Israeli Commandos Storm Aid Flotilla, 9 Killed

(CBS/AP)  Last Updated at 9:25 p.m. ET.

Israeli commandos rappelled down to an aid flotilla sailing to thwart a Gaza blockade on Monday, clashing with pro-Palestinian activists on the lead ship in a botched raid that left at least nine passengers dead.

Bloodied passengers sprawled on the deck and troops dived into the sea to save themselves during several hours of hand-to-hand fighting that injured dozens of activists and six soldiers. Hundreds of activists were towed from the international waters to Israeli detention centers and hospitals.

International condemnation was swift and harsh as Israel scrambled to explain how what was meant to be a simple takeover of a civilian vessel went so badly awry.

Photos: Protests Against Israeli Flotilla Raid

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu abruptly canceled a planned meeting with President Barack Obama in Washington to rush home. The global reaction appeared likely to increase pressure to end the embargo that has plunged Gaza's 1.5 million residents deeper into poverty.

CBS News correspondent Richard Roth reports that Israel claims the first five ships were boarded without incident, and the battle came on the sixth. Most of the information about what happened on the single ship where violence broke out came from Israel, which cut off all communication to and from the activists and provided testimony and video evidence that its soldiers came under attack by activists armed with metal rods, knives, slingshots and two pistols snatched from the troops.

Passengers reached at an Israeli hospital and journalists aboard the ship accused the soldiers of using excessive force. One passenger, who identified himself as American, spoke briefly with reporters.

"I'm not violent. What I can tell you is that there are bruises all over my body. They won't let me show them to you," he said before he was pushed away by a security escort.

A soldier identified only as a sergeant told reporters at a military briefing that the activists on board "were armed with knives, scissors, pepper spray and guns." He said he was armed only with a paintball rifle. "It was a civilian paintball gun that any 12-year-old can play with," he said. "I saw my friends on the deck spitting blood."

Israeli military video showed commandos beaten as they boarded the ship and one thrown overboard. Not expecting such resistance, Israel said some troops had weapons that fired only paintballs to subdue a crowd, reports Roth.

The high-seas confrontation was a nightmare scenario for Israel, which insisted its soldiers were simply unprepared for what awaited them on the Mavi Marmara, the ship carrying 600 of the 700 activists headed for Gaza. Instead of carrying their regular automatic rifles, the Israelis said they went in with non-lethal paintball guns and pistols they never expected to use.

Israel intercepted the six ships carrying some 10,000 tons of aid for the isolated seaside territory, which has been blockaded by Israel for three years, with Egypt's cooperation. The Israeli government had urged the flotilla not to try to breach the blockade before the ships set sail from waters off Cyprus on Sunday and offered to take some aid in for them.

Israel has allowed ships through five times, but has blocked them from entering Gaza waters since a three-week military offensive against Gaza's Hamas rulers in January 2009.

Key regional ally Turkey withdrew its ambassador on Monday, the U.N. Security Council held an emergency session, the British foreign secretary demanded an end to the blockade of Gaza, and Jordan called Israel's raid a "heinous crime."

An al-Jazeera journalist delivering a report before Israel cut communications said Israel fired at the vessel before boarding it. In one web posting, a Turkish television reporter on the boat cried out, "These savages are killing people here, please help" — a broadcast that ended with a voice shouting in Hebrew, "Everybody shut up!"

Al-Jazeera said that eight staff members were detained while covering the story, and asked for the Israeli government to release them immediately.

The military said naval commandos descending from a helicopter onto the deck of a Turkish-flagged ship were assaulted by armed activists. Military footage showed activists swarming around the commandos as they rappelled from a helicopter one by one, hitting them with sticks until they fell to the deck, throwing one off the ship and hurling what the military said was a firebomb.

Speaking alongside the Canadian prime minister, Netanyahu expressed "regret" for the loss of life but said the soldiers "had to defend themselves, defend their lives, or they would have been killed."

Activists said Israeli naval commandos stormed the ships after ordering them to stop in international waters, about 80 miles from Gaza's coast.

A spokeswoman for the Free Gaza movement, which organized the flotilla, said the group's goal — beyond just bringing supplies to the impoverished territory — was to shatter the blockade.

"What we're trying to do is open a sea lane between Gaza and the rest of the world," Greta Berlin said in Cyprus. "We're not trying to be a humanitarian mission. We're trying to say to the world, 'You have no right to imprison a million and a half Palestinians."'

Israel's international image had already taken a beating from allegations that it committed war crimes during its 2008-2009 winter war in Gaza, and from widespread global opposition to the blockade. Hamas was also accused of rights violations in that conflict.

Relations with Turkey, a key supporter of the aid flotilla but also until recently Israel's staunchest ally in the Muslim world, were badly damaged by Monday's events, possibly irreparably. Ankara announced it would recall its ambassador and call off all military exercises with Israel. Around 10,000 Turks marched in protest.

At the U.N., Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu called the raid "murder conducted by a state" and demanded an immediate Israeli apology, international legal action and an end to the blockade.

The bloody showdown came at a sensitive time for Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking. Netanyahu had hoped to receive a high-profile expression of support from Obama after months of strained relations over Israeli settlement construction.

Obama voiced "deep regret," over the raids, and the White House said he and Netanyahu agreed by phone to reschedule White House talks. The U.S. recently began mediating indirect peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians following a 17-month breakdown in contacts.

Israel's immediate concern on Monday was what to do about the boats and their passengers. It ferried the wounded to hospitals by helicopter and towed the six ships to port, giving each of the activists a choice of deportation or detention.

By late Monday, about 150 of the activists — most from Turkey — had been taken off the boats, Israeli Interior Ministry spokeswoman Sabine Haddad said, adding the process would continue into Tuesday. She said about 30 had agreed to be deported, and the rest would be detained.

A commando who spoke to reporters on a naval vessel off the coast, identified only as "A," said he and his comrades were taken off guard by a group of Arabic-speaking men when they rappelled onto the deck. He said some of the soldiers were stripped of their helmets and their pistols and some had jumped overboard to escape the violence.

A high-ranking naval official displayed a box confiscated from the boat containing switchblades, slingshots, metal balls and metal bats.

Turkey's NTV network showed activists beating one commando with sticks as he landed on deck. Dr. Arnon Afek, deputy director of Chaim Sheba Medical Center outside Tel Aviv, said two commandos were brought in with gunshot wounds. Another had serious head wounds, Afek added.

At Barzilai hospital in the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon, a few activists trickled in under military escort, claiming they had been beaten during the assault.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the Israeli "massacre" and declared three days of mourning across the West Bank.

Ismail Haniyeh, leader of the rival Hamas government in Gaza, condemned the "brutal" Israeli attack and called on U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to intervene.

After nightfall, Hamas-linked militants fired a rocket that exploded in Israel, the militants and the Israeli military said. Nobody was hurt. The militants said the rocket attack was in response to Israel's raid on the flotilla.

to all pro-Israelis in the forum, and other friends. we can consider each other as never changing enemies, and also we can forget the history behind the middle east challenge. yesterday was yesterday and today is today. also we can consider Muslim countries as symbol of terrorism, horror and and Israel as the maid of Orleans, symbol of democracy and truth. and then, lets watch the image: a lovely hero rounded by savage enemies. so we must help israel to protect herself, and let her to do everything without any sanction. let her to build the largest getho in history, let him to imprison mothers and sisters and first degree relatives of arab terrorists as a common punishment, let her to destroy arab houses, gardens and cities. let her to destroy whole country to defeat a small group of a gorilla(I mean 2005 war between Israel and Hizbollah, also the advantage was not a win!)....(and I do not know why we have not any chance or right to remember the nazi behavior in World War 2 against partisans ?). ok, let israel to do everything because we consider her as a democratic state. what a miracle, and I dont know if 30's germany was a democratic one or not! so arabs... a race without dignity, without price, cowards and rats, and its not important when in each conflict the rate of causalities of them are at least 10 times more than Israelis. maybe there are some differences between an arab life and an israeli ones (I ma a fool, so enlighten me!). lets consider a world, that every one have no right to think, and just repeat what you say. what a beatifull world for you, isnt it?

This entire flotilla was a propaganda tool for Palestinians... They were warned repeatedly by Israel... They wanted to provoke a response though. This was the whole reason for the flotilla. They wanted to make sure that they got the respose they were looking for by beating soldiers with clubs... The IHH, who was one of the major organizers of the flotilla was known as a terrorist supporter with ties to other Islamic groups. One woman, on the flotilla, was even quoted afterward as saying that their mission was to either reach Gaza or be martyred... Translation... Radical Islam!!!

Their motivation is not that much different from terrorism. You provoke a response from Israel and then cry to the world when it comes... It's amazing the number of people that blindly listen to perpetrators of terrorism and take their side without question... You see multiple people here on this site....

Radical Islam is evil!

You sound like recording. You keep wanting to make this our war on terror it's not. It is a problem that has existed since Isreal became a state. It's not our war!

BY GOD WE DO NOT NEED TO HELP ANOTHER COUNTRY THAT DISREPECTS US WE ALREADY HAVE AN AFGAN PRESIDENT WHO IS A PIECE OF S--T! NO MORE.

The leader of Isreal has taken it upon himself to thumb his nose at the U.S. That is the issue. Let it sink in. There is nothing complex about it. Bibi goes or we shouldn't pay, play, or support.

miami_don... These people are terrorists... I saw the video of them beating soldiers with pipes and clubs to elicit the response that they got... I see how many suicide bombers and terrorist attacks that Israel has had to endure. I see how many missiles are fired into Israel... These people use their own children as human shields and are taught how great it is to die in the name of Allah... They even use children as suicide bombers...

Israel disrespects us??? I don't think so. If anything, this administration disrespects them... He tells the world that he shouldn't meddle in Iran's affairs but won't hesitate to meddle in Israel's...

Unlike you, I do know a lot of the history of the region... I can not condone or support the Palestinians when they have continually refused peace and having their own country in favor of terrorism and a goal of the destruction of Israel...

It is not our war and I don't want it to be... It's fine to criticize Israel when they're wrong but, considering what they are up against, they should be supported when they aren't, like in this case... What's sickening is to see people like you spreading radical Islam's propaganda for them...

American has a history of being pro-Israeli however the blind faith of many has been tested by Prime Minister Netanyahu. The incidents with the ships and even the blockading of Gaza make it really hard to believe that Bibi has any intention of ever allowing there to be a peace process. His past accolades include personally wrecking the Clinton Presidency's Middle East Peace Process and he refuses to work with Obama.

His disrespect of us is so deep that the Prime Minister of Israel's brother-in-law publically called the American President anti-Semitic, quoted Rev. Jeremiah Wright as if the words were Obama's, and made references to the President's Muslim background. This was done without even an acknowledgment that Michelle Obama's cousin was one of the most respected African American Rabbis in the United States.

It is one thing having our own home grown right-wing-religious zealots like Rand Paul barking like a pack of mad dogs but coming from a family member of a foreign power, speaking in public, sounded like something from Iran and not our strongest ally. Further, it makes me suspicious that the one nation on earth that should not harbor any racism is becoming the thing that caused its very creation. Frankly, I find it disgusting and disturbing that racial hatred is coming so easily from the mouths of Israelis.

That Israel can treat our nation with such disregard shouldn't be surprising we only have to remember the attack on the USS Liberty. This publicity crap about the ships being violent is a shame. The truth is the whole operation was so poorly handled that the violence on the last ship was predictable.

Israel has one of the finest intelligence agencies in the world and they did not become that good without understanding how to handle problems discreetly. However, under the leadership of Bibi (who thinks he still is a commando) the State of Israel jumps from one blunder to the next: The intentional destruction of Gaza infrastructure in the last military incursion; the assassination in Dubai that left a trail a cub scout could have followed; and intercepting a aid convey on the high sea and killing passengers because the boarding party could not control the crowd.

I am not friend of any terrorist but it is time to reappraise our praternal relationship with Israel. After Iraq this should the time to start formatting a real and lasting peace in the Middle East. However I do not think there is even a shot at anything lasting more than a few days or months until Iran, Syria, and sadly Israel change direction.

Frankly I am tired of Bibi and his pranks and until the Israeli public gets him out of office maybe it is time to just let them stand by themselves for awhile. Isn't that the way we treat our spoiled children when they go to far? A little time-out just might be good for them.

miami_don, I would assert that you are a friend of terrorists...

This was a propaganda mission by radical Islam from the very start... They provoked Israeli soldiers by beating them with clubs to get the response that they were looking for... When they did, they yelled to the world as loud as they could "look what Israel has done". It's the same strategy that they use with terrorism... It would not work except for people like you. Not only was the IHH from Turkey identified by the CIA as a terrorist supporter with ties to extremist groups but one of the members of this flotilla was quoted as saying their mission was to either get to Gaza or be martyred... Translation... Radical Islam.

There was a naval blockade on Gaza because they've fired thousands of rockets into Israel... I would say that, even under Obama, the United States would not even allow one missile to be fired into this country without a massive retaliation...

President Clinton's Middle East peace process? Israel agreed to give the Palestinians virtually everything they asked for... Yasser Arafat turned them down without even a counter proposal and redoubled terrorism efforts... Even Arabs were amazed at this reaction. Surely you know this?

I don't know whether President Obama is anti-Semetic or not but his support of Israel is luke warm at best... Jeremiah Wright is definitely anti-Semetic though and Obama listened to this guy for 20 years... Nothing he has done thus far shows that his sermons didn't have any effect.

Israel has not been perfect by any means. They have however been at least morally equal to any nation that has faced similar circumstances... They face radical Islam on a daily basis!!!

Sir, you side with terrorists... The same people who purposefully target women and children... Does this make you feel good about yourself?

I would suggest you are an idiot. Where does that leave us?

You don't get it. The man you are so eager to support does not like you.

If they want to disrespect us then let them sit in the do-do they made for once without us. We are the only country in the world that has stood by them from the very beginning - Bibi needs to go.

to hezen plus radical knuckleheads:

no worries.

i intentionally stand with israel for reasons that i have in part set out below.

i am more than a buddhist.

there are growing numbers of my kind that are re-shaping themselves into an energenic storm.

i am not pretending to be a holy man.

i have recently changed myself energetically to aligning very strongly on the conservative side, because i clearly see huge-rats, scorpions, hideous beings/entities & ill-gods massing on the radical, terrorist, & ultra-liberal side of the conceptual war plank.

eons ago, when i was more completely of scottish/germanic origin, i was known as thor. ahem...i must admit i was less kind then.

as a buddhist, my goddess protector is kali.

so as a buddhist i have no problem in killing in self defense, or protecting others in harms way of vermin.

i do not seek nirvana.

i seek showing up to learn my lessons that i originally sought when the veil was lifted, & thereafter made my decision for coming to this gross physical realm.

no worries.

have a nice day.

I'm a Southern Liberal and just so we both understand I would have no problem blowing your conservative butt away either if you violated my home are family. My goddess is Colt Commander.

The conservative side of you really needs to take a really long meditative look into the trash you just sent out in regard to vermin and other such insults that you feel so free to heap on liberal thinking individuals. Frankly, I am really tired of this right leaning moral high ground that each of you hugs like it is a personal teddy bear to comfort you and keep you warm through the long night. You folks have porked-the-porker and I have trouble understanding how any of you can justify your very existence.

Your conservative foreign policies left us embarrassed in front of the world. Your last administration openly supported torture. We invaded a nation looking for WMD's that didn't exist. Our President flew onto the flight deck of a carrier and declared a war over that still lingers on. Did I mention he told us all to go shopping to show our support for the troops?

Your conservative domestic policies were at best a fiasco and have left us with a hollowed out middleclass and years of recovery still ahead of us. The oil spill in the Gulf, the bank failures, Wall Street derivatives can be traced back to your conservative willingness to dismantle or gut regulatory bodies whose purpose was to protect the public.

You cut taxes and it felt so good you cut some more to the point we couldn't pay our bills. So, we sold our debt to Mainland China. Would you to tell me how much money we had to pump into your conservative economy just to keep it afloat? Keeping in mind this was after your conservatives took us from a surplus economy to deficit.

Ignorance is not virtue even for Buddhist so allow me to leave you with this thought: " I recommend being gentle with yourself and loving yourself unconditionally, regardless of what comes your way. " In your case I would also recommend you try a little kindness with others until you really understand your chosen religion.

Texas liberal, you are clueless about maritime law. You've probably never been in a boat. Your post is a bunch of rubbish. You are spewing the propaganda trash of Hammas (sp). It is an organization that has no credibility--even with the people it is supposedly trying to represent. I bet you didn't even know that, did you? Yeah, go Google it now so you can come up with some witty retort now.

Israel gave the so-called love boat brigade clear and specific warnings to stop and turn around as they approached the BLOCKADE! Boarding and inspecting the vessels after making such warnings is hardly piracy. The goods will be forwarded to an appropriate nonprofit group serving the Palestinians.

So drop the phony outrage. Don't speak anymore about something you are clueless about. Piracy? You're just trying to get into the drama. You have no stake in this issue. I doubt you even understand the history of the Middle East, let alone the endless tension everyone lives with there. But that doesn't stop you from spewing your ignorance. Typical American.

Go help cleanup the oil spill. Visit your local beach and rake up some muck. There, you might have something worth contributing.

Are you just completely clueless??? Radical Islam thinks nothing of murdering women and children... As a matter of fact, they target them purposefully... They've sent thousands of missiles into Israel... That's why there is a naval blockade... Even under Obama, I don't think that even one missile fired into the United States would go unanswered!!!

This ship wanted to provoke Israel into a response for propaganda purposes... One of the flotilla members that was interviewed said that their goals were to either reach Gaza or be martyred...

Why would you help spread radical Islamic propaganda???

So the israeli's were dumb enough to get conned. That's because they act before they think of the consequences. The israeli's treat the Arabs like the blacks were treated in the U.S. before civil rights.

CBS should publish and/or fairly review Daniel Machover's analysis of legal juridiction, i. e. that Turkish courts hold the legal right to try the aid flotilla participants still being detained in Israel and that Israel has no such right.

One of the terrorists attacking the Israeli commandos said, ""We're not trying to be a humanitarian mission."

Turkish news provided videos it took of the commandos being beaten, stabbed, and shot as they rappelled down to the ship's deck.

Israeli emergency medical services said at least two commandos were shot, and one beaten severely in the head with a steel bar, and all were attacked ferociously, as they landed.

Too bad the commandos didn't shoot more of these blood-thirsty "peace loving activists" that were out for their blood.

As for the Gaza. The residents voted for scummy, low-born, violent terrorists to lead them. Hamas immediately sponsored indiscriminant rocket attacks against Israeli civilians as soon as they took power.

If the residents of Gaza act like ferocious, murderous animals, then they will NEVER get a place in the civilized world, and will remain caged, like animals, and deservedly so.

If they would stop putting suicide vests on their six-year-old children, and glorifying a "matyr's death" for them, and than Gaza society might rise above the level of swine. Otherwise, leave them in their swill.

buddharealm,
what do you know about the education system of Greece,France ,Germany,Turkey,Malasia,Ireland,Swiss,....so what about the other countries?I'm a teacher ,and really I know a lot.Because I'm in the system. We teach tolerance to students. They've got lots of friends from different countries and religions.
I didn't have any prejudice until I read this comments.Because I feel sorry for every people even if they're christian, buddist, jewish or muslim.Because muslims believe and respect all the prophets. All of them aren't terrorists.

As an example in history,at the end of the 1400s,the ottoman empire saved the Jewish people from Spain. Our ancestors sent ships(again:))to save those innocent people from death. We didn't kill them.

Agin in the second world war, Our government gave permission for the Jewish people so that they could be alive.Turkey saved The Jewish people from death. Now lots of them and their relatives ''still'' live in Turkey.

Thank you for your warning!!But I think the whole world must wake up and stand against to Israel's violence. As you know every person is valuable.

Just an observation tahres3478..

Did you notice that the Israelis just didn't kill everyone? They could have, you know. What does it tell you of what was, compared to what could have been, if they were as terrible as you claim.
