Arizona Immigration Law Backlash Intensifies

A backlash against a new Arizona law cracking down on illegal immigration is broadening from the political to the sports and entertainment arenas with lawsuits filed, singers denouncing the measure and protesters gathering at an Arizona Diamondbacks baseball game.

A court suit from 15-year Tucson police veteran Martin Escobar was one of three filed Thursday, less than a week after Republican Gov. Jan Brewer signed the bill that critics claim is unconstitutional and fear will lead to racial profiling.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has said the federal government may challenge the law, which requires local and state law enforcement to question people about their immigration status if there's reason to suspect they're in the country illegally, and which makes it a state crime to be in the United States illegally.

Brewer and other backers say the state law is necessary amid the federal government's failure to secure the border and growing anxiety over crime related to illegal immigration.

CBS News correspondent Bill Whitaker reports 70 percent of Arizona residents say they're in favor of the law, according to a new poll.

"Mexican-Americans are not going to take this lying down," singer Linda Ronstadt, a Tucson native, said at a news conference on a lawsuit planned by the American Civil Liberties Union, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the National Immigration Law Center.

Colombian singer Shakira visited Phoenix to meet the city's police chief and mayor amid her concerns the measure would violate human and civil rights.

"It goes against all human dignity." she said.

At the Billboard Latin Music Awards ceremony in Puerto Rico, singer Ricky Martin denounced the law, too, saying it "makes no sense."

Arizona is already getting hit in the pocketbook, reports Whitaker. Cities across the country are threatening to boycott the state and eight conventions have decided to pull out of Phoenix - each could cost the city up to $45,000.

While divisive debate over the law swirled nationwide, Arizona lawmakers Thursday approved modifications to the law that requires local and state law enforcement to question people about their immigration status if there's reason to suspect they're in the country illegally, and makes it a state crime to be in the United States illegally.

The changes include strengthening restrictions against using race or ethnicity as the basis for questioning by police and specifying that possible violations of local civil ordinances can trigger questioning on immigration status.

The law's sponsor, Republican Sen. Russell Pearce, characterized those changes as clarifications "just to take away the silly arguments and the games, the dishonesty that's been played."

Some Latin nations also entered the debate.

In Mexico City, Mayor Marcelo Ebrard announced he would try to join lawsuits seeking to overturn the law, with a statement from his office calling the measure "a planned Apartheid against Mexicans."

And officials in El Salvador urged countrymen to avoid traveling to Arizona, according to the Foreign Ministry. In Nicaragua, officials called on the Organization of American States and the United Nations "to take the necessary measures to safeguard the rights of the Hispanic population."

The National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders also sued Thursday, and sought an injunction preventing authorities from enforcing the law. The group argued that federal law pre-empts state regulation of national borders, and that Arizona's law violates due process rights by letting police detain suspected illegal immigrants before they're convicted.

In filing his suit, Escobar, argued that there's no way for officers to confirm a person's immigration status without impeding investigations, and that the new law violates constitutional rights. Tucson police said Escobar acted on his own.

Separately, a Phoenix police officer filed a lawsuit arguing he'll be sued whether he enforces the law or not, either for violating civil rights or for refusing to enforce it.

At least three Arizona cities - Phoenix, Flagstaff and Tucson - are considering legal action to block the law.

About 40 immigrant rights activists gathered outside Wrigley Field in Chicago Thursday as the Cubs open a four-game series against the Diamondbacks. A small plane toting a banner criticizing the law circled the stadium. A Cubs spokesman declined to comment, while Arizona manager A.J. Hinch said the team was there to play baseball.

Politicians from around the country also weighed in. Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter said he would veto a new law like the one in Arizona, while Texas Republican Gov. Rick Perry said such a law would be wrong for his state because it has a tradition of rejecting harsh anti-immigrant policies.

Supporters of the new law also were vocal outside Arizona.

A group of conservative state lawmakers in Oklahoma said they plan to introduce a bill similar to Arizona's. In Texas, Rep. Debbie Riddle, a Republican, said she will introduce a measure similar to the Arizona law in the January legislative session. And Republicans running for governor in Colorado and Minnesota expressed support for the crackdown.

Question? Why aren't our poor USA citizens going to Mexico illegally to find jobs and a better life? Another question, why is the living conditions in Mexico so bad/poor? What are the wealthy Mexicans doing to help their poor sisters and brothers? Who is keeping all the money that could support the poor of Mexico? Why do we USA citizens need to suppor them--especially when they are illegal?

Has anyone wondered if they could enter Canada without a passport? Well, since I have been to Canada several times, I know, without any doubt, that you cannot. You would be arrested so quick and in jail you would not know what happened. They have all kinds of restrictions and I don't blame them. I have wondered for years how Mexicans and other people from all areas south of the Unites States of America have believed they can just steal into our country and not have any consequences. Who do they think they are anyway. Let them go to Washington D.C. and steal into our country under Obama's nose and let him deal with it. Wonder how Our Nations armed forces would deal with them. Well, I believe they would be on a quick plane back to their own country where they belong. I have absolutely no sympathy for any of them. Even those that have been in the United States for years. Many years ago illegals were given the chance to get a green card and stay here legally, but, at least half of them or more, decided not to do that for whatever reason. So hopefully if they get caught they will get deported with haste. Even Mexico does not let illegals into their country without legal papers. Mexicans especially think they can get away with any illegal act they want to commit no matter what it is. Their drug traffic is so out of control and their want of MONEY is go great, they have no qualms about how to get it, DRUGS, THEFT, MURDER OR ANY OTHER MEANS THEY MAY DO AND HAVE NO CONSCIENCE ABOUT IT. They also feel they should not have any consequences either. WE DEFINITELY SHOULD HAVE A VERY TIGHT BORDER CONTROL. WE SHOULD HAVE THE NATIONAL GUARD DOWN ON THE BORDER TO ENSURE THAT THE GROUP THAT WANTS TO COME INTO THE UNITED STATED OF AMERICA HAVE PROPER PAPERS OR PASSPORTS. BE LEGAL OR STAY IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY. I stand behind the Governor of Arizona all the way.

Very Sincerely

I feel that Arizona was right in protecting its citizens. If not their government, then who? People who pay taxes and follow the law should be afforded the states protection from people who are not in the US legally and are committing crimes against US Citizens.
People who are here legally and are obeying US laws, whether Mexican, Iraqi, Swedish or from anywhere have nothing to fear. People who are not here legally are therefore breaking US laws. If you are not a taxpaying, law abiding citizen, you should not be afforded the legal protection that is granted to taxpaying, law abiding US Citizens. Nor should you be granted access to all of the benefits that come with being a US Citizen. With these rights, come great responsibility. The 'new' law is not new, it is infact only a mirror of the federal law. AND it says NOTHING about MEXICANS. Caution! History shows that changing an entire system for 1 group is never a good idea.

They snuck into the US illegally and now they want to complain about it. If they would have followed our laws and come in through the front door just like millions of immigrants have done already, then they would be here legally and would be entitled to complain all they want.

That's what MOST American CITIZENS think. And MOST are sick and tired of it and starting to ACT on it. In November, they will act on it in a big unmistakable way, and in November 2012, only a fool will say most Americans don't want illegals deported. And fools get what they deserve.

AZ is an actual battleground with it's citizens in fear for their lives, with their well being and way of life being torn apart by the violence & public debt created by those illegally crossing the border to steal, to rape, to kill, to take jobs away from our citizens, to sell drugs, to cut in line, to sponge off of our valuable resources, to march in protest for not being idolized for being illegal, for marching in protest for not being paid for being illegal, for marching in protest for not receiving better benefits for being illegal, for not being thanked for burning our flag while flaunting being illegal, for not being rewarded for not learning english as an illegal, with all the foregoing being facilitated by the hopey feely lefties and our patethic worthless irresponsible govt that does not give a rat's rear-end for it's citizens, seeking only what in the near term benefits themselves the most and boasting that they are the do-gooders, that they are the intellectual elitists, when they are actually at best well intentioned communists, socialists, maoists, anarchists & elitist want-a-be's! We don't need no stinkin' maoists!
