Obama to Outline New Health Care Regulations

By
CBSNews
(CBS/AP)  President Obama is revealing details of how the U.S. government will enforce the health overhaul law, an announcement expected to focus on how insurance companies must treat consumers.

Administration officials were meeting privately Tuesday at the White House with insurance company CEOs and state insurance commissioners, the White House said in a written statement, with Obama expected to attend at least part of the session.

The president was then expected to announce regulations for implementing consumer safeguards enacted by the law, according to administration allies who were briefed in advance and spoke on condition of anonymity.

CBSNews.com Special Report: Health Care Reform

The events mark 90 days since Obama signed the health revamp into law, one of his administration's chief victories so far.

Public support for the president's health care reforms has risen since the bill's passage, an Associated Press-GfK poll found earlier this month. Americans remained divided, with 45 percent in favor and 42 percent opposed to the president's signature domestic accomplishment. But the shift in public sentiment is significant and could affect the November congressional election and Obama's hopes for winning another term in 2012.

The United States is the only major industrial democracy that lacks a comprehensive national health insurance system, leaving tens of millions of Americans uninsured at a given time.

Consumers who buy their policies directly faced increases averaging 20 percent this year, according to a survey released Monday by the private Kaiser Family Foundation. Although most Americans are covered on the job, about 14 million purchase insurance on the individual market and have the least bargaining power when it comes to costs.

The law's consumer safeguards, called the patients' bill of rights, are limited steps that take effect this year. The main provisions, including federal funding to help 32 million uninsured people get coverage, won't come until 2014. The administration worries that escalating premiums will force more people drop their policies before the law is fully implemented.

Starting in 2014, all Americans will be required to carry health insurance. The government will provide tax credits to help middle-class people not covered at work buy a policy through new competitive health insurance markets.

Obama foreshadowed parts of his announcement last week, telling a nurses' group that the patients' bill of rights would include the elimination of lifetime dollar limits on coverage, a particular problem for people dealing with hard-to-treat types of cancer. Insurance companies would be prohibited from canceling the policies of people who get sick, he added. And health plans would be required to provide consumers with simple and clear information about their choices and rights.

The law also calls for other safeguards to be put in place this year, including allowing women to pick an ob-gyn specialist as their primary care doctor and forbidding insurers from denying coverage to children on account of a previous medical problem. Protection against insurance denials would extend to adults in 2014, when most Americans would be required to carry coverage.

This is nonsense. According to Real Clear Politics, gallup and other polls, 58% of Americans are opposed to Obama's new health care tax increase. CBS news seems to poll only Democrats which always produces a skewed left result.

Here is what Obama's new health care will do:

- The biggest tax increase in US history.
- Millions more unemployed as the government cuts health care costs.
- Federally required, tax payer funded abortions for certain groups of women (this is called population control or "thinning the herd" to "save the planet" for the far left who brought this monster into existence.)
- Doctor's and nurses' salaries will be reduced dramatically causing a massive abandonment of health care by professionals including virtually no new folks wanting to amass the 400 thousand $ required for 13 years of medical school and internship simply to become controlled by the D student government bureaucrats now running health care.
- Required death panels, death pills and death machines for those of us 60 and over.
- Restriction of any and all expensive cancer and Aids procedures, cancellation of costly machines and pharmaceuticals for those in the middle class.
- 15 million new illegal immigrants using (and abusing) the new very expensive but touted as "free" health care promise.
- 2 trillion more spent on the 3 million new bureucrats running health care, none of them have a clue how to heal the sick nor provide an increase in life span or quality of life for the 310 million of us who used to have the best health care in the world.

With Obama's new health care bureacracy and stoppage of real health care, we will now be required, like the Chinese, to "go to the mountain to die" when we turn 60 or get sick.

What a ridculous statement. They also get free housing, free food and free healtcare. But what they don't have is their freedom.

If you think jail has better healthcare than free citizens, you are crazy and do not deal with reality.

The "rich" class warfare crap has to end. Keep it up and the so called "rich" will move their wealth somewhere other than the US and then where will you be? Nobody left to tax except for who?

Too bad for them, they had 8 years and chose to do nothing.
Now it's someone else turn and they are actually accomplishing something and it's eating a whole in the right's stomach.

First, the Democrats took control of both the House and Senate in Jan 2007, undeniable fact.

Second, what have they actually accomplished since being elected?

10% unemployment
$1.6 Trillion dollar deficits
$1 Trillion dollar deficits for the next 10 years
$13 Trillion dollar debt, $3 Trillion with Obama in 16 months, $5T Bush 8 Years.
Control of Auto Companies (GM & Chrysler)
Control of Banks (to many to count)
Control of Insurance (AIG, largest insurance companing in America)
Control of Home Mortages (Freddie & Fannie)
Control of Student Loans (In the Healthcare law, OMG)
Control of Healthcare
Control of Energy (CAP & TAX is coming soon)

Both wars continue
Gitmo still open
KSM in New York

Medicare is bankrupt
Medicaid is bankrupt
Social Security is bankrupt
Amtrak is bankrupt
Post office is bankrupt
Freddie and Fannie is bankrupt
California and New York is going bankrupt
USA going bankrupt

And the hits just keep on coming, you all should be so proud of what the Democrats have done.

Texas unemployment has gone down, not up. Arizona is trying to put a stop to it and the Obama administration wants to sue.

Priceless.............

"The United States is the only major industrial democracy that lacks a comprehensive national health insurance system, leaving tens of millions of Americans uninsured at a given time. "

Health care aside, when are people gonna start acknowledging that America is no longer an industrial country. We are a service industry and the majority of our GDP comes from service related purchases and sales.

The need was only to ensure everyone could buy health insurance. Everyone always had medical care. Obama signed an unknown health care bill into law. Now, a 100 days later, he is going to 'tell' everyone what the new regulations will be. You really got to be stupid to support this, at this point.
by punkin369 June 22, 2010 12:08 PM EDT
FYI: I dont support it, I was making a statement on society not the bill

a lot more so than calling everyone who disagrees with you 'communist'
by chevyhotrod June 22, 2010 12:09 PM EDT
Communist is an economic term and philosophy that has been tried and fail every time it has been tried.

Why do people never learn from past mistakes?

I do not call everyone that disagrees with me a communist, only the ones that espouse those beliefs.

Like the individuals that go after private enterprise vs government monopolies and control through regulations.

Perhaps he can explain the MUSLIM EXEMPTION. That's right, while AMERICAN citizens are forced to pay, Muslims are exempt. The Muslim religion considers insurance a form of gambling and that offends them. DUH! Insurance has always and will always be a form of gambling. What a convenient excuse for Obama's Muslim brothers. Can't wait to see how many Muslims are in this country once the census is complete............
