Lingerie Ads Nixed Due to Plus-Sized Model?

A plus-sized controversy is flaring over the initial refusal by ABC and Fox to run an ad for lingerie from Lane Bryant, the maker of clothes for plus-sized women.

The ad features plus-sized model Ashley Graham.

At first, ABC wouldn't air it on "Dancing with the Stars," and Fox refused to show it on "American Idol."

Now, both are apparently going to broadcast it -- but only during the later portions of the shows, outside the time considered too early to run racy material.

Charges, counter-charges and denials have been flying in all directions, with Lane Bryant claiming that a double standard is being applied, since commercials for Victoria's Secret (featuring thinner models in similarly skimpy attire) do run in earlier time slots.

On "The Early Show on Saturday Morning," Graham said it all smacks of discrimination against plus-sized women.

"It's actually sad" that the Lane Bryant ads will run, but not until the so-called Family Hour is over, she told co-anchor Chris Wragge. "I know there's plenty of women my size watching 'American Idol,' watching 'Dancing with the Stars' who would love to see what they look like on the television screen. And I feel bad for the plus-women out there who can't see that, and that has to be, like, part of a discrimination."

Graham observed that, "Victoria's Secret commercials are airing all throughout the day, but when it comes to a Lane Bryant commercial, we have a little bit of extra, you know, overflowing, and then everybody freaks out."

Does she think it was because "there's too much of you?" Wragge asked.

"I think so," Graham replied.

Wragge wondered if the content of the ad, in which Ashley is seen scheduling a rendezvous with "Dan," might have been inappropriate: "You're texting your boyfriend in your underwear. Do you think maybe there was a more underlying message that they wanted to stay away from?"

"I don't think so," Graham responded, "considering that the Victoria's Secret models flaunt around and dance around wearing basically nothing, and then for me just to be getting ready to go see my boyfriend in my lingerie, I don't see much difference between the two stories."

Graham said it never entered her mind her ad would cause such a dustup.

"Oh, my goodness!," she exclaimed. "I was so honored to be part of the commercial, to represent women of my size, that we can be confident and sexy in our lingerie, and to have it on television."

The flap over the ad is "actually hilarious to me, considering all the press that plus girls have been getting lately. We've been naked in all different kinds of magazines. I'm naked in Oprah magazine this month. And this is a much bigger story than that?. It's very shocking to me."

Could it be Lane Bryant knew what would transpire and did the ad for the attention?

"It's great for Lane Bryant," Graham says. "I don't think they were using me, per se, to make it a publicity stunt, but I think that this is great for them. But I don't think there was a publicity stunt."

So no ulterior motive on Lane Bryant's part?

"I have no idea," Graham answered. "I haven't actually asked that."

ABC released this statement about Lane Bryant:

"Their statements are not true. The ad was accepted to run in "Dancing With the Stars." Lane Bryant was treated absolutely no differently than any advertiser for the same product. We were willing to accommodate them, but they chose to seek publicity instead."

Fox Entertainment released this statement

"Lane Bryant submitted the lingerie ad for the 8 PM hour of "American Idol." Because the 8 p.m. hour is considered "family hour," we requested they make some edits. Lane Bryant refused and they didn't want to change the ad. We did agree to run the ad on the 9PM hour. Fox has scheduled to run the ad this Wednesday, April 28th during the 9 p.m. hour."

Lane Bryant released this news release:

Lane Bryant released a memorandum from ABC, Inc. rejecting its Cacique ad from a number of programs including Dancing With The Stars.

The memo dated April 9, 2010 said, "UPON APPROVAL, THIS COMMERCIAL IS RESTRICTED FROM THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMMING/TIME PERIODS (ET): Post 9 PM: Extreme Makeover, Home Edition and Wipeout, Animated Wonderful World of Disney, Wonderful World of Disney, Dancing With the Stars, America's Funniest Videos, Game Shows."

"ABC's statement that 'Lane Bryant was treated absolutely no differently than any advertiser for the same product' is simply not true. It was only after we got the rejection and raised the fact that they were operating under a double standard that they reluctantly agreed to put us in the last pod of the program. The Victoria Secret ads, which had aired on Dancing With The Stars prior to the date our ad was rejected were not subject to the same restrictions. We have records of their ads airing in earlier time slots," a Lane Bryant spokesman said.

"There was absolutely no rationale for us to be relegated to the back of the bus, when our ads were no more risqu? than those of Victoria Secret. The only difference is the size of our models. We would have expected better from a company owned by Disney," the spokesman for Lane Bryant added.

Plus size or thin, the ads should not be on TV. Money says it all for these girls?

She looks healthy at this point in life. This sort of stuff always makes me wonder how much "matter" is upstairs and also in the heart. And, I do not think each mammary in her case qualifies for its own time zone.

The only thing "plus" about Miss Graham are her assets. When I think of "bigger women", she does not come to mind. Anymore. Thanks for that. We all know skinny women ain't hip.

Really, I am plus size. I have a thyroid condition. I take medicine for my condition. I eat a balanced diet. However this model is not a plus sized model. How many of you plus size women really look like this. She maybe a size 10 at the most. There is nothing wrong with the way this woman looks. She looks healthy, not anorexic. If Lane Bryant wants a plus size model get a plus size model. I have complained to them numerous times about getting realistic plus size models. I would rather see one of these ads than an erectile dysfunction commercial when I am watching tv with my 3 children. Good Luck to Lane Bryant and all the people who support them.

I don't think it's a good idea show overweight people in lingerie ads. Showing thin to "average" models could help motivate overweight people to lose weight. This will improve their health as well as their appearance and when they realize how much better they look, their confidence will balloon in inverse proportion to their size.

I was hoping you were being sarcastic, but the media already inundates "women" with images of women who don't cross the size 0 line. This causes girls who are in a 3+ to constantly question their own "extra weight", even though in reality they look fine. From the time I was 14 and started showing signs of puberty, I always felt "fat". Throughout High School I weighed 95-105 pounds on a 5' 4" frame. I was on a "diet" to get down to 85-90 pounds (I was pursuing an acting career and was told to lose some "baby fat", the camera adds 10 pounds!)

In short, eventhough I am in my 40's now, and wearing a respectable size 6, my confidence never ballooned when I would make a goal weight, I would always want to lose 5 more or 10 more pounds. I am a confident and outgoing person, but I have body issues, and I am hyper self concious of my weight. Losing weight doesn't make people happy, just like money doens't make people happy. Losing/fixing the problems that cause someone to gain weight, THAT makes a person happy.

I full figured gal is much more fun, and has a nicer attitude. Plus they are willing to be held, and are more willing to share or return a pleasure. Weight is not an issue, if you compare models, one with curves and handles, and a nice FRONT END, and TRUNK will be more fun than some little light weight breakable models.

This is really stupid. We can have thin girls that have on next to nothing yet we can't have a plus size girl in lingerie. That goes to show you that our life is trying to be projected that thin is the only way in life. I love girls that are plus size. Why can't we have real women on t.v. that show what is real and what is not. That is a shame.

I call on CBS news to run these ads to make up for others who won't. Just think of all of those weird drug advertisements we could replace. As an added bonus they could make the next commercials focus on thongs.

I can not believe the gentlemen below called them "puppies" The more appropriate terms are "Head Lights!" or "Mellons!"

Been called sweater puppies for a very long time.

I love that term. Who says you can't learn anything on the internet? I learned more from this article than 16 years of public education.

PUPPIES, yes, a WWE term for the goods up front. :) LOVE IT....I prefer RACK myself. Yet, the correct term is BOOBIES....or mammalian protuberances as coined by Frank Zappa.

Could the "plus sized" model actually be so naive that she believes her own statements "I know there's plenty of women my size watching 'American Idol,' watching 'Dancing with the Stars' who would love to see what they look like on the television screen...etc "Oh, my goodness!," she exclaimed. "I was so honored to be part of the commercial, to represent women of my size, that we can be confident and sexy in our lingerie, and to have it on television."
NEWS FLASH!! Victory Secret Commericials are not "aimed" at women! Men are drooling over these ads...when their significant others see their reaction....they take a trip to VS and spend spend spend...to get the same reaction...very sad...and men spend a lot of money at VS on purchases too...so maybe the same will happen now at Lane Bryant??

and you are...rosanne...barr...yup - lolol pst...NEWSFLASH!! women like VS too - it's not just for 'drooling men' some women like to dress in a manner that makes them feel sexy for their husbands, themselves for confidence (or perhaps their significant for that matter)There's nothing wrong with a plus sized model's statement - you are an imbicile of no self confidence to ask if she could be 'so niave' to believe her own statement...and btw, VS is AWESOME - you don't like it, don't purchase it - it's pretty simple

WOW, writer10...very defensive...if you actually read my post you would see I made no comment on the quality of VS products. They have wonderful lingerie. But I have never been motivated to shop there because of their ads. I was commenting on the the ads alone and the naive model who thought she could make a difference in the confidence of some women by appearing in lingerie in a commercial...they ads are aimed at men whether you want to believe it or not. Lets do a little informal survey right here, ladies and gentlemen...do you think VS ads are made with women in mind? Or aimed at men?
