(AP)  Miss Ellie, a small, bug-eyed Chinese Crested Hairless dog whose pimples and lolling tongue helped her win Animal Planet's "World's Ugliest Dog" contest in 2009, has died at age 17 after a career in resort show business in the Smoky Mountains.

The Mountain Press reported Thursday that Ellie starred in shows at the Comedy Barn in Pigeon Forge.

She also appeared on The Animal Planet cable show "Dogs 101" and was on billboards and in a commercial.

Pigeon Forge Mayor Keith Whaley proclaimed Nov. 12 as "Miss Ellie Day" for her owner's efforts to raise money for the local humane society. Over the years, Ellie helped raise more than $100,000 for the Sevier County Humane Society.

She will be cremated.

Miss Ellie was a one of a kind..
My gift..
Thank you to everyone for kind words. She was ugly for a cause, not cause she's ugly. she entered the contests every year to raise awareness for shelter dogs everywhere.

Miss Ellie is a beautiful dog! Her age is showing and she has had her teeth removed and her skin is characteristic for Chinise Crested. Try to understand why her tongue sticks out.....she has had her teeth removed and when this happens to an animal the tongue does stick out!
We all get old and lose that youthful beauty only to become beautiful in a different way. The majority of seniors in any species have a certain attraction to them....but in my experience with dogs...they have much more beauty in old or any age because being beautiful is not something that is important to them----being loved is their thing!!
17 years is very very old for a dog. It looks as though she has a problem seeing as well as having not teeth.

A lesson for all of us: When it comes to having troubles, Dogs Don't Care, they will do their utmost to just act normal, not let anything get them down.
