White House: Oil Spill Isn't Our Katrina

By
Brian Montopoli
(CBS)  White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told Bob Schieffer Sunday that the United States government is doing "everything humanly and technologically possible" to stop the oil leak in the Gulf - despite criticism that it has left too much responsibility to oil company BP and needs to do more.

"The Coast Guard was on the scene moments after the rig exploded in April, Gibbs said on CBS' "Face the Nation." "It certainly has been weeks, and the government is doing everything humanly and technologically possible to plug the hole 5,000 feet below the ocean, and to do everything we can to contain its spread and to deal with its environmental and its economic impacts.

"The president has told the team to spare nothing in trying to cap this well," he said, later adding: "Every bit of government has been activated to try to plug this hole."

Schieffer noted that both Democrats and Repubicans have suggested BP is "lying," "covering up" and "shouldn't be trusted." He asked Gibbs if the federal government trusts the company and what it is telling them.

"Well, Bob, BP is the responsible party, they own the well, they're responsible for capping it," he said. "That effort is overseen by and directed by Admiral Thad Allen, and our commanders on the ground in Louisiana."

Gibbs said that if Admiral Allen has a concern with BP's actions he "calls their CEO on his cell phone."

He acknowledged that "we've had some problems with BP's lack of transparency," noting that it took ten days for a video feed of the leak to be made public.

He said that the government had sent letters to get the company to post its air and water quality data and to "ensure that the dispersants that they're spraying on top of the water and using at a sub-sea level are the least-toxic available."

Asked about a possible criminal investigation by the Justice Department, Gibbs noted that Justice "has been down in the Gulf to look at and to gather information on this," though he said the first priority is to plug the hole.

Gibbs said he had been frustrated that at a contentious press briefing Friday reporters had suggested the government was "standing around doing nothing and hoping for the best.

"I don't think anybody could credibly say … that the government has 'stood around, done nothing and hoped for the best,'" Gibbs said. "We were activated the moment that this oil rig exploded. This has been on the president's agenda ever since that happened."

Asked Schieffer: "Do you think this could be your administration's Katrina?"

"If you look back at what happened in Katrina, the government wasn't there to respond to what was happening," Gibbs replied. "That quite frankly was the problem. Even tracking the hurricane for days and knowing fairly precisely where it was going to hit.

"I think the difference in this case is we were there immediately. We have been there ever since."

Gibbs was also asked about Kentucky GOP Senate candidate Ran Paul's comment that President Obama's criticisms of BP are "un-American." [Paul complained of a "blame-game society" in which someone must always be criticized despite the fact that "maybe sometimes accidents happen."]

"I will tell this to Rand Paul and anybody else that is listening: Laws that were passed after the Exxon Valdez ensured that the taxpayers don't get a bill for this," Gibbs replied. "BP will pay for every bit of this … we have to regulate this industry, we have to make sure that their safety standards are up to the very latest and highest standards whenever they do something like this, drilling in such a precious ecosystem as the Gulf of Mexico."

Schieffer also noted that Sarah Palin drew a link earlier that morning between the response to the spill and what she cast as Mr. Obama's cozy relationship with oil companies tied to their support for his presidential campaign.

"Sarah Palin was involved in that election, but I don't think, apparently, was paying a whole lot of attention," Gibbs said. "I'm almost sure that the oil companies don't consider the Obama administration a huge ally - we proposed a windfall profits tax when they jacked their oil prices up to charge for gasoline.

"My suggestion to Sarah Palin would be to get slightly more informed as to what's going on in and around oil drilling in this country," Gibbs said.

I watched a rebrodcast of an interview with New Orleans mayor Ray Nagan just befoer Katrina. He spoke of how prepared they were with boats and buses set up and at the ready for evacuation and that it was all under control. I remember him drinking a cup of Starbucks during the interview. I remember that during the flooding of New Orleans the then governor of Louisiana saying that everything was under control.
Obviously, mayor Nagan was not telling the truth and between him and the governor, nothing was under control.
The Obama administration has handled this the same way by telling us that they had it under control while matters grew worse for over a month. What might be the situation in the gulf if they had really taken control a month ago instead of just hoping that BP would get it under control before it got too bad.
To those of you who think that the states bordering the gulf should handle this, then why would anyone have ever expected the federal government to get involved in the Katrina mess. This happened more than 3 miles offshore of the nearest state under federal jurisdiction. It is All on the federal government whether folks in other states like it or not. This is going to be much more costly than Katrina, which, by the way, caused a flood problem in New Orleans. The hurricane only hit New Orleans a glancing blow. The destruction was due to the flooding of Lake Pontchartrain that overflowed and broke the levees. This is the same thing that happened in Nashville, a flood. No one even peeped that the government wasn't doing enough and that they hated the people of Nashville. this administration hasn't yet shown a bit of leadership in times of crisis and need. They are a complete, worthless zero on all counts. The only thing that Mr Obama and his administration has shown that they can do is bribe other politicians and abuse the power of the office with unethical offers in return for support.
excuse my spelling on some of the names, but, all the rest is right on

I thought you had written some good stuff for awhile. You were stating facts and staying with the facts and then; well, you just cannot help yourself. I am going to do my best to express this in a concise and simple statement: There is no comparison between a flood and a hurricane.

If you do not understand the difference it is obvious you have never been through one. So here's my offer. Come down to Miami when we have a CAT II or III on the way and stay over for the clean up. After you do that if you go home and write this same garbage, then I want the same drugs you are on.

POTUS parties in Chicago - or has a date with Michelle while the country is in crisis. Just like Nero fiddling while Rome burned. That is bad enough - but then, he can't be bothered to lay a wreath at Arlington Cemetery in honor of our fallen military and those who serve??? What a flipping joke he and those who defend him are! That goes for the press who cover for him as well.

And Bush couldn't have stopped the hurricane....but that didn't seem to matter to the LAMEstream media and bedwetting liberals. All I know is, by 36 days, Bush was here about 8 times.

Barry, on the other hand, will be here on Friday (twice totally) before skipping Memorial Day at the tomb and heading for his 23rd vacation to Chicago.

Showing face does help to ease people's minds and that is unfortunate as it does not equate to any action taking place. However, let's be factual. This is not the 23rd Chicago trip. Also, Bush was there with FEMA director Brown who said everything was under control and yet, media coverage demonstrated something completely different. Kind of like that "Mission Complete" banner huh. The Bush & Obama comparisons are really lame. Neither has been a great president. The focus should be on repair, not name calling. We have three branches of government for balance, not to have a country to the far right or far left. I'm thankful for that.

The "Mission Complete" Banner was to mark the end of the major offensive operation. After that began the long process of trying to re-organize and clean up the resistance in Iraq. What part of that has always been so hard to understand? I say this for the record and the service people involved.

shellfish7890--"YOU PEOPLE"..Obama is our President...we hnor his office;but not his socialistic government actions. Please give us some examples of "all the GOOD THINGS He's DONE". He is a very-self-centered person.."What in it for me or my power." He and his party allowed this oil crisis to happen...don't blame Bush.
I would strongly encourage you to educate yourself about what socialism is doing to our nation's future-we are becoming a government-controlled welfare state.

Just a reminder, Obamie has about two months (August 2010) to pull our troops out of Iraq, or be once again branded a liar...

You are afraid that your social entitlements might get taken away? Leeches need a host to survive, are blind, and will suck you dry until they find another host.

----

Are you talking about Medicare, Social Security, and Medicade? So, that would mean TEA Baggers are leeches...Oh, we agree on that. You see I content that you never stop paying and living here in this nation has a price tag. It is one I willingly pay. I expect others to do the same.

Your conservative Regan political economics have come close to destroying this nation and I think you are all one card short of a full deck.

Now, I am going to bed.

Democrats have controlled the house and senate both for at least 68 of the last 80 years. But for a few years they controlled at least one of the two houses. They have had the presidency for 44 of those years. They have often controlled all 3 branches of government and have had the most opportunity to name appointments to the supreme court. They presently control the legislative and executive branch exclusively. There has never been a decade when democrats weren't in control of committees in congress overseeing every aspect of U.S. law and regulation. Including the past 5 1/2 years. There is absolutely no aspect of U.S. law or regulation that the democratic party hasn't had the opportunity to act upon or change. The only way anywhere possible that any thing at all goes on is with the acceptance or apathy of the democratic party and it's elected leaders

You are so wrong. Your statement sounds convincing but it is half truths. I concluded a long time ago that you folks think that if you tell the lie long enough, that eventually the lie will become a truth.
