Ben Stein Likes Health Care Reform, Mostly

By

(CBS)  CBS Sunday Morning Contributor Ben Stein on why he supports health care reform, for the most part ...

Unless the unexpected happens, we're about to get some major changes in health care.

The main effect of these changes will be to add millions of people to Medicaid and to give subsidies to others to buy private health insurance. In a nutshell, after this bill goes into effect -- some four years from now, many fewer people will be uninsured.

This part is pretty good. The U.S. should not be the only major industrial nation without health care for millions of poor citizens. People should not die, lose their homes or go into bankruptcy for getting illness and injury treated.

I have long believed this. More than 35 years ago, when I was a junior speech writer for Mr. Nixon in the White House, I wrote the message that sent up to Congress a proposal for the feds to buy health insurance for all of the indigent and lower middle class in the country. Mr. Nixon believed in it and so did I, then and now.

But how are we going to pay for what we are about to get? Mr. Obama plans to place a heavy tax on so called "Cadillac" private health care plans, to tax them as if they were income, in effect. There could also be a new tax on very high income Americans in the cards. This makes sense.

But the plan is to also cut reimbursements to doctors for their work on Medicare patients and to strictly regulate insurers.

I don't like these parts. Why should doctors, already often wildly overworked and not at all well paid compared with bankers or rock stars or athletes, get their pay cut?

And why are we beating on the insurance companies? They are not raiders from another planet. They are American companies, owned by other Americans' pension funds and retirement accounts. They often screw up, but then so does everyone everywhere. If they are going to be required to cover pre-existing conditions, premiums for healthy people will soar. Is that fair?

Well, anyway. It is a brave new world now. Uncle Sam is bigger than ever and there's no going back. America, just roll up your sleeves. This won't hurt a bit.

Hay Ben. If you like this insurance so much does that mean that you will have it to?

Mr. Stein has demonstrated some independent thinking on a number of issues including healthcare however here are a few comments.

Regarding why the private health insurance co's should get beat up I would like to say that they make money by denying claims to the most vulnerable and their CEOs make millions doing it. They need to be reigned in. Being privately owned they have every incentive to make money at the expense of those who use them.

However thank you for you positive comments on govt employees. It's very true and needed to be pointed out.

WHY DOES BEN STEIN CONSISTENTLY REFER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA AS "MR. OBAMA." I FIND THIS OFFENSIVE AND DISREPECTFUL. HAS ANYONE ELSE NOTICED THIS?

Well said petesis.

Apparently a distinctive voice and an opposing opinion pass for erudite commentary at CBS and CNN.

Ben and similar pundits broadcast their right-wing opinions with such confidence. Would they still hold to those opinions if they were born with fewer talents and benefits?

We should give Ben little credit for appearing to go against type in this opinion piece. He's willing to acknowledge that people should not go bankrupt in the process of being treated. However he can't imagine that doctors or corporate insurers be asked to give up one penny for that worthy goal. Has Ben Stein been advocating for health reform for decades? I must have missed it amid his noisy advocacy for creationism and corporations.

Some pundits are inspirational in a way they least expect.

Canada provides universal, single payer coverage at about half the cost per person. Canadians, on average, live two years longer. Don't we all deserve the simple dignity that Canada provides?

Any time someone starts talking single payer, the opposition wrings their hands and starts decrying their medical systems incompetence. Bad care, mediacl horror stories. They contrast it with our "good doctors" and great care. What are they saying, passing single payer will automatically morph our "good doctors" into Frankenseins and Mengeles?

No...it just means people will get the care they need at a price they can afford. And if the costs rise too much...Wonder of Wonders...maybe we'll put more emphasis on preventative medicine. What a concept!

Actually I believe Canadians live 4 years longer.
Must be from that horrible socialist health care we have, lol

Wake up America ....you have a really good leader in Obama. You are very lucky to have him. Repugnicans would want a leader that really has no compassion and would give you more Bush/Cheney leadership.

The pain has already begun, in Calif., and it will be felt with every single heath care plan renewal, in the future, with increased premiums, and fewer benefits.

Care and compassion don't come from people like you. All we can expect from you is to hear your complaints and see your self righteous post about what is and isn't a right.

Then when the time comes you need help we will hear you cry like a little girl and beg for help.
