Children Die While Parents Watch World Cup

Police say two Ugandan children died in a fire while their parents watched a World Cup match on television nearby.

Police in Uganda have warned parents against leaving children alone in houses following the death of an 8- and 10-year-old in the Kayunga district west of Kampala.

Kayunga police official Henry Kolyanga said the house in which the children were sleeping caught fire. "The mother and father of the children left a candle burning and went to watch the match on television in a nearby trading center," Kolyanaga said.

He added it was likely the candle was hit by a rat and it lit the tablecloth, "which subsequently lit other household property."

I will bet anyone that those candles were made in China and burn only when they are lying flat.

I can say that I haven't watched a complete sports game in ages, so I have a right to express outrage at this.

It's Uganda, folks. They must have been rich just to own a candle in the first place.

Shame on CBS. What a heartless and inflammatory way to report this tragic news.

agreed. frankly, this story does not rise to the level of newsworthy outside the township or country where it occurred. hardly something that deserves worldwide attention.

Agreed, dronemonk and justsane.

As if home fires in the US never start as a result or an unattended candle or children's deaths are never a result of a neglectful or absent parent here either, especially when major sports events are on TV. Similar has happened in the US and sadly, will happen again. *sigh*
