Obama: Arizona Immigration Law is "Misdirected"

Updateds 2:04 p.m. ET

President Barack Obama stepped up his criticism of Arizona's controversial immigration law Wednesday, calling it "misdirected" and warning that it has the potential to be applied in a discriminatory fashion.

Speaking at a joint news conference with Mexico's President Felipe Calderon, Obama called for overhauling the nation's immigration laws and said that can't be done unless Republicans support it.

The controversy over the Arizona law, which would make it a state crime to be in the country illegally, hung over Calderon's visit. Both leaders oppose the law, with Obama directing the Justice Department to review it for possible civil rights violations, and Calderon's government issuing a travel warning for Arizona, out of concern that Mexicans face an adverse political environment there.

Calderon made good on his pledge to take up the immigration issue during his meetings with Obama. He said the Arizona law criminalized migration and could encourage discrimination. He also called for the U.S. and Mexico to work together to solve the complex, politically sensitive immigration issue.

"We can do so if we create a safer border, a border that will unite us instead of dividing us, uniting our people," Calderon said. "We can do so with a community that will promote a dignified life in an orderly way for both our countries."

Almost twice as many people support the Arizona law as those who oppose it, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll this month. It found that 42 percent favored it, 24 percent opposed it and another 29 percent said they were neutral.

Obama has asked the Justice Department to review the law for possible civil rights violations. He said Wednesday that he expects a final review soon, after which his administration will decide how to approach the law.

Obama has promised to start work on an immigration overhaul, but he's also warned that Congress may not have the appetite to take on the sensitive issue this year. He said Wednesday that he can't get the 60 votes he would need in the Senate to pass an immigration bill unless some Republicans step forward. That Republican support could be hard to come by for Obama in an election year.

Obama also reaffirmed his commitment to Calderon's offensive in the deadly drug wars that have affected both sides of the border, saying he admired Calderon's courage in taking on the drug traffickers and cartels that have created a public safety crisis.

"This is not just an issue of the drug trade," Obama said. "This is an issue of how is it affecting people's day-to-day lives in Mexico."

More than 22,700 people have been killed since Calderon deployed tens of thousands of troops and federal police across the country in December 2006 in an offensive against drug traffickers.

Obama said the U.S. has an obligation to deal with the demand for drugs in this country that has helped fuel the drug violence, a stance that has won Obama praise from the Mexican government.

The two leaders spoke during a joint news conference in the White House Rose Garden following a private meeting. Obama will host Calderon at a state dinner Wednesday night.

I wonder why the rest of the border states do not follow Arizonas leadership. Clearly the president is kissing Calderons south side. Making an *ss of himself in the process. Granted there needs to be diplomacy.
That has limits. The law of the land sets these limits. This may be the one term straw for Bamma Man. Sadly he is not living up to his hype as a progressive. Rather becoming a kiss up to Mexico, BP, The Banks, The Insurance industry, The Medical community, The Pro War community, and the list keeps on getting longer. Time to pull him down. His head is swimming in power and it isn't pretty.

The president said he told his Mexican counterpart that the U.S. has a right to secure its borders and decide who is allowed in the country, but implied that the White House will not ignore the desires of those individuals to come to America for a better life.

"We can't just try to use force to prevent that," Mr. Obama said. "On the other hand, the United States has to be able to make determinations about who comes in and who comes out in an orderly fashion."
Is stopping illegals and sending them back to their own nation--using "force". Why can't we use force-do what is the law of our land, Mr. President.

Obama is turning out to be much more of a neophyte than any of us could have guessed. I voted for the man, but will not be making that mistake again. Enough time has passed since the election for us to conclude that Obama is generally making a mess of things, following firmly in GW's incompetent footsteps. Obama's "health care reform" bill increased health care costs for the middle class while levying higher taxes on us so that we now have the privilege of paying for poor people's medical insurance (including illegal immigrants'). Instead of spending stimulus dollars to rebuild infrastructure, hundreds of billions of dollars were squandered on a series of pork barrel programs. Federal spending is now out of control, and last week the Bank of England warned that the US economy now looks a lot like Greece's. Despite all the tough talk about getting out of Iraq and Afghanistan, we're still bleeding blood and treasure on a bunch of ingrates who hate us. And now to top it all, Obama stands in the Rose Garden today with the leader of the most corrupt and miserably failed narco-state in the western hemisphere and defames Arizona's legislators and good citizens so that he can score a few cheap points with ILLEGAL ALIENS. I've now seen enough of this show to understand what is going on. Obama's lack of real-world work experience and management skills have now become blindingly obvious. We got what we bargained for in the last election: a state senator from Illinois whose only real work experience was as an academic, and who now finds himself woefully out of his depth. This Republic cannot withstand two dunces-in-charge in a row. I won't be surprised to see Obama impeached before the end of his first (and only) term. Personally, I am truly disgusted and offended by the traitorous, race-baiting, ill-informed and irresponsible statements Obama made about Arizona's new law today, and I will not forget those comments any time soon.

President Obama is "misdirected" on this issue. Instead of bashing fellow Americans over attempting to protect themselves, because the federal government has FAILED to do so - the President should have apologized to the citizens of Arizona for failing them by not enforcing federal law. This behavior by the President is embarrassing and sickening. Today, the President of the United States stood with another nation against Americans. It is unbelievable!

Obama is our elected leader & therefore should be doing what the majority of Americans want. We as Americans don't care if other countries like our laws, they do not ask us to approve theirs either. The Mexican President does not protect his country, he allows the drug cartel to rule his country with murder & fear, he does not do anything to provide jobs etc for his people, he wants Americans to support his people so he does not have to. We want ALL aid to Mexico stopped, why give them money on top of supporting them with our welfare system. We want new & better paying jobs for Americans, we want good, affordable medical care & insurance, we want our laws enforced we want our neighborhoods to be clear of the drug dealers & gangs that have taken over America. Lets get our own country in shape instead of spending billions on other countries that do not give a crap about any of us, they use our money & military & laugh in our face because they hate us. We Americans must take America back soon or end up living like them.

President Obama is our puppet leader. Our real leader is the President of Mexico Calderon and I would suggest you check with him first to see if he agrees with anything you may think or want from the USA government or we may have to apologize again and I just hate doing that.

What a misdirected administration we have. The Attorney General of the United States has not read the bill, yet wants to challenge it in the courts. Is this the change we get from electing a Community Organizer as President? We should be ashamed,Is there away to skip this part in History and erase our mistake of the past election?
