Obama Appeals to Iranian People in Video

(AP)  In a fresh appeal directly to the Iranian people, President Barack Obama says in an online video that the United States wants more educational and cultural exchanges for their students and better access to the Internet to give them a more hopeful future.

In the video, the second of his presidency directed at Iran, Mr. Obama said that the United States' offer of diplomatic dialogue still stands but that the Iranian government has chosen isolation. He said the U.S. believes in the dignity of every human being.

The White House released the video late Friday, timing it, as it did last year, to coincide with Nowruz, a 12-day holiday celebrating the arrival of spring and the beginning of the New Year on the Persian calendar. The video comes as the United States has hit a rough patch in its relationships in the region, particularly with Israel.

"The United States believes in the dignity of every human being and an international order that bends the arc of history in the direction of justice - a future where Iranians can exercise their rights, to participate fully in the global economy and enrich the world through educational and cultural exchanges beyond Iran's borders," President Obama said in the video, which had Farsi subtitles.

Even though the United States and Iran continue to have differences, President Obama said, "we will sustain our commitment to a more hopeful future for the Iranian people - for instance, by increasing opportunities for educational exchanges so that Iranian students can come to our colleges and universities and through our efforts to ensure that Iranians can have access to the software and Internet technology that will enable them to communicate with each other and with the world without fear of censorship."

Mr. Obama has signaled a willingness to speak directly with Iran about its nuclear program and hostility toward Israel, a key U.S. ally. At his inauguration last year, the president said his administration would reach out to rival states, declaring "we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist."

It's been a rough road for President Obama, and there have been few signs Tehran is loosening its grip after bloody elections marred with allegations of fraud. And efforts to impose new sanctions have been slow to find unified support from U.S. allies.

"Our offer of comprehensive diplomatic contacts and dialogue stands," Mr. Obama said in the video. "Indeed, over the course of the last year, it is the Iranian government that has chosen to isolate itself and to choose a self-defeating focus on the past over a commitment to build a better future." The United States has not had formal diplomatic relations with Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has criticized President Obama as merely a continuation of President George W. Bush's policies toward Israel. Khamenei has called Israel a "cancerous tumor" that is on the verge of collapse and has called for its destruction.

Last year, Mr. Obama's message to the Iranians warned that better relations "will not be advanced by threats. We seek instead engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect."

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said then that Iran would welcome talks with the U.S. - but only if there was mutual respect.

As an American who leans towards the right, I too felt "who needs the Iranians and who cares about the Middle East except oil", until I lived and worked in the Middle East for many years. It's an eye opener to look at this country I love dearly from some geographic and political distance. In the eyes of the typical Middle Easterner- they loved Ronald Reagan "the Cowboy". Jimmy Carter will always be "the honest preacher". They will always consider George H. Bush a friend b/c he took time to talk directly to countries. Clinton was never really trusted b/c "he was everybody's friend. Ibn G.H. aka son of George H. has always been seen as the misdirected unruly son/ an uninformed modern day Crusade Pope. I don't agree with O'bama on domestic issues, but he does understand how to run the American public relations machine, and why we should Not be isolationists in 2010! Conservatives are not isolationists.

"Obama Appeals to Iranian People". Great headline. If he appeals to them so much, they can have him. He certainly doesn't appeal to American people.

Why didn't Obama do this when brave Iranians were being killed in the streets and hauled off to jail. It is a little late and doesn't go far enough in calling out the criminals who are running Iran. And I thought Obama stood up for the human rights of people throughout the world.

could it be that the media doesn't want to remind everybody that obama is still there after campaigning that he would withdraw the troops immediately?

President Obama would be beter off keeping his mouth shut. If not, he will become a lightning rod for supporters or iran's establishment.

There are plenty of people below Obama who can lend support to the opposition by constantly buzzing about everything wrong with the current regime.

I am extremely disappointed and sickened with Mr. Obama speech about justice and freedom and I do not understand why this speech is being broadcasted to the Iranian people rather than Israel, which seeks to deny Palestinians their legitimate right to self determination.

I am totally convinced that he is just another puppet of the cancerous Jewish establishment in the US. He thinks that his rhetoric is fooling the world but he is sadly mistaken. The world is not with Israel!, they are with the Palestinian people and their cause. Where is the justice for them!!

Media propaganda and political tricks will not fool educated people Mr. Obama. You will soon realize that you and your supports will be on the wrong side of history in this problem. The world is watching you!!
