Sarah Palin Wants "Consequences" for Hacker

Updated at 2:47 p.m. ET

Sarah Palin testified Friday against a 22-year-old man accused of hacking into her e-mail account, saying later it's up to the judge to decide whether he should serve prison time if convicted.

Palin testified that the hacking compromised one of the main ways she communicated with her family back in Alaska as she campaigned in 2008 as the Republican vice presidential candidate. Outside the courthouse, when asked whether she thought community service was punishment enough rather than prison, she said, "That's up to the judge."

Former University of Tennessee student David Kernell faces up to 50 years in federal prison if convicted of identity theft, mail fraud and two other felony charges. His lawyer has called the case a prank, not a crime.

Asked outside court if she thought the charges against Kernell were excessive, Palin said, "I don't know, but I do think there should be consequences for bad behavior."

Palin told jurors she was in Michigan campaigning when she first learned from a news report that her e-mail account had been hacked. A few minutes later, her campaign manager and a Secret Service agent told her the report was true, she testified.

The former Alaska governor testified that she used the "gov.palin" Yahoo! account and a Blackberry for almost all communication with her family during the 2008 campaign.

Palin told jurors that she only returned to her home in Wasilla, Alaska, once during the campaign to speak at the ceremony when her son deployed with his Army unit to Iraq.

Palin's husband, Todd, listened as she testified. Their daughter Bristol testified earlier this week that she got harassing calls and text messages after screen shots of e-mail from the account revealed her cell phone number.

A former Palin aide also described receiving vulgar e-mails.

Kernell isn't accused of the harassment. But prosecutors say he improperly gained access to Palin's e-mail account in September 2008 by correctly providing her birth date and ZIP code and correctly answering that Wasilla is where she met her husband.

The intrusion occurred after news reports revealed that Palin had used the private account to discuss some state business with staff.

I don't care which political side your own, just pretend it was your account. I would kick his arse! Giving out a kid's phone number to receive threats and hate mail. I hope he has to do some time so he can be hacked into by his cellmate! Cellmate make sure you take pictures and post them on the internet for all to see!

I think Sarah Palin just wants to get more attention and to blame that kid of getting into her mail but she should have closed out her account and changed her mail box. The kid should not get 50 years that is to much. She needs to go home and stop trying to get so much attention. She should have known about this stuff before now. She is using this to get more attention. Dont vote for her as president. She could not handle the world. She can not handle this little problem so how would she run the country.Dont give the kid 50 years.

It wasn't very bright to use Yahoo for State business, since it is not secure.

Sarah's pregnant daughter receives threatning phone calls, and A former Palin aide described receiving vulgar e-mails. This is what "insiting violence" looks like.

After an embarrassing letter surfaced while I was a tennager, I was told not to write anything that I did not want to see published in the San Jose Mercury News. Good ADVICE. Given the nature of the internet, computers and people's curiosity, I am surprised anyone would write detrimental or embarrassing statements in what is almost a public forum. Copy to mistakes can happen. Staff leaves an account up and running on the terminal, etc. Critical communications should be paswword controlled and encrypted and on a secure system. Would this young man be sentenced to 50 years if he fould or stole a sheaf of letters and policy statements and shared them with the press? I think not.

Surely Ms Palin can see this was an 19 year old boys pranks at the time. He never made the threats or nothing. he just got the password. 50 years is a little steep for this college kid and surely she would recognize this herself.

Yes, what the hacker did was wrong, but was it worse than taking someone's life?

This is what palin law looks like - fire anybody that says the word "retarded", give the kid 50 years for hacking "her" account, abstinence for all but, of course, not her daughters, hiding birth certificates - but everybody else should show them, etc. geez what a hypocrite. Did this kid get rich hacking her account? Maybe he will get rich when he goes public with some of the juicy palin facts and writes a book in prison.

?David Kernall is on trial for identity theft, wire fraud, intentionally accessing Palin's e-mail account without authorization and obstructing an FBI investigation. If convicted, he could be sent to prison for up to 50 years.? Even though I?m not a fan of Sarah Palin, but I?m convinced a ?punk turned into thug? as this evil man ? a.k.a. David Kernall has no reason to function in a productive society. Once the law convicts him, lock him up for 50 years should be just a minimum!
