Did Earth's Water Come from Space?

The asteroid Vesta

The asteroid Vesta (NASA)

(Discover)  There are millions of asteroids in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, but yesterday attention focused on just one. According to a couple of studies in Nature, a large asteroid called 24 Themis is rife with water ice and organic molecules, and the researchers say that it could be more evidence that the water so precious to life on Earth came to our planet on board such rocks.

Two research teams took infrared images of 24 Themis, which is about 120 miles in diameter and was discovered in 1853. This asteroid has an extensive but thin frosty coating. It is likely replenished by an extensive reservoir of frozen water deep inside rock once thought to be dry and desolate.

The team, led by Humberto Campins, says finding so much ice on the surface was a surprise; at the asteroid's distance from the sun-3.2 astronomical units (AU), or just more than three times further than the Earth-exposed ice has a "relatively short lifetime," the scientists write. As a result, the idea of a below-surface reservoir seems likely. (Icy comets aren't nearly so close to the sun on average; Halley's comet can come within .6 AU of the sun, but then retreats to a farthest distance of more than 35 AU.)

It might seem implausible that our planet's water supply arrived incrementally as cargo on board comets or asteroids. But here's how it may have happened: More than four billion years ago, after a massive collision between Earth and another large object created the moon, our planet was completely dessicated. Then, during the Late Heavy Bombardment period that followed, during which lots of asteroids hit Earth, the ice that the objects carried became our store of water.

The bombardment period, which occurred nearly 4 billion years ago, was largely responsible for our moon's puckered appearance. A 2005 Nature study estimated that between 3 and 8 zettagrams of material slammed into the moon during that time (zetta means 10 to the 21st power, or a billion times a trillion), which implies that plenty of rocks slammed into the Earth, too.

Asteroids just keep getting more interesting. As we noted on Monday, the Japanese spacecraft that was the first to touch down on an asteroid is limping home to Earth, hoping to return its results to the home world by June. And President Obama's revised space exploration plan includes the idea for astronauts to visit an asteroid-a possibility that's all the more scientifically enticing if they were the bringers of our water.

To answer your questions:

A variety of independent geochronological measurements place the Earth's age at ~4.7 Billion years; ample time for terrestrial water to have accumulated via extraplanetary deposition.

"How come the moon doesn't have water then?"
The moon has no atmosphere to shield its surface from cosmic rays and solar radiation, both of which are known to be able to break molecular water into its constituent elements.

"And by the way, if man evolved from apes, why are there still apes?"
I'll try to answer this with an analogy, but without getting too deep into population genetics and speciation. Humans and apes share a common ancestor, much like many herding dogs share a common ancestor (Border Collies). At some point the population that led to humans became genetically separated from the rest of the common ancestor's population. Over time each went on a different evolutionary 'trajectory' because they were shaped by different environmental forces. Eventually they were unable to interbreed. Both have evolved since then, so the common ancestor needn't look like modern apes.

biogator, To be brief ,your explanation is load of baloney. There's no planet in our solar system with water, oxygen,to sustain any form of life. Why? If man descended from the ape why does he not have any fur or hair like any other monkey even though they live in warm climates? Why. Tough to explain isn't it. Thats why the number of scientists rethinking creation is growing.

The blatant displays of ignorance and outright stupidity in this comment section are frankly startling. I might blame the American school system for failing to place sufficient emphasis on science education. Unfortunately, the level of WILLFUL ignorance demonstrated here cannot be overcome by any amount of education.

rf35 - Cockahooy! Your kind thinks everyone should think and believe the way you do. You can't even comprehend billions and billions of years, but that is what the educated throw at evolution without facts. BILLIONS of 365's is not the answer to evolution. Until the educated can come up with something that is more comprehensible don't put people down for not believing your fairytale.

What a MINDLESS waste of energy writing this article.
WHERE else would water come from ??? WALMART ???
Hot sun, Cold space, hydrogen + oxygen
do the math
This is even dumber than steven hawkins last comment.

Seems most self proclaimed intelligent are atheists, believe in evolution, believe in aliens, and think we could be attacked by the little green men. But they refuse to believe in God who is very evident. Brilliant or fool?

Not quite there, TVO.

Evolution is butrussed by anthropology, archeology, geology, and microbiology.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Dream on former, evolution is just a very weak theory dreamt up by the likes of Darwin who btw got caught with a so called missing link that was just various bird bones glued together. Phoney science!
Creation is based on facts, such as that life cannot be made by the best of technology, not even a single cell!
Based on how you often you.re proven dead wrong (haiti missionaries)
I'd say your statements regarding christianity, have little or no credibility! Small wonder, you're an atheist.

OregonJames - Then why isn't this break-through news for evolution? I think this would be more newsworthy than the "chance" that water came from astroids.

Religion is "Not" for morons. It take brains to understand a religion.

I don't know what you mean by "brains" here, but you surely don't mean skepticism and reason.

Interesting, that during the "Age of Reason" ALL of the great minds were religious men who believed in a God. Later, even Darwin was religious and was conflicted with his findings. Not to mention it is a "theory" and how many "theories" have been re-written and disproved or at least held up for debate. More and more evidence is showing that religion and science go together and are not either one or the other. Nothing in nature is random chance and everything has, routine, is cyclical and has pattern. That aspect alone should cause atheists to scratch their heads BUT, they have their own religion of sorts. There are some very silly people and extremists on either end of any subject are whack-jobs who don't merit creditbility.

And by the way, if man evolved from apes, why are there still apes?

michaelm07 - I'm still waiting for their answer on which race is lower on the evolutionary scale. Some races have excelled and some have not. Has the brain not evolved? Evolution is so racist and discriminatory that it is uncomprehensible. But they wont admit that.

slow - When you declare that religion is fairy tales and then believe in evolution you are no different.

Religion is butrussed by squat.

They just found proof of Noah's Ark. They traced the registration number and it was true.

Look, evolution has all 4 of the entities you mentioned trying to put together a puzzle that does not exist. They have concocked a story that only sounds reasonable at first and have tried to sell their idea with the financial support of the government and failed miserably. They cannot produce life and they have absolutely no evidence of anything evolving into humans. They have nothing! It is all about believing in a fairytale that men and women with sheep skins on their wall tell to grown up babys that gawk at their silly findings as if they were finding God. When you have everything connected and it makes sense I might consider looking at it. I just don't believe the cockahooey scientist throw at us that has billions and billions of years tacked on. Anybody can do that!

If such could be proven as fact, the "separating the land from the seas" verse in Genisis I will lose what little credibility it had in the first place.....

Religion is "Not" for morons. It take brains to understand a religion. It takes understanding and faith to embrace Christianity, (Not religion) Morons confuse the two. (And it takes 'love' (not sex) to understand and benefit from 'Faith').
