Do Racy Miss USA Photos, Videos Go Too Far?

The Miss USA pageant is promoting its upcoming pageant with a series of sexy photos and videos.

Last week, reports CBS News Correspondent Ben Tracy, 51 Miss USA hopefuls shot their official contestant photos in Las Vegas. Their look consisted of lacy lingerie, smudged black eyeliner, knee-high boots, cleavage, and plenty of bare skin while they positioned in seductive poses on a large bed - looking almost like a Victoria's Secret event and not like a beauty pageant, some critics assert.

Do the images cross the line - all I the name of grabbing the spotlight - and ratings?

Or is this, as pageant officials say, the new direction of beauty pageants and a chance for contestants to show off confidence in and embrace their own sexuality?

"The Miss USA pageant," says HollywoodReporter.com Editor Andrew Wallenstein, "is very calculatedly trying to get attention by doing something controversial. The more people who hear about it beforehand, the more likely they are to tune in."

But Tara Conner, Miss USA 2006 and a current pageant judge, disagrees. She notes she wore a bikini when she competed, and this year's look is fine by her. "It's really not pushing the envelope," Conner says. " … Basically, a swimsuit is lingerie, just different material. So, I really don't know why everyone has their panties in a wad, because it's the same concept. You're seeing the same amount of skin, but all of the goods are covered, so there's really no issue."

Tara and Miss USA are no strangers to controversy. She nearly lost her crown after reports of substance abuse in 2006.

The next year, Miss Nevada, Katie Rees, lost her title after racy photos hit the Internet.

And last year, Miss California, Carrie Prejean, got into some trouble for comments against gay marriage -- and her own set of racy photos. Eventually, she was fired.

Just a few decades ago, Tracy points out, more than 20 million viewers watched women in one-piece bathing suits in the Miss America pageant. But as the suits got skimpier, that portion of the competition was downplayed -- and viewers fled. That contest is now off the air, a fate Miss USA is trying to avoid.

"Any press is good press," Conner admits. "So -- keep talking!"

But critics at a parents' watchdog group warn this is no longer family viewing.

"There has been a growing debate over the line between a beauty pageant and soft-core pornography," says Tim Winter of the Parents Television Council, " … and I think this year's pageant not only erases that line, it obliterates it."

On "The Early Show" Tuesday, Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization, which operates the Miss USA pageant, defended it in an interview with co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez:

The so called lingerie pictures do nothing for the contestants. They make girls who should be wholesome representatives of America look like ******. It's really sad that the pageant has turned to exploiting these women to increase attention and gain media exposure to the Miss USA event. Obviously few want to watch this pageant and revenues are down. My hope is that people will boycott this program in the future. I don't doubt that Mr. Trump would think nothing of one of his own daughters posing in underwear in this same manner, or he would not have allowed contestants who are viewed as examples of the ideal American woman to pose like this. Main stream America and most of the world's viewpoint however is that dressing our daughters like prostitutes is unacceptable and nothing but demeaning.
The 'celebrity' lifestyle has no relation to everyday people and their values. Yet it seems that this groups "lack of values" are being pushed down our throats everywhere we turn. After all anything is acceptable in the pursuit of the almighty dollar and gaining those increased revenues from advertising dollars. Right? I will not, nor will my sons(in their 20's) nor daughter, be watching this program, again.

Now this is a secret, so don't tell anyone. But lots of guys like the way their breasts bounce in the bathing suit part. Me included! But it does seem however, that there is some contraption in their bikini tops that seems to dampen the bouncing, you know, kinda like waveless waterbeds. Wish they'd outlaw those contraptions.

I would not call any of them photos racy. You can see more skin on any daytime soap opera.

No. Only in the in sexually repressed, religion-dominated countries like Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, or the USA would such a stupid question be asked.

Are they attractive pictures? No doubt the women are beautiful, but I find their tasteless eye makeup and fetish-y outfits unattractive.

As a person who has been involved with pageantry on a local level, I am outraged by these photos. What Trump is doing is dragging pageantry though the mud and the backlash will end up being that parents will not allow their daughters to be a part of the local and county pageants where their daughters learn the art of speaking in public, practice interviewing for positions, learn how to be comfortable when appearing before an audience, and develop the ability to think quickly their feet in pressure situations. Most of all, these pageants offer much needed scholarships to these young ladies. I resent that the good aspects of pageants held by directors who have high moral standards and care about making this a positive experience for these young ladies are being "trumped" and that all of pageantry is going to be given a black eye because of Mr. Trump's self-centered and exploitive decisions for his pageant.

Would The Donald have allowed his daughter to pose in sexy (borderline porno) bedroom photos and participate in an event like this that promotes sex? I will not allow my child to watch this as it is more degrading than ever of women.

This is just the 1980's coming around again where everyone wants to dress nice and look good. Hey, it could be a lot worse. All these girls could be covered in biker tats, have giant beer guts, and be dressed in the same dumpy - frumpy clothes we've seen women wearing for the last 15 years.
