Pistol-packing Texas Gov. Rick Perry has a message for wily coyotes out there: Don't mess with my dog.

Perry told The Associated Press on Tuesday he needed just one shot from the laser-sighted pistol he sometimes carries while jogging to take down a coyote that menaced his puppy during a February run near Austin.

Perry said he will carry his .380 Ruger - loaded with hollow-point bullets - when jogging on trails because he is afraid of snakes. He'd also seen coyotes in the undeveloped area.

When one came out of the brush toward his daughter's Labrador retriever, Perry charged.

"Don't attack my dog or you might get shot ... if you're a coyote," he said Tuesday.

Perry, a Republican running for a third full term against Democrat Bill White, is living in a private house in a hilly area southwest of downtown Austin while the Governor's Mansion is being repaired after a 2008 fire. A concealed handgun permit holder, Perry carries the pistol in a belt.

"I knew there were a lot of predators out there. You'll hear a pack of coyotes. People are losing small cats and dogs all the time out there in that community," Perry said.

"They're very wily creatures."

On this particular morning, Perry said, he was jogging without his security detail shortly after sunrise.

"I'm enjoying the run when something catches my eye and it's this coyote. I know he knows I'm there. He never looks at me, he is laser-locked on that dog," Perry said.

"I holler and the coyote stopped. I holler again. By this time I had taken my weapon out and charged it. It is now staring dead at me. Either me or the dog are in imminent danger. I did the appropriate thing and sent it to where coyotes go," he said.

Perry said the laser-pointer helped make a quick, clean kill.

"It was not in a lot of pain," he said. "It pretty much went down at that particular juncture."

Texas state law allows people to shoot coyotes that are threatening livestock or domestic animals. The dog was unharmed, Perry said.

Perry's security detail was not required to file a report about the governor discharging a weapon, said Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Tela Mange.

"People shoot coyotes all the time, snakes all the time," Mange said. "We don't write reports."

The governor left the coyote where it fell.

"He became mulch," Perry said.

this story is crap.. unless the coyotes are a lot more aggressive in texas, or it was rabid. In Nebraska coyotes are scared of ppl, they would keep their distance. They sneak onto farms at night to try to get small game, chickens, turkeys, ect. No way I believe this. If this happened it would be a freak occurance.

It doesn't take a geneous to figure out that running in "undeveloped areas" means you don't get to take your dog.
Oh I forgot, they don't have an environment in Texas....!#@?

I wonder if the coyote was already dead and he saw the press opportunity?

I know my posting is echoing many here but honestly, a .380 with HOLLOW POINTS FOR SNAKES?? I know everything's big in Texas but that's ridiculous. Just how big are the snakes he runs into - anaconda size?Excluding his than his fellow politicians of course.

I appreciate Perry protecting his pup - if anything or anyone tried to harm my dogs I'd go lethal myself. But as so many have said here, this story just doesn't add up. And his soundbites are too glib, too smug (I've worked with politicians, I know canned crap when I hear it) so this does indeed smack of the "Look at me, Look at me!" sydrome so many political types are afflicted with.

Perry isn't going to change his ways because of opinions posted here so all I can say is I hope his gun doesn't accidentally go off in his pants, leaving him with his own hollow point...

Here's an idea. If you are willing to even go jogging in an area with coyotes and you know dogs are prey, DON'T TAKE A DOG WITH YOU. He also says he needs the gun because of snakes? How fast do these snakes chase him. I am sorry, but this guy really needs to go find a new place to go running. It's just an excuse to shoot something. IMO.

Carries a .380 with hollow points for snakes? Do I look like I just got off the boat? BS, you carry a .380 with hollow points to 1) keep your weapon concealed, 2) use a surprise weapon on undesirables, 3) avoid shooting the person standing behind the undesirable with the very same bullet you fired at said undesirable. He's got my vote for pres.

Glad to hear he is doing something... what about our borders? I voted for him but am tired of Texas voices not being heard. Coyotes are some of the ugliest things ever created. May every liberal have on in their home.

Do any of you people condemning him actually live in coyote country? It's easy to sit back and drink your latte at your favorite wifi coffee shop and criticize when you don't have a clue. Ever lost a pet to coyotes? Or maybe some chickens? I have. Ever been confronted by a coyote? Did you chase him of with a stick or did you crap in your pants? Any coyote that doesn't run when he/she sees you or when you shout at it is a threat.
As far as his choice of weapon, this man receives death threats on a regular basis from idiots like you. Good choice of weapon and ammo.

Do any of you people condemning him actually live in coyote country? Ever lost any pets or livestock to coyotes? Ever been confronted by a coyote that wouldn't back down? Did you chase it away with a stick or did you crap in your pants? If a coyote doesn't run when he sees you or when you yell and grab a stick or a rock, it's a threat. He did the proper thing. It's easy to sit back and criticize while sipping your latte in the safety of your favorite wifi coffee shop when you don't have a clue and you're really only criticizing him because he's a Republican and no other reason.
As far as his choice of weapon, there's cougars out there too and the man receives death threats on a regular basis from idiots like you. If you don't have a clue about what it's like to live with wildlife, stop making inane arguments. Personally, I grab something a bit larger when I'm going out to confront predators on my property.

Yes, I do. If you don't protect yourself and your pets, well you and your pets become prey. Coyotes are not the ones depicted in the Roadrunner cartoons.

What is a governor of Texas doing with a dog that can't take a coyote? A coyote is one of the most cowardly creatures on the face of the earth. Thank goodness the governor was there to protect the lab, but I don't think it's going to help the lab gene pool any. It certainly did nothing for the governor gene pool.

Whose gene pool is to blame for you missing the word "puppy"? A mastiff puppy wouldn't be able to fend off a hungry adult coyote.

No dog can take a coyote. Perry protected his own. Look up a coyote on the internet, then you may know what your talking about. Unless you suggest he gets a pit bull, one that would turn on his family in a heartbeat, just like OB has done to the USA.
