"One Shining Moment" 2010 Revamp Draws Criticism

For Duke University's men's basketball team, the playing of "One Shining Moment" meant they had just won their fourth NCAA championship. For Jennifer Hudson, it meant an onslaught of criticism over her rendition of the song.

The "American Idol" alumna recorded a rendition of the song, which is traditionally played along with a montage of tournament moments after the final game. But her version, and the montage played with it, didn't sit well with fans.

If "One Shining Moment" is searched on Twitter, a lengthy list of users who have discussed Hudson's version appear.

One commenter on Twitter called Hudson's version "horrendous," while another said she "ruined 'One Shining Moment' for all the basketball players and fans."

On YouTube, commenters also expressed their distaste for Hudson's rendition of the song, which has also been recorded by Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass and David Barrett.

"I was disappointed when I finally saw the 'new' version of 'One Shining Moment,'" one YouTube commenter wrote. "It did not seem to have the same momentum as previous arrangements."

Another called the new version "horrible."

"CBS just wanted to put a modern face on this beautiful song," that commenter continued. "What they did was put a horrible rendition on this classic song."

Others took issue with Hudson's presence in the montage of tournament moments that was played along with the song.

One Twitter user wrote of the montage, "We don't need shots of Jennifer Hudson. Why do you have to ruin One Shining Moment? How is that even possible?"

Another denounced the singer's presence, saying the montage was "not a music video."

A YouTube commenter agreed, writing, "Why are there clips of her singing? Ruined one of the big moments of the tournament."

The Sporting Blog summed it up simply, writing on their Twitter account, "That was not my 'One Shining Moment.'"

Are we Serious right now, we are criticizing a song. we americans say that we live for change and change is good, you obviously said that because that was part of obama's slogan and he's now our president. But besides that its a change, cbs obviously thought it was time for a change we change it many times before three different guys and now a woman singing it it sounds horrible please grow up. change is great. and besides that Jennifer Hudson Sounds a mazing singing it a YOU GO GIRL ROCK ON!

It seems to be a "guy's" song....not a woman's song...I like the previous versions. If you wanted to have a man sing it and updated it because the other two are deceased there are a host of names you could choose -- Anthony Hamilton, Reuben Stoddard, Tevin Campbell...and she didn't need to be intercut with the video montage. Totally unnecessary.

But I'll say one thing: whoever her manager is, he's got pull.

Every time CBS brings out a new version of this song it gets trashed. Over time though people get used to it and I think fans will generally come around to this version. But there are big differences that CBS needs to consider before next year.

First, this is not a music video. We look forward to these three minutes for the tournament highlights and maybe to see our team but we aren't watching it to see Jennifer Hudson. And, somehow Ms. Hudson's little vocal riff during the bridge just doesn't have the appropriate energy the guitar solos had in all previous renditions.

One other idea, Barrett's original version had a prelude called Golden Street that CBS used as they rolled credits and showed the winning team cutting down the nets. Bring that back too.

I've watched one shining moment every year since 1987. This was hands down the worst rendition. I turned it off after 30 seconds. I'd feel cheated if I was a Duke fan.

Thank you CBS for generating absolute anger over the awful "creative" song by Jennifer Hudson and ask why the hell was she ever pictured during the video montage? She didn't play the game!!!

It is about the players, coaches, cheerleaders, and the excitement of the tournament, NOT about her cackling creativity of the song. She did not deserve to be featured at ANY time in the video, especially showing her singing instead of the opening tip!

The video is the most stirring recap of any sports season and you ruined it. Bring back the Luther Vandross version and fire Harvey Mason, Jr and the idiots that approved the change to this timeless sports classic!

You have officially RUINED one of the best parts of March Madness with the new HORRIBLE version of One Shining Moment by Jennifer Hudson.

If I wanted to watch a Jennifer Hudson music video, I would turn to MTV or VH1 or BET!

PLEASE bring back the Luther Vandross OR the Teddy Pendergrass version. Both are miles better than this mess.

It has been, what 10 years, and CBS STILL can't figure out how to (1) switch between games or (2) schedule games so they don't all end at the same time (hint - try 15-30 mins apart instead of 5-10 minutes).

But the one thing you always nail is the montage at the end. I like it so much that despite being a huge basketball fan frustrated with how the game coverage annually gets butchered, I think twice about my desire for a real sports network to pick up the tournament.

But then you come up with that version of one shining moment...and you even blow that? who thought it would be a good idea to show Jennifer Hudson throughout the highlights? I'll admit I like Teddy and Luther's versions better, but that isn't the biggest issue. If you want to "make it young" - whatever that means - fine. have timberlake sing it for all i care. But don't destroy the video/product in the process. It was a terrible music video, even if you liked the version of the song.

And by the way - the people that are still awake and watching your broadcast 45mins after the game is over - arent sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for you to change the singer to jennifer hudson, even if there are youmg.

that was really bad. you should produce a new one. it's not fair to the kids in this great tournament that work for free and make you money to pay for jennifer hudson.

If you really want to get young? Send Jim Nantz out to the Masters a week early and get someone in the seat that can pronounce the names correctly and actually understands what the officials are doing. Kellogg replacing Packer was necessary for a long time - thank you for that.

Who's the marketing genius at CBS who had the brilliant idea to ruin One Shining Moment by letting Jennifer Hudson sing it? Do they have any idea who their target audience is? Do they think a single person watching the end of that game has ever purchased one of her albums? Or gives a damn about any song she's ever sung? Or wouldn't turn the radio in a heartbeat if she came on? Way to ruin one of the coolest moments of the year, CBS.

Hey! NBC should do the same thing with their traditions, like "It?s a Wonderful Life" on Christmas Eve! It?s a time-honored tradition?you know, something nobody would just defile for no reason.

Well what if this Christmas, instead of playing the regular "It?s a Wonderful Life," NBC decided, hey you know what, let?s have F-list reality TV host Ty Pennington dub over all of Jimmy Stewart?s lines. The rest of the soundtrack and characters will be the same, but we need that fresh Ty Pennington sound to modernize, really perfect "It?s a Wonderful Life." Better yet, at key points in the plot we ought to cut away from the film and show video footage of Ty himself actually recording the dialog in the studio. This way, when Harry Bailey says something like, ?Zuzu?s petals!? instead of seeing old black-and-white Jimmy Stewart with an astonished look on his face (boring!) the audience will see Ty Pennington, in full color, right up close, saying these words into a microphone in a sound stage.
