Second Cup Cafe: Mary Chapin Carpenter

Mary Chapin Carpenter's career has been filled with golden moments.

After coming on the music scene in 1987, the singer/songwriter went on to become a five-time Grammy winner and score twelve Top 10 hits and four No. 1 singles.

This week, she released her twelfth album, "The Age of Miracles," which follows 2008's acclaimed Christmas release, "Come Darkness, Come Light" and 2007's Grammy-nominated album, "The Calling."

Carpenter teams with Vince Gill and Alison Krauss on her new album, which is currently No. 11 in iTunes Top Album Chart.

She stopped by the The Early Show on Saturday Morning"'s "Second Cup Cafe" to perform her new song, "The Way I Feel," from the album, along with her well-known hit "I Take My Chances."

For two decades, the talented singer has been performing and touring in the U.S. and abroad, but back in the spring of 2007, she had a health scare, which brought her career to a screeching halt.

Chapin Carpenter suffered from a pulmonary embolism, but has since recovered. This summer marks the first time she will return to the road and do what she loves best.

On April 27, the Americana Association honored Carpenter with the esteemed "Spirit of Americana" Free Speech in Music Award. The award recognizes artists who have used their work to raise awareness and promote free speech through their music and other efforts.

Past recipients include Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Joan Baez, Mavis Staples, Judy Collins, Charlie Daniels and Steve Earle.

Just downloaded the album and love it. She is a shining light in country music and keeps to her roots. I still listen to Emmylou Harris and Merle Haggard, and really miss Waylon (got to spend a day with him once, what a treat). And I'm even a hardcore liberal:)
