Would-Be Baby Snatcher Stabs Couple, Cops Say
(CBS/ AP)
Prosecutors have filed formal charges against a Terre Haute woman accused of stabbing a couple in an attempt to kidnap their newborn son.
Thirty-four-year-old Stephanie Foster was charged Friday with attempted murder, attempted armed robbery, aggravated battery and attempted criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon. She is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Vigo County Superior Court, when she may get an attorney.
Foster is being held without bond in the county jail.
Police say Foster faked pregnancy after having a miscarriage nine months ago, then plotted to steal a newborn and pass it off as her own.
Authorities say Foster attacked Ashley and Michael Speer in their Prairie Creek, Ind. home Wednesday. Ashley Speer was hospitalized is expected to recover.
As Foster was taken into custody, the pillows she'd used to fake a pregnancy for months fell to the ground, reports CBS News Correspondent Cynthia Bowers.
Police say that, as her original due date approached, Foster scoured local birth announcements and arbitrarily zeroed in on the Speers.
Foster used a ploy to get into their home, asking to use their phone, Vigo County Sheriff Jon Marvel told CBS News Correspondent Anthony Mason on "The Early Show on Saturday Morning."
Then, she allegedly began stabbing a terrified Ashley, then Michael, before he subdued her and called for help. The baby slept through the horrifying attack.
"She gave us a full statement as to how it occurred," Marvel said.
Ashley is in stable condition after being upgraded from critical, Vigo County Prosecutor Terry Modesitt told Mason. Michael was treated and released.
Marvel says Foster went "to great extremes" to convince people she was pregnant, even putting a pint mixer stick under her clothes and moving it to make it appear the fetus was kicking. "For nine months," he added, "she was very, very cunning in an attempt to disguise her not being pregnant."
"In 25 years of law enforcement," State Police Sgt. Joe Watts told reporters, "I don't know that I've come upon this knd of call."
But it does happen, Bowers points out.
In 2004, a Kansas woman who was faking a pregnancy, tracked down a pregnant Missouri woman, Bobbi Jo Stinnet and killed her. She cut out the child and drove home. The baby survived. The killer Lisa Montgomery is on death row.
The most similar case to this one involves a 36-year-old woman, Shannon Torrez who slashed a young Missouri mom's throat and took her baby four years ago. Torrez had suffered a miscarriage and was desperate to have a child with her new husband. The mother survived. Torrez is serving a 30-year-sentence.
