Cap Could Hold Off Oil Until Relief Wells Ready

(CBS)  Beaches had their busiest days in weeks. People are coming back to the marinas in Louisiana to fish. The oil spill crisis that's kept them away so long isn't over yet.

For a third day BP held back the oil. The pressure in the well is still rising slowly and BP now says the cap could remain closed for weeks until the well is sealed for good.

"Nobody wants to see oil flowing into the Gulf again," said BP COO Doug Suttles. "We're hopeful that if encouraging signs continue we may be able to keep the integrity test going until the point where we get the well killed."

Special Section: Disaster in the Gulf

That could be risky, reports CBS News correspondent Kelly Cobiella. With the oil held back, pressure is slowly building in the well bore and on the failed blowout preventer. If there's a weak point, the pressure could make it worse.

Tests have found no signs of leaks so far but the government's man in charge wants BP to keep looking. In a statement Thad Allen said, "We must ensure no irreversible damage is done which could cause uncontrolled leakage from the sea floor." And no one is ruling out the option of re-opening the valves and collecting oil again to avoid stressing the well.

"It would require oil flow into the Gulf of Mexico for up to three days but we just have to monitor this test minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day," said Suttles.

For nearly three months the thousands of workers at the command center have been trying to defend against the onslaught of oil. With BP's cap holding, their strategy is shifting from defense to offense.

BP's incident commander Mike Ustler says they use a map to see changes in the shape and size of the oil. "We are seeing it shrink and that's a wonderful feeling at this stage," he said.

Skimming boats and controlled burns are eating away at the oil on top of the water. Yet in the bays and marshes along the Gulf coast the damage is already done and biologists don't yet know how long it will take to recover.

Scientists say oil from other spills has stayed in the environment and affected marine life for decades but in some cases they say trying to remove every last drop from sensitive areas like marshes has done more harm than good.

Can we just cut the political slams for a moment and breathe with some relief that the nightmare appears over? That the frigging well is finally capped and the people of the gulf can look forward to returning to their lives and livelihoods? That's really all that matters now - there's plenty of time to blame and slam. Just appreciate what's happening, I mean, what's NOT happening in the gulf right now.

Recent reports of oil seaping through the bottum silt in other causes concern over casing leakage. I hope it is over but there is still some doubt!

Amazing how you liberals can never be happy with anything.

Good job Obama!

If Republicans had been in charge, they would have invaded Grenada to try to fix the problem.

They talk like 6000 psi is too low and complain when the pressure rises. Stoopit news has to make everything sound bad.

A few days ago, BP was assuring us that the oil would be 100% contained. Now the new cap will last until the relief well is finished. The problem is simple. Neither BP, nor any one else in the oil company is really sure how to stop the leak. Neither is Bobby Jindal, the governor of Louisiana, neither is the Tea Party Movement.
It is NOT Obama's responsibility to clean up the mess that BP created by their own negligence. It is his responsibility to try to prevent future disasters. That is the reason for the moratorium on deep-water drilling until oil companies and states, like Louisiana, can come up with fool-proof plans to prevent future disasters. This only affects about 34 wells in the entire Gulf of Mexico.
We need to suspend deep-water drilling everywhere in the world until it can be done safely. We only have one ocean. In the meantime, for fuel, I'd suggest we develop ethanol from miscanthus, much more efficient that ethanol from corn. OriginOil and AlgaeVenture Systems are too companies that are developing revolutionary techniques to get fuel from algae. But don't believe me. Check onto the sites themselves. You can even ask these companies to provide you with more information.
Bottom line - We do NOT need to destroy the environment to get the energy we need. There are alternatives. That's the reason we need to pass the Clean Energy and Jobs Bill, along with the CLEAR act, which provides a good way of funding the development of clean energy.

P.s. The Republicans oppose green energy because they relay on Big Oil for campaign contributions, so they are just telling lies to fool the public.

Another liberal wanting to control what the rest of the world does. If other countries want to deep water drill that's their choice. And your cap and trade has nothing to do with clean energy or jobs it's about taxing more business out of the country.

The oil leak itself appears to be stopped, however, methane gas appears to be seeping up through the ocean floor. The Methane is the probable cause of the initial explosion, so BP is not totally at fault. Mother Nature seems to have found a way to keep oil companies on their toes. The methane seep is thought to have already been there and does not appear to have been caused by the blown out well or the drilling, itself. Now, Mr. Obama, who you gonna blame for this one?

Bush/Cheney.

Liberal925, the methane which caused the explosion was the result of drilling. And let's set the record straight. Obama does not control BP. According to the Tea Party Movement, the federal government has no business in stopping the oil leak. We should not have called on the Coast Guard or the Navy. And Obama should not have demanded that BP pay for the damage done to the Gulf.
