neither sophisticated or amusing today when you used Chelsea's wedding as an excuse to slam Bill and Hillary. They were always extremely protective of Chelsea's childhood. They did a good job of raising a child who, unlike others, didn't roll around on bar room floors. Like any other parents who care about their child, they were about Chelsea more than themselves.

It's their money and they have every right to spend it however they see fit. And it's keeping a lot of people working as well. Sounds like someone is being a tad envious...

Where do you get $3 million to $6 million from? Someone else said $12 million. The only thing I have ever read is $2 million. And that is pure speculation because they have no idea!
