I've always thought that the best things about America can usually be found embodied in our national music. In fact, as Peter Drier and Richard Flacks observed in a 2002 Nation article, "Most Americans are unaware that much of our patriotic culture--including many of the leading icons and symbols of American identity--was created by artists and writers of decidedly left-wing and even socialist sympathies."

That includes, most decidedly, our music. "A look at the songs sung at post-9/11 patriotic tribute events and that appear on the various patriotic compilation albums, or the clips incorporated into film shorts celebrating the 'American spirit,' reveals that the preponderance of these originated in the forgotten tradition of left-wing patriotism."

So, in honor of July 4th, here's my top twelve list of America's most patriotic songs (in random order), with accompanying videos. It's a highly subjective list which could go on and on, so please use the comments field below to cite your own favorites and we can have a happy argument about it.

Power and Glory, Phil Ochs

We Can't Make It Here Anymore, James McMurtry

Come All Ye Coal Miners, Sarah Ogan Gunning

This Land is Your Land, Pete Seeger & Bruce Springsteen (Obama Inauguration Version)

We Almost Lost Detroit, Gil Scott-Heron

The House I Live In, Paul Robeson

Cortez the Killer, Dave Matthews Band with Warren Haynes covering Neil Young

Volunteers, Jefferson Airplane

The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll, Christy Moore covering Bob Dylan

500 Miles, Rosanne Cash

A Change is Gonna Come, Sam Cooke

Lawyers, Guns and Money, Warren Zevon

Looking through the comments on this one has been hilariously predictable. Most Americans don't have the slightest idea what patriotism is. And those who take the most vocal pride in their patriotism almost always have the least idea. Nationalism isn't patriotism. Jingoism isn't patriotism. "My Country Right or Wrong" definitely isn't patriotism. Patriotism is voting for the good of your country rather than your narrow views. Patriotism is being willing to admit the flaws of your country in order to fix them. Patriotism is opposing your country when it commits evil, in order to keep it to its original noble goals.

Where's The Battle Hymn of the Republic? What about American Patrol? The Stars and Stripes Forever? America, My Country? ... and those are just for starters.

Seriously........???!!!
What about "Proud to be an American" or "Eighth of November"? That's just two on a very long list, that I'm not seeing up here. I can honestly say that this list is borderline offensive to our troops and our country. How quickly people lose sight of what patriotism is. This list is almost pure garbage!

What planet are you from? You must have dropped out of a public school to actually believe any of this is patriotic!

Mr. Rothberg,

I listened to most of your songs, yet I could not find much patriotism in any of them. Perhaps that was your point, I'm not sure. But one thing I am 100% sure of is this- There is nothing POLITICAL in PATRIOTISM.

Of course there is! Are you going to tell me the civil rights movement isn't something to celebrate? Or the fight against the Vietnam war? Standing up for what you believe in when others tell you you're wrong is about as American as you can get! Not singing retarded songs like "Proud to be an American," or wearing flags at sporting events, which technically, you're not supposed to do anyway. Do you know flag burning is legal, or how to even fold one properly? Have you spoken out against injustice in this country? Then you can call yourself patriotic.

Um, this seems like kind of a rediculous list considering all of the songs you could have picked.
