FTN: Approval Down, Obama "In a Pickle"

By
David Riedel
(CBS)  After passing health care reform and signing the bill into law, President Barack Obama has suffered a drop in approval in the past week. A CBS News poll shows that Mr. Obama's approval rating has dropped to 44 percent. Before health care passed, Mr. Obama's approval was at 49 percent.

The new number is Mr. Obama's lowest yet.

Georgetown University professor Michael Eric Dyson told "Face the Nation" anchor Bob Schieffer that Mr. Obama is "in a pickle."

Dyson said that Mr. Obama "has to recognize he's governing all of America, has to give in and make concessions […] and head toward the middle as he's done after winning a perceived left victory [in health care]."

He added, "The reality is [Mr. Obama]'s trying to balance it out. He doesn't want to give in to the 'Tea Party,' but he sees legitimate points and anger and has to govern according to a vision for which he was called to office which is to say reform health care and student loans.

"He had a heck of a week when you look at it in real terms - the guy had a great week - and [he's] suffering, polls declining. It's a give-and-take, and some of us leaning to the left wish he might make more grand overtures, but he's trying to govern through the middle."

The question of whether or not Mr. Obama now has the power to get anything done in Washington has been lingering all week, especially since the news of the drop in approval rating.

CBS News Congressional correspondent Nancy Cordes says that while Republicans may be loath to "help" Mr. Obama politically by backing parts of his agenda - and are emboldened by the latest polls - Democrats think financial regulatory reform may be another winner for them.

Cordes said the issue is a challenge for the GOP: "They're kind of in a bind because on one hand they have serious issues with the Democrats' plan working through the Senate right now, but on the other hand they don't want to come across as the the partners of the Wall Street fat cat.

"In the end they think the legislation will pass," Cordes said. "Democrats are feeling good about that because they feel they will get Republican votes in the House - they think they could pick up several dozen votes in the House - and Republicans tell us that's probably on-target."

Sunday's New York Times and Washington Post also had stories about Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens and his decision to retire sometime during Mr. Obama's presidency.

Another guest on "Face the Nation" was CBS News Chief legal correspondent Jan Crawford, who told Schieffer that the White House is ready for a confirmation battle, and would prefer to have it sooner rather than later - before their Senate alliances weaken.

"[J]ustices don't like to retire during an election season. They don't want to inject the court into politics," Crawford said.

"The White House is ready for this. Remember, they went through this last year when they replaced Justice Souter and have a good working short list. They looked at these nominees. They've got a pretty good working short list. If they want a fight now's the time to have it. They've got a solid majority in the Senate. They're going to lose, probably, four to six votes in the upcoming midterm. So if they want a fight, now's the time to have it."

She listed nominees that she thought could get through the approval process without a major fight.

"Elena Kagan, former dean of Harvard Law School," said Crawford. "She's the current solicitor general. She represents the United States in the Supreme Court. She's very qualified. And some conservatives really like her. She hired a lot of conservatives at Harvard Law School."

Also, "You've got Merrick Garland, a judge here on the D.C. Circuit, considered a moderate on some criminal issues. He would be a very, I think, easy confirmation for the White House. But there are a lot of voices for another woman, and that points us to Judge Diane Wood on the Chicago Federal Appeals Court. She would probably be the biggest fight, because, out there in the heartland, that's where you get a lot of those controversial abortion cases, and so she's sat on a few of those."

Another name that came up is Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), who Crawford thought was an intriguing possibility, but a difficult choice politically.

"She's a really impressive person," said Crawford. "She's got prosecutorial experience, and people are always clamoring for someone off the judicial monastery. This court's got all former federal appeals court judges.

"But she is a Democrat from a state with a Republican governor [Tim Pawlenty], and so if you're thinking politically about who you're going to put on the court, and certainly Obama did last time with Sonia Sotomayor, [Klobuchar]'s not the one you."

Pawlenty could appoint a Republican to fill Klobuchar's vacant Senate seat, said Crawford, and the White House wouldn't want that.

For those of you who are still clueless about the current economic crisis and STILL claim "it's Bush's Fault", educate yourself:
Remember the day...
January 3rd, 2007 was the day the Democrats took over the Senate and the Congress:

At the time:
The DOW Jones closed at 12,621.77
The GDP for the previous quarter was 3.5%
The Unemployment rate was 4.6%
George Bush's Economic policies SET A RECORD of 52 STRAIGHT MONTHS of JOB CREATION!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow...So you mean that democrats senate and congress created that 6 trillion national debt too..... and 2 wars..
Country was on the way to disaster. Economies does not collapse in a year but it was on the way towards it.
Since you have listed this data of achievement by Bush, can you LIST and EXPLAIN, how this democratic congress and senate brought this country down to its knees without the help of the Bush administration, in a year to a point where Bush had to pump 700 billion into economy to save it from disaster that was caused by democrats.....Explain what decisions by dirty democratic senate and congress, lead this country to the present disaster..
We started the war in Afghanistan to kill Al queada, and suddenly we changed the course to find WMD in Iraq and still spending billions there, again is it democrats ...I am confused by your theory....
I also supported the past administration, but I do not think as republican or democrat, think independently and judge, in order to move forward to bring back this precious nation, NOT the damn old parties. If this nation goes down we all go down with it.

We love President Obama. We are so gd happy with him and the great job he is doing. We knew the rich and big corps, banks would be using big bucks to smear and trash him as he goes after the bucks bush gave them and the rest of us need back!!!! There is so much misinformation and lies spread by big money - but no surprise there. They're gonna take a hit and it is fun to watch. Oh and by the way stop the lies calling health care a big entitlement program. It saves money over a decade - straight from the CBO.

What are you smoking? The CBO is a government office with the same rose colored glasses as Washington. The health care plan will turn out just like Medicare only more expensive. Ask the prople of Massasusetts how there state health plan is working. Love your leftist, socialist Pres. he wants to spread the wealth. By the way, the same big money businesses and banks take care of the Democrates and Obama just as much as the Republicans. It irks me to believe there are people you that believe everything they hear.
by retm-w April 6, 2010 5:15 PM EDT
And the CBO said insurance rates will rise, they also said you can't take $500 million out of Medicare and use it as a savings and turn around and use it to pay for the health reform bill.

Obama is in a pickle, just ask yourself this, in the middle of a recession, why is Obama growing government and pushing through the biggest entitlement program in your lifetime?

I noticed it is getting harder and harder for Obozobots to defend Obozo. There are more against Obozo than ever before and didn't Obozo just do something that was supposed to be great? It shows you that America is not fooled by the Circus in Washington.

typical discussion with today's angry 'conservative'...

tea partier (TP): obama is a commy, a terrorist bent on destroying america!

myself (ME): and what makes you say this?

TP: err...he wants to create death panels and to bankrupt america..yeahh! he's a socialist!

ME: do you realize the massive deficits were inherited from bush's final years, and the bank bailout was supported by many in the gop, including bush? bush pushed through a huge tax cut for wealthy americans without paying for it through other cuts, not to mention the wars. the death panels rumor has no basis as it has been refuted by numerous fact-checking sources.

TP: um, so what! obama's gonna spend a trillion for healthcare welfare...he's a socialist Hitler! this bill is a govt takeover of healthcare! commy!!!

ME: do you know that the govt already is involved in huge portions of healthcare spending through Medicaid and Medicare? the healthcare bill did not include a public option, which had liberal support.

TP: this healthcare bill is the devil! obama is a marxist pig! he pushed this bill down our throats. he breaks every promise he makes and, and no transparency and...and backroom deals, and obamacare is an obamanation! yeah!

ME: um, okay...the debate did go on for nearly a year. the senate bill has been posted for months for every citizen to read. the house fixes bill eliminated the favors such as the one with Ben Nelson of Nebraska. Obama campaigned on healthcare reform, on making it affordable for millions of americans who can't afford it now. He also campaigned on more financial regulation, on eliminating the billions paid to private banks for student loans to create more money to help kids afford college, on investing in green energies and conservation. He has already accomplished many of these and is working on the others.

TP: forcing americans to buy health insurance is un-american! treason!

ME: but the gop proposed this idea when clinton was trying to pass his healthcare reform. mitt romney, a leading gop candidate for the next prez election, called it a conservative idea when he passed mandatory healthcare in massachusetts.

TP: umm...this bill is nothing like that...and....so if someone can't afford it, then they're gonna be fined! impeach obama and repeal it! hitler!

ME: the reform bill eliminates the penalty if you can't find coverage above 8%, and provides subsidies to with low incomes. it also creates very soon a high-risk pool so people with pre-existing conditions who still can't find affordable coverage, will have help.

TP: so what, premiums are still projected to increase...it's all lies, obama is trying to screw the middle class.

ME: projections for premium increases by the CBO are much less than we have been experiencing in the last decade.

TP: american flag, red white and blue baby! yeah! obama said he'd end the iraq war and he's not and he's sending more troops to afghanistan.

ME: that's nice, obama never campaigned on immediately withdrawing our troops from iraq. he campaigned on leading our country wisely instead of making rushed decisions based on fabrication. He has set up a timetable for withdrawal which thus far is on target. The GOP supported the increase in troops in Afghanistan.

TP: all you leftist morons are retarded. obama said he'd never drill but now look! take that libs! haha

ME: for what it's worth, I am a registered independent and really am pretty centrist. Obama actually said numerous times while campaigning that the option of opening up waters must remain open. He is supporting more nuclear energy and clean coal while also investing in alternative energies to make us more energy independent.

TP: global warming is a lie! you stupid idiots will believe anything. you're trying to bankrupt america and make us spend money so al gore can get rich.

ME: huge amounts of data support the contribution of human consumption to global warming. even if not reality, is it not a good idea to reduce consumption, making us more economically stable in the face of a future oil crisis? increasing efficiency and green energies will also reduce pollution in the world that our kids will inherit.

TP: socialist! tree hugger! obamanites! i didn't vote for this obamanation! yeah! and the financial collapse happened after dems took control of congress! take that!

ME: the majority was only 51-49 in the senate with 2 of the 'democratic' majority as independents, and with 'blue dog' dems and bush who would veto, any truly democratic bill on regulating wall street had no chance. less regulation is a staple of the gop. even now, many republicans are against it or are even for less regulation.

TP: you fools! yeah we're gonna show you this year! obama isn't even a citizen. impeach! socialist! how do you like that liberal morons. jibber jabber...

ME: Sigh!

The economic meltdown that happened 15 months later was in what part of the economy?
BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES!!!

THANK YOU DEMOCRATS for taking us from 13,000 DOW, 3.5 GDP and 4.6% Unemployment... to this CRISIS by (among MANY other things) dumping 5-6 TRILLION Dollars of toxic loans on the economy from YOUR Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac FIASCOS!

So when you want to blame Bush...

REMEMBER JANUARY 3rd, 2007.... THE DAY THE DEMOCRATS TOOK OVER!

many of the 'tea partiers' who so vehemently oppose the health bill also supported spending hundreds of billions on a war that was based on lies and fabrication, but are against doing the same to save tens of thousands of american lives each year. ironically, they would rather put more power back in the hands of the big corporate health insurance companies...these characters aren't those making over $500k who will pay slightly more taxes, but their instigators are financed by big corporations. the original tea party stood against corporate oppression against ordinary colonists just to line their pockets a bit more. today's tea party is nothing but a farce, a big contradiction full of bigotry, hate, racism and plain ignorance. most of them stood by with barely a peep as bush supported $700 billion to bail out the banks, as the corporate elites threw their support behind it. when we want to spend a comparable amount making healthcare accessible to 30+ million citizens and ending the most despicable insurance company practices, suddenly the sky is falling.

remember, the gop also completely ignores the fact that the nonpartisan congressional budget office estimates a reduction in the federal deficit by $140 billion while bringing healthcare to tens of millions of americans who currently cannot afford it or are not able to buy because they have a pre-existing condition. if the estimate had been in the other direction, no doubt the gop would have used it to kill the bill.

putting the gop back in control of congress will set us back years again. they have no new ideas, just the same failed policies that put us in this mess...less regulation, more power to big corporations, unpaid tax breaks for the wealthiest and wars, while continually screwing the average american

And what else did the CBO report. Why do all of you libs leave out the fact, that the CBO reported insurance premiums will rise.
by jt92202 April 5, 2010 5:27 PM EDT
I take it you have been to a Tea Party event so you really know that they are "bigotry, hate, racism and plain ignorance"? And putting all Tea Partiers in the same bunch isn't "bigotry, hate, racism and plain ignorance"

Because that would be the right way to make sure what you think you know is what you really know!
