A $12 Cup of Coffee!

By

(CBS)  How much would you pay for a cup of coffee? How about $12?!

Patrons at a small New York chain called Cafe Grumpy are getting an unexpected jolt from its new $12 cup - a price some six times higher than Starbucks fetches.

But this brew is like a fine glass of wine, according to the distributor of the beans, called Nekisse beans, which are grown, handpicked and coddled in Ethiopia.

The chains' Web site says the beans offer hints of apricot, pineapple, bergamot, kiwi and lime flavorings, and it describes the coffee as "very clean, sweet and complex."

And the $12 cup should only be taken black - aficionados say cream and sugar ruin the nuances.

Not to be outdone, there's a brew in Baltimore called "Aida's Grand Reserve." It goes for -- $13 a cup.

"The Early Show"'s co-anchors did their own taste test of Café Grumpy's blend Tuesday:

Hey the Wall Street bankers can afford it.
____________

Hey the wall street bakers ???.......Wall Street is a street in New York, where the stock exchange is located....the market of all public held companies around America.....Wall Street isn't a Bank.....what "Wall Street Bakers" are you referring to ?

Rich libs on Hollywood Blvd. you mean can afford this cup, after all their "board meetings" involve the beach, not real work.

There is a sucker born every minute! I stop buying Starbucks after the last time I spent almost $5.00 dollars for cup of coffee. I love coffee, but I anymore than $2.25 a cup I just drink water!

Starbuck's is outragous enough. Same with the mail spam from Africa with no return policy.
Real price of coffee if corious is about 15 cents with frills added per cup and beyond that it's a corporate donation to them.

Here is the deal: it's not about coffee, it's about being seen paying the $12! Being rich or being thought to be rich is what drives something like this.

It is really sad, actually unrealistic for someone even if they made 24 dollars an hour, not enought to pay for 2 cups (+tax) to buy into this fiasco.
I don't know many workers here in tennessee who would.
I won't even pay that much for a liter of crown.
I will stay with jim beam and folgers thank you.

Just a waste of money. Regular coffee is more than expensive enough, already. $4 a pound is quite expensive......really.

While I don't expect to get back to 10 cents a cup, ever again, we all know that the $1.50-$2. being charged in restaurants today, is very high profits.

Half the cost of coffee is liability insurance to pay for the "hot coffee in my lap" lawsuits.

Just saw your piece on that 12$ coffee. It?s gotta be more than what Maggie said. ALL coffee is hand picked and laid down before toasting, etc., etc. I know because we had a coffee farm in Costa Rica and that's just the way it is. Don't let them fool you into paying 12$ so easily.

First, what is it with New Yorkers? Something shows up in your backyard, so you naturally think you invented it. CNN already covered the $13 cup of coffee in Baltimore a month ago ( http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/04/07/specialty.quality.coffee/ ).

Second, so-called "idiots" pay big money for a lot of things -- not just coffee. Wine, cars, homes, Disney vacations, cable TV subscriptions, NFL tickets, children's dance lessons. One person's prized hobby is another person's idiocy. Get over it.
