Holder: Politics has Delayed KSM Trial

By
Stephanie Condon
(CBS)  In an exclusive interview with CBS News chief Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer on CBS' "Face the Nation," Attorney General Eric Holder said that political posturing has delayed some of the administration's top priorities -- bringing self-proclaimed Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed to trial and closing the prison and Guantanamo Bay.

Holder said the administration will make a decision as to where [the KSM] trial will occur "as soon as we can."

"But we are bound and determined to hold Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and those who worked with him… responsible for happened on September 11," he told Schieffer during the interview, which took place at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Aspen, Colo.

Holder wants to try Mohammed in civilian court, but some others say the trial should take place in the military tribunal system. The Obama administration is still in the process of determining what course of action to take, but Holder expressed frustration over the debate.
"One of the things I think that is particularly bothersome to me is that this really has become something that has become political," Holder told Schieffer. "And politicization of this issue, when we're dealing with ultimate national security issues, is something that disturbs me a great deal."

He added that having "Republicans and Democrats arguing about this in a political way, as opposed to dealing with the substance... is something that I think is regrettable and has resulted, I think, in the delays that we have seen."

Holder said he preferred trying the alleged terrorists in civilian court because the United States has an "extremely capable" court system that has proven effective in these kind of cases.

"There have been a really limited number of people who have been tried in the military tribunals, which is not to say that they should not be used," he said. "But... I think if we try to exclude the federal criminal justice system, we are taking away one of the tools that we have. And I think ultimately we make this nation much weaker. That's a very dangerous thing, I think, to take that tool out of our hands."

The administration must work through other issues to determine where the trial will be held, such as Congressional funding issues and concerns held by local officials, Holder said.

"Justice has been denied too long," he said.

Closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay is another priority that has been upheld by politics, Holder told Schieffer. Some politicians are opposed to the administration's plans to move prisoners to an underused state prison in Thomson, Illinois.

"This is another instance where I think politics, unfortunately, has entered into this discussion," he said. "I think there's a lot of misinformation out there. We have proven an ability to hold in our federal prison system people convicted of, charged with terrorist offenses very effectively, very safely. There is no reason to believe that people held in Guantanamo cannot be held wherever we put them in the United States."

The administration requested funding in its 2011 budget to open the Thomson facility, and must persuade Congress to approve the funding. Holder noted that the administration has brought down the number of prisoners still detained at Guantanamo from 240 to about 180.

"Guantanamo… serves as a recruiting tool for al Qaeda," he said. "The intelligence shows that, continues to show that that is true. It has served as a wedge between us and our traditional allies. We have done all that we can to try to close Guantanamo."

Bill O'Reilly and 60 Minutes seem to be the only people who get the straight scoop anymore.

'Cold chill down the spine as I realized that my old and trusted friend Bob Schieffer was indulging his taste for all things leftwing, by giving Holder a tongue bath right there on TV. Mr. Schieffer will henceforth cease to show up on my media radar. Sad, very sad.

I was shocked to hear Bob's misinterpretation of the Arizona immigration law and also disturbed with Eric Holder nodding his agreement. Bob's credibility is evaporating and he should publically apologize to the citizens of Arizona for his misrepresentation of this law. At this point in time, most folks now understand that the Arizona law is not a basis fro racial profiling.

CBS News and Bob have lost ALL credibility!!!! Bob LIED about the Arizona law ( it is unreal that he did not do research prior to verbalizing his FALSE interpretations ). CBS news as a whole is comprised of LIES. If Bob wants to discuss the FACTS he should watch FOX news to find out the TRUTH. CBS News is now a shill for the Obama administration! Congrats CBS News!!! May all your sponsors withdraw....

There is a distinct difference in how Fox News and the other networks report the news. Critics of Fox are quick to say "Fox pushes hard right" which is subjective.

What the critics fail to explain is why not a single other network finds
value in reporting some stories found on Fox.
Surely, among ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, and MSNBC, one of them can reach the decision to report as Fox does.
If not, is there something they all have in common, which Fox does not?
To some the answer is obvious, to others they cannot see behind a blind spot they remove to look beyond.

Why was Holder not questioned, and why CBS has not reported on the New Black panther story. How could Bob Schafer white wash the law suit of Arizona...

The self-destruction of an icon......
how can we believe ANYTHING Bob Scheiffer says? He's a complete phony, and the Eric Holder interview reveals it: first he completely misrepresents the text/impact of the Arizona law (NO Bob, it does NOT authorize police to stop people and demand to see their papers); second: a senior staff DOJ prosecutor resigns and proves that Obama and his AG are selectively enforcing the law BASED ON RACE. and Scheiffer? NO MENTION.
(is Bob incompetent? Lazy? Senile? Sloppy? Dedicated to protecting this President's agenda? does it matter?).
It's time for Bob to go.

I am, like others commenting here, amazed that CBS continues to ignore the New Black Panther Party voter intimidation story. By now everyone has heard about it and they, like me, cannot understand how the major news channels just ignore it. I am sure Shieffer was told to stay away from the topic during his interview and he obediently did so. Discrimination works both ways - all ways - throwing out cases because a Black was intimidating White voters in Philly is criminal; just like it would be if the KKK showed up at a Georgia polling place and intimidated Black voters - for sure that case would not be thrown out by Holder though! Is this really America? And the major nbews networks just ignoring it makes me (and everyone else, I expect) wonder how much propaganda we are swallowing each day and this is just one little tidbit that we know about? Media is powerful and can be sinister - here is a good example of the latter...

I really don't think bob was even aware of the story, as it was not covered much, if at all, on CBS, or the other "major" networks. I've heard Bob interviewed before where he was unaware of stories if they were not deemed important by the mainstream media
