Holder: Russian Spies Were "Certainly a Threat"

(CBS/AP)  While they passed along no U.S. secrets, the 10 Russian sleeper agents involved in the spy swap posed a potential threat to the U.S. and received "hundreds of thousands of dollars" from Russia, Attorney General Eric Holder said.

"Russia considered these people as very important to their intelligence-gathering activities," he told "Face the Nation" host Bob Schieffer in an interview broadcast Sunday.

He defended the decision to allow the 10 to return to Russia in exchange for the release of four Russian prisoners accused of spying for the West because the swap presented "an opportunity to get back ... four people in whom we have a great deal of interest."

Accused Spies Freed from Russia Land in U.S.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, sidestepping the question of whether Russia's espionage poses a threat to the U.S., said the swap came amid improved relations between the two countries.

"The economic discussions that President (Dmitry) Medvedev and President Obama had just recently and the progress that we've made in reducing nuclear weapons - and hopefully we'll get a treaty through the Senate this summer that will further reduce nuclear weapons - means our security is stronger and safer and our relationship is stronger," Gibbs said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

The Attorney General confirmed to Schieffer the deported Russian spy network did not succeed in obtaining any U.S. state secrets.

"They didn't pass any classified information, and for that reason they were not charged with espionage," Hold said, adding, "the potential for what they might have done was, I think, a serious thing."

When asked by the Face the Nation host whether the group truly posed a security threat to the United States, Holder responded that, "as agents of a foreign power" the alleged spies "were certainly a threat".

The country's top lawyer also sought to erase concern over the fate of the children of the Russian agents, saying they all were allowed to return to Russia "consistent with their parents wishes" or, in the case of those who were adults or nearly adults, were allowed to make their own choices of where to live.

"The children have all been handled, I think, in an appropriate way," he said.

The seven offspring embroiled in the spy saga ranged in age from a 1-year-old to a 38-year-old architect. In most cases they were born and grew up in the United States, making them U.S. citizens.

On pending terrorism cases, Holder acknowledged "there's a real question" as to whether a terrorist suspect such as self-professed Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed can face the death penalty if he were to plead guilty before a military commission.

Holder: Politics Has Delayed KSM Trial

Holder indicated he still favors bringing Mohammed and four alleged accomplices before civilian courts, but that has been met with opposition in Congress and elsewhere. He said no decision has been made on where the trials will be held or whether they would be civilian or military.

He said one roadblock is that Congress has yet to come up with the money for the trials. "The politicization of this issue when we're dealing with ultimate national security issues is something that disturbs me a great deal," Holder said.

Holder also said the closing of the Guantanamo detention camp has become more difficult "because there have been people who have changed their positions" and Congress hasn't agreed to provide the money to relocate the detainees to an underused state prison in Illinois. He said other states have offered to take the prisoners, but did not name any states.

"There is no reason to believe that people held in Guantanamo cannot be held wherever we put them in the United States. Again, very safely and very effectively," Holder said.

Goodbye, Bob.

You no longer make the grade as a responsible journalist.
The mistatement, or lie, regarding the Arizona law is unforgivable.
Time for us to change the channel.
Say hello to Dan Rather.

Bob Scheiffer is either senile or dedicated to misinforming the public.....either way he is now part of the problem.
He INTENTIONALLY MISREPRESENTED the Arizona law, LYING that it allowed law officers to walk up to Hispanics and demand that they "show their papers". That is a LIE. He either (a) is ignorant and lazy; or (b) intentionally misrepresented it, hoping to perpetuate a lie to cover up the President's mistakes.

Schieffer did NOT ask about the Justice Department dropping a voter intimidation case against the Black Panthers. Holder dropped the case against the new Black Panthers voter intimidation cases that involved black defendants and white victims. One of Black Panthers is seen on video on a crowded public streetcalling for "killing white babies".
Schieffer did ask about Holder's infamous comment that the US is a "nation of cowards" about discussing race. Very true, the media will not why the white victims of Black extremist are discriminated against by the Obama's AG.

Good money coming into the country and we just can't accept our good luck... but what a PR event for the new Angelina Jolie movie and probably recruitment for a new generation of spies to staff our 16 spy agencies and homeland security and all the money they can make off of the US taxpayers in secret so we don't have to know much it is costing us! That's an idea run the entire government out of intelligence agencies and then nothing has to be reported.

Let's see....we watched them for several years...suddenly they became an international threat just when the administration needs a boost from some seriously flawed decisions ..... then WHOA!!!! we deported them. What a complete coincidence. Wonder how he's going to make 16-18 million Mexicans disappear? Mexico couldn't handle the influx of that much humanity and we, sure as Hades is hot, can't afford to support them

PRIMAL GOP PARANOIA

Had the administration not deported the Russian agents (all confessed), Faux News propaganda would have launched an "expose" about how the FBI was asleep, etc.

Clearly, the GOP SmearNet cannot have it both ways...

The idiocy of rightwinger, headbanging paranoia generates enough wind each day to float a fleet of Graf Limbaughs over New Jersey.

The more exclamation points used, the more desperate you seem. You forgot to post in all-caps, however.

How much are we paying this person to make such brilliant statements?

Holder: Russian Spies Were "Certainly a Threat"

Is this like saying, "1 plus 1 eqauls 2" or "The sun provides light and heat." or "We will sue AZ for a law which is basically a mirror image of the Fed law."

Uh or duh, when were spies not a threat?

My solution, we need to replace the current administration as soon as the laws permit.

I guess Obama has to make it look like he's doing something besides talking, and helping Calderon and his Lebanese benefactor invade the US. What a joke! Get Real!

Mexico's Calderon is a conservative, approximately the same political stripe as Canada's Harper. So, "liberal" Obama is in a plot for help a conservative "invade the US"? And you advise people to "get real"?

Conservatives are not necessarily the GOP bozos patronized by corporate America. For example, Wm. F. Buckley had sheer contempt for Bush and his GOP machine, not to mention Palin. Many conservatives proudly insist on preservation of our natural assets, and disagree sharply with BP-- even while the GOP apologies to BP.

I think Holder is a threat. Instead of doing his job to secure the border and uphold federal immigration law, he is making war on American citizens in Arizona. Same goes for President Obama. They both are disgusting in these actions.

Comparisons are required-- until 2007 and 2008, the final two years of Bush, the border with Mexico was a closed subject to news coverage. Few Americans realized how loose things had become.

For example, that border under Bush was wide open to illegals, drug gangs, etc. Under Obama, this situation improved somewhat, but only now is called a "security risk" by GOP posters.

Again, where were the media on the border issue during the Bush years? Answer-- Mesmerized by a so-called war on terror that somehow had American troops fighting in Baghdad streets to protect Brownsville, TX.

Now that Holder wants to enforce federal law-- as opposed to rolling over for just any state that happens to challenge it-- certain GOP bozos (hard advocates of "law and order") want the Attorney General of the United States to back off.

Our judges give their marks on AG Holder-- "Disgusting"-- NO, "Effective in Upholding Federal Law"-- YES

Plainly, you were disappointed Holder did not declare the whole thing a game and declare recess. But Holder had only one appropriate answer to give, and gave it.

The idea of prosecuting and deporting unregistered agents, however, pose an interesting tack on AIPAC-- unregistered agents of Israel.
