Pepper Pad spices up handhelds

What is the Pepper Pad? It's not a laptop, and it's not a PDA. The company markets it as a handheld media computer; we say it's like the Nokia 770 on steroids. The handheld measures 12.1 by 6.6 by 0.8 inches and weighs 2.3 pounds, so obviously, it's not meant to be an on-the-go device. It's more of a gadget for the living room, the kitchen, or the bedroom. With integrated Bluetooth 1.2 and Wi-Fi, you can use it to surf the Web, or if you're seeking some tunes or eye candy, the Pepper Pad can also play MP3s, WMAs, AACs, MPEG-4s, AVIs, and more. You can also check e-mail (POP3 and IMAP4 accounts), instant-message, and read e-books. The Linux-based handheld is powered by a 624MHz Intel XScale processor and features a QWERTY keyboard split by an 8.4-inch SVGA LCD. The Pepper Pad costs $849.99 and is available now.

The company has also announced the Pepper Pad Plus, which will be available in Q2 2006 (no pricing has been set yet). Enhancements include integrated VoIP, Bluetooth 2.0, better battery life (4 hours vs. 2.5 hours), and support for 802.11g.
