"Heretical" Copernicus Reburied as a Hero

(AP)  Nicolaus Copernicus, the 16th-century astronomer whose findings were condemned by the Roman Catholic Church as heretical, was reburied by Polish priests as a hero on Saturday, nearly 500 years after he was laid to rest in an unmarked grave.

His burial in a tomb in the cathedral where he once served as a church canon and doctor indicates how far the church has come in making peace with the scientist whose revolutionary theory that the Earth revolves around the Sun helped usher in the modern scientific age.

Copernicus, who lived from 1473 to 1543, died as a little-known astronomer working in what is now Poland, far from Europe's centers of learning. He had spent years laboring in his free time developing his theory, which was later condemned as heretical by the church because it removed Earth and humanity from their central position in the universe.

His revolutionary model was based on complex mathematical calculations and his naked-eye observations of the heavens because the telescope had not yet been invented.

After his death, his remains rested in an unmarked grave beneath the floor of the cathedral in Frombork, northern Poland, the exact location unknown.

On Saturday, his remains were blessed with holy water by some of Poland's highest-ranking clerics before an honor guard ceremoniously carried the coffin through the imposing red brick cathedral and lowered it back into the same spot where part of his skull and other bones were found in 2005.

A black granite tombstone now identifies him as the founder of the heliocentric theory, but also a church canon, a cleric that ranks below a priest. The tombstone is decorated with a model of the solar system, a golden sun encircled by six of the planets.

At the urging of a local bishop, scientists began searching in 2004 for the astronomer's remains and eventually turned up a skull and bones of a 70-year-old man - the age Copernicus was when he died. A reconstruction made by forensic police based on the skull showed a broken nose and other features that resemble a self-portrait of Copernicus.

In a later stage of the investigation, DNA taken from teeth and bones matched that from hairs found in one of his books, leading the scientists to conclude with great probability that they had finally found Copernicus.

In recent weeks, a wooden casket holding those remains has lain in state in the nearby city of Olsztyn, and on Friday they were toured around the region to towns linked to his life.

The pageantry comes 18 years after the Vatican rehabilitated the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei, who was persecuted in the Inquisition for carrying the Copernican Revolution forward.

Wojciech Ziemba, the archbishop of the region surrounding Frombork, said the Catholic Church is proud that Copernicus left the region a legacy of "his hard work, devotion and above all of his scientific genius."

Saturday's Mass was led by Jozef Kowalczyk, the papal nuncio and newly named Primate of Poland, the highest church authority in this deeply Catholic country.

Poland also is the homeland of John Paul II, the late pope who said in 1992 that the church was wrong in condemning Galileo's work.

Jacek Jezierski, a local bishop who encouraged the search for Copernicus, said that he considers Copernicus' burial as part of the church's broader embrace of science as being compatible with Biblical belief.

"Today's funeral has symbolic value in that it is a gesture of reconciliation between science and faith," Jezierski said. "Science and faith can be reconciled."

Copernicus' burial in an anonymous grave in the 16th century was not linked to suspicions of heresy. When he died, his ideas were just starting to be discussed by a small group of European astronomers, astrologers and mathematicians, and the church was not yet forcefully condemning the heliocentric world view as heresy, according to Jack Repcheck, author of "Copernicus' Secret: How the Scientific Revolution Began."

The full attack on those ideas came decades later when the Vatican was waging a massive defense against Martin Luther's Reformation.

"There is no indication that Copernicus was worried about being declared a heretic and being kicked out of the church for his astronomical views," Repcheck said.

"Why was he just buried along with everyone else, like every other canon in Frombork? Because at the time of his death he was just any other canon in Frombork. He was not the iconic hero that he has become."

Copernicus had, however, been at odds with his superiors in the church over other matters.

He was repeatedly reprimanded for keeping a mistress, which violated his vow of celibacy, and was eventually forced to give her up. He also was suspected of harboring sympathies for Lutheranism, which was spreading like wildfire in northern Europe at the time, Repcheck said.

Copernicus' major treatise - "On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres" - was published at the very end of his life, and he only received a copy of the printed book on the day he died - May 21, 1543.

"Copernicus, who lived from 1473 to 1543, died as a little-known astronomer working in what is now Poland, far from Europe's centers of learning." This is certainly an example of unresearched and ethnically prejudiced journalism. First off, his "real name" name is Miko?aj Kopernik. Elitist Western Europeans changed it for all history. He worked at Krakow's Jagiellonian University which at the time was the 21st oldest university in all of Europe (founded 1364 AD). JU cntinues to exist. At the time of Nikolai's birth Poland not only existed, her borders stretched from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea @ 400,000 sq. miles. Larger than France, England, Scotland and the Netherlands combined. It was the only Englightened nation in all of Europe as its public law permitted citizens to freely practice Roman Catholism, Greek Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism.

Scientifically speaking, even today we use incorrect terms when we refer to "sunrise and sunset." But in everyday speech, these words are both acceptable and accurate, when we keep in mind our terrestrial perspective.

Likewise at Joshua 10:13, Joshua was not discussing astronomy, he was reporting the events from his perspective as he saw them, where the sun and moon seemed motionless to him. Just as the sun may seem to us that it rises in the morning and sets in the evening.

The Reformers such as Martin Luther said of Copernicus: " This fool wishes to reverse the entire science of astronomy."
The Reformers based their argument on a LITERAL INTERPRETATION of certain scriptures such as the account of Joshua chapter 10 that mentions that the sun and moon "kept motionless."

The book Galileo's Mistake explains that while the Protestant Reformation broke the papal yoke, it failed to "shake the essential authority" of Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas, whose views were accepted by Catholic and Protestant alike."
Of course the Bible does not claim to teach science, yet, when the Bible does refer to natural phenomena, it is consistantly accurate.
For example, approximately 2300 years before Christopher Columbus proved the earth was round. It was written at Isaiah 40:22 that the earth was circular. Also, ancient beliefs were that the earth rested on elephants standing on a turtle. Approximately 3500 years before Christ it was written at Job 26:7 that the earth hangs or is suspended on nothing.

Wrong interpretation of God's word the Bible should discredit the interpretor, not the Bible. Likewise evil wrongdoing and crimes done in the false name of Christianity should discredit these hypocritical criminals and not Almighty God and his son Christ Jesus.

Galileo himself always had high regard for Almighty God's word the Bible which he claimed never contradicted his scientific discoveries. Galileo stated, "Both the Holy Scriptures and nature proceed from the Divine Word....Two truths can never contradict one another."

Galileo had no quarrel with the Bible. Instead he questioned tne teachings of the Catholic Church. One religion writer observed: "The lesson to be learned from Galileo, it appears is not that the (Catholic)Church held too tightly to biblical truths; but rather that it did not hold tightly enough." By allowing Greek philosphy to influence its theology, The Catholic Church bowed to tradition RATHER THAN FOLLOW THE TEACHINGS OF THE BIBLE.

laffewi, I guess you're not familiar with Martin Luther's reponse to Copernican's theory.

Martin Luther: "People gave ear to an upstart astrologer who strove to show that the earth revolves, not the heavens or the firmament, the sun and the moon.... This fool wishes to reverse the entire science of astronomy; but sacred Scripture tells us [Joshua 10:13] that Joshua commanded the sun to stand still, and not the earth."

One of the problems Galileo had was that he was trying to tell the Catholic Church how to interpret Scripture.

Also are you aware that Coperncus had actually dedicated his book to Pope Paul III?

Your anti-Catholic propaganda is, as is all anti-Catholic propaganda, void of facts.

Colcarpenter: Anti-Catholic propaganda void of the facts?????

The outrage against pedophile priests and the coverup by the Catholic Church is this just anti-Catholic propaganda void of the facts????
Don't think by trying to strain the gnat you can get everyone to gulp the Camel.
The Catholic Church's evil deeds for centuries has proved Satanic not in anyway Christ like. History confirms that by their wicked crimes and deeds the Catholic Church not only does not follow the Bible they burned those that read and tried to follow it at the stake. To defend the Catholic Church for all of the evil crimes they have committed for centuries is no different than defending Satan. Read Revelation 18:4-8,2thessalonians 2:3-12, John 8:44
Revelation 18:24 states, "Yes in her was found the blood of the prophets and of holy ones and of all those who have been slaughtered on the earth."
Any wonder that Christ says to those falsely claiming to be his representatives on earth (Catholic Church), "I never knew you, get away from me you workers of lawlessness. (matthew 7:15-23, Titus 1:16)

John wycliffe's effort in translating the Bible into English was followed by others. William Tyndale, who had to flee England, produced his new testament in 1526. He was later betrayed to The Catholic Church and strangled at the stake, and his body burned.
The Catholic Church has always done everything in their power to keep their people from reading the truth from God's word the Bible.
Why?
Because all of their doctrines are false, man-made,demon-inspired.(1Timothy 4:1-3) and are condemned in God's word the Holy Bible. Such doctrines as image and idol worship,Mary being the Mother of God, Celebacy,Hellfire, immortality of the soul, trinity which was not invented until the time of Constantine in 381 c.e which explains why it is not found in the Bible.(read encyclopedia Britanica)
The Catholic Church means the "Universal Church". In order for Constantine to unite his vast empire he wanted to create one "Universal religion" fusing both Pagan and Christian into one religion.

To please Constantine and gain worldly power and political influence which Christ always refused and rejected since his Kingdom was no part of this world (read John 6:15,Luke 4:5-8,John 18:36,1 John 5:19) and taught his true followers to do the same (read John 15:17-20)The Christian Church compromised and went completely against Christ's commandments and teachings and became apostate becoming the "Universl or Catholic Church. This Great apostasy was foretold by Christ at Matthew 13:24-30,36-43, and the Apostle Paul 2thessalonians 2:3-12,Acts 20:29-30

It is no wonder why Almighty God tells his people to get out of her if you do not want to share in her sins and do not want receive part of her plagues.(read Revelation 18:4-8) That also includes all other counterfeit christian groups who play false and denounce the true Christ by their disobedient hypocritical actions and do not follow the Bible or the teachings of Christ in their conduct.(read 2 thessalonians 1:6-9)

To be approved by God one must find the truth and true Christianity by studying, reading, learning and following what the Bible really teaches.(read Matthew 7:15-23, 1Timothy 2:3,4,John 17:3,2Tim3:16,17

Now you've done it!!! The Anti-religious will be all over you because you are not speaking like their version of Christians do. This means that to keep peace on the forum you will need to 'condemn them the the 'nether regions' and use all sorts of 'religious phrases' to let them feel superior. (They don't like thinking for them selves about 'faith' and stuff), they like to mark it down as 'voodoo' and ridicule it a bit, so they can put it out of their minds.

Just think the Church of Rome, reburied a "Lutheran" a reformer of the dogmas of the Church of Rome. Since, he had a mistress, I wonder what are his thoughts on forced clergy celibacy and this present day
child rapes by priests around the world?????

Copernicus was buried in a Catholic Church because he was.... well Catholic. He may have been tempted by Protestantism, but in the end was loyal to the one true Church. That's probably why he dedicated his book to Pope Paul III.

"Present day child rapes by Priests". Come on cleric60, you know the sexual abuse within the Catholic Church has largely stopped. Nearly all media stories on that topic are of cases 20 - 60 years old.

Also, don't presume to lecture me about the Bible, which is the Sacred
Scripture of the Catholic Church. If you live to be 100 you will never know as much about that holy book as I do now.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Really? If you claim to know so much of scriptures what are you doing defending the catholic church? Ever hear of the septuagint bible version, or the apocryphal version. Why do you think Revalations refers to the church on the seven hills (Rome) as the prostitute?
