Thousands Protest Ariz. Immigration Law
Some 2,000 people have protested in Phoenix against a tough immigration enforcement measure signed into law today by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer.
Demonstrators say the bill, which makes it a crime under state law to be in the country illegally, will lead to civil rights abuses. The law also requires police officers to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are illegal immigrants.
Boos erupted at the Capitol from the crowd when it was announced that the governor had opted to sign the legislation despite their protest and President Obama's criticism of the measure.
Demonstrators have protested the legislation since it was approved by lawmakers Monday. Their numbers have steadily grown throughout the week, with buses bringing in people from as far away as Los Angeles.
In Mexico, a pro-migrant activist called the measure "racist."
Francisco Loureiro, who runs a Nogales migrant shelter, says in Arizona, "there is already a hunt for migrants and now it will be open season under the cover of a law."
Mexico has slammed the measure, saying it could strain cross-border relations and result in rights violations and racial profiling. On Thursday, Mexico's Senate unanimously passed a resolution urging Gov. Jan Brewer to veto it.
The legislation requires police to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are illegal immigrants.
The bill's Republican sponsor, State Rep. Russell Pearce of Mesa, says it will remove "political handcuffs" from police and help drive illegal immigrants from the state.

I would like to say that I agree with that. The PERSON is not illegal, the PERSON has committed an illegal act, breaking a federal law of the country they so desperately want to be in.
So, we should quit calling them 'illegal' and maintain the same term we apply to anyone else who breaks the law - a CRIMINAL.
So a CRIMINAL enters the country illegally, a CRIMINAL does not pay income tax (a LOT of those are in jail, no matter thier race), a CRIMINAL drives without a license - and in Texas, insurance, and a CRIMINAL is what we should call them.
It does not matter the color of your skin or the language you speak - you are walking into MY home and then demanding that I accomodate you. Come in the right way, get treated right. Come in the wrong way, and expect the boot !
Over 3 million illegals were given citizenship in 1986. Now we have another 11- 15 million illegals. We got no issues with legal immigration; we take in millions, by far more than any other country in the world. No my friend, America is a hero, a nation that bends over backward to assist people. Also what about the issue of fairness to other people who also want to come to America? Why should they obey the laws of the country, wait their turns and play according to the rules, yet others in the millions break the laws and refuse to play according to the rules? Fairness should be a two way street.
What's with all this hyphenated crap, anyway? Mexican-American, African-American, European-American, Chinese-American? Seriously? What happened to being an American? Do we need to start introducing ourselves this way? "Hi my name is Jane Doe, and I'm a French-American," "Oh hi there, nice to meet you, my name is Joe Blow, and I'm a German/Irish/Spanish American. Oh, and I visited Canada once for about a month."
Are we forgetting that nobody's ancestors came from America? (Yes, even the Native-Americans...ugh with the hyphens again...originated from somewhere else.)
Are we going to continue to divide ourselves, as Americans, this way? What is the point of having a United States of America if we're all going to be divided up by country of origin, anyway?
United we stand, divided we fall. I'll say it again: this is not about race, my friends and fellow Americans, it is about upholding the laws of the nation that were put in place to protect the nation. Can you really not see what would happen to this nation if it decided that it no longer needs to protect it's borders and enforce it's immigration laws? Do we really stil believe the world is made of pink fluffy kittens and that safety and opportunity are without cost and responsibility?
Shall we just stop enforcing laws altogether? Ahh why not, let all of the murders and rapists loose from prison since we're not enforcing laws anymore (because it's unconstitutional, of course.) Oh, no, I know, I know! Let's make it illegal to be white... then we can lock up all of the evil, bigoted, oppressive white people, and let everyone else roam free in the newly liberated Divisions of the United States! Meanwhile, I'll be moving to Mexico, where they learned how not to run a nation by watching the fall of the recently "liberated" Divisions of the United States.
