Crossing a Line in the Health Care Debate?

Richard Grenell served as the spokesman for the last four U.S. Ambassadors to the United Nations: Zalmay Khalilzad, John Bolton, John Danforth and John Negroponte. He writes a blog Without the Filter.

The White House Office of Health Reform Director Nancy-Ann DeParle has been feverishly sending out unsolicited email messages to federal employees in an effort to build support for President Barack Obama's health reform package over the last several weeks.

DeParle's unsolicited emails have been regularly coming to some federal employees' official government email inboxes for weeks without permission or request, causing some federal employees to feel threatened by the overt political language.

The Department of State employees, who receive hundreds of official government emails every day, have complained about the annoying and partisan emails but are nervous to go public for fear of retribution. The emails are addressed to the federal employees by name and use the official .gov address.

The unsolicited emails also request that the federal employees take action in order to ensure that Obama's health reform package is passed and the federal budget isn't at risk for bankruptcy. One federal employee was so concerned about DeParle's language in one email that he questioned whether his department's budget would be cut or eliminated without passage of Obama's bill. DeParle uses scare tactics that some assume are meant as threats:

"No ifs, ands or buts about it -- if we do nothing to reform our broken health care system, costs will continue to skyrocket and break the budgets of American families, small businesses and the Federal Government," read the March 12th email from DeParle.

But should federal employees be subjected to partisan propaganda? What precedent does it send for the White House to use the federal work force for their partisan agenda? And shouldn't we let State Department federal workers concentrate on pressing issues like the Israeli-Palestinian issue or the Iranian nuclear weapons issue? Why would Department of Transportation employees have to worry about forwarding The White House's partisan emails to their address books?

Federal employees are public servants not partisan foot soldiers for President Obama and shouldn't have to decide whether a partisan White House request can be ignored without consequences.

DeParle's solicitation requests federal employees act on behalf of the President's agenda by making this directive: "You can help raise awareness by sharing this email with your friends, family and online networks," read the March 11th email from DeParle.

But what would happen if the federal employee doesn't act in the way The White House is suggesting? Would there be retribution? Has The White House requested that another federal agency monitor who is acting on behalf of Obama's health reform bill and who is not?

Turning the President's partisan agenda into White House directives to the federal workforce has crossed the line and should be stopped immediately.

Editor's note: The White House is disputing a claim in this article that e-mails are being sent to people who don't want them. The communications director for the Office of Health Reform, Linda Douglass, said Grenell's assertions are "inaccurate."

"Emailed updates about health insurance reform legislation are sent periodically to members of the public who sign up to receive them. No one is sent unsolicited emails. Mr. Grenell would have learned this if he had called the White House to ask who receives the emails, but he did not contact us before writing. The assertions made in his column are inaccurate," Douglass said in a statement.

On Saturday, Grinell responded to criticism of his article in a blog post at his blog Without the Filter.

"Media Matters, the defender of liberal media, today jumped into the developing controversy and debate over White House Health Reform Director Nancy-Ann DeParle's unsolicited White House emails to federal employees. Media Matters scolds and makes fun of CBS News and Fox News for highlighting the issue, calling the claims "pure speculation". Ironically, Media Matters doesn't deny that the unsolicited emails have been sent but rather they defend the emails by saying, "it appears they are sent out to everyone on the whitehouse.gov mailing list." Well, duh. That's the problem. Why are federal employees on the whitehouse.gov email list? And why are federal employees being hounded to do the White House's political bidding for a trillion dollar entitlement program?

Building support for President Barack Obama's health reform package by sending consecutive emails to federal employees' official government email inboxes and instructing them to forward the emails to their "friends, family and online networks" is not only unethical but possibly illegal.

Media Matters also complains that the story has no anonymous quotes from frustrated federal employees in order to prove the story. Which is a fair point. I'll give them that. So here are two anonymous quotes from State Department employees that didn't sign up for the White House emails but are still receiving political musings from Nancy-Ann DeParle and the White House"

I filed a compliant with HHS OIG on an email I received from Jeanne Lambrew, Director, HHS Office of Health Reform, from a .gov email address with the subject pledge update. The only way she could have gotten my address was if HHS received files from Organizing for America or AARP. Those were the only two pro-reform organizations I belonged to. I filed a compliant that my privacy had been violated by handing my email over to HHS, and that HHS had used appropriated funds to contact me. No response yet from HHS since Sep 2009 however staff at the Senate Appropriations committee have contacted me for copies of the mail and offered to follow up with HHS.

This is horrendous. I'm sick of the Federal Government thinking they can cannibalize their own employees. I thought this type of solicitation was illegal. At minimum, it is a conflict of interest and she should be fired. If this were a private sector company, she would lose her job!

Do some more research, listen to both sides of the story.

"Emailed updates about health insurance reform legislation are sent periodically to members of the public who sign up to receive them. No one is sent unsolicited emails. Mr. Grenell would have learned this if he had called the White House to ask who receives the emails, but he did not contact us before writing. The assertions made in his column are inaccurate,"

Both "example" emails" listed on Mr. Grenell's blog have an "unsubscribe" feature. Even if they were unsolicited, a simple click of the button would remove them from the list. Unless you can't believe this, there is nothing "illegal" or "interest conflicted" about this story. And if this happened in the private sector, she probably would have been promoted, not fired for "following the company line".

Furthermore, Mr Grenell lists only two State Dept. employees expressing their concerns about receiving these emails, again in his "rebuttal" blog. Unless he can come up with more fed employees with concerns, his argument is weak at best. Cry wolf if you have to, but unless Mr Grinell can come up with more evidence, it's a he said/she said affair and too close to call.

Obama's only concern is to pass this Health Care bill so that he can turn our country into a communist one. Its just the start. We wont have any rights, and whats left of them will be taken away. Who has the right to say Abortion is OK? not you Obama! or the Builderberger group! Only God should have that power. Obama is just doing what he is told to do. He never cared about us, look how he reacts to our opinion about this health care bill. OBAMA DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE U.S PEOPLE AND WHAT WE WANT IN OUR COUNTRY. He is leading us towards DESTRUCTION and he thinks that he can just save his skin and get away with it? Those that will stand up and fight for our constitution will bring all of you in The White House to justice. "By their fruit you will recognize them..." Matt 7:16

Oh yes Obama, you are not representing the people, but something else! Shame on you! Giving false hope and lying comes from darkness. May God punish you for bringing this country down!

This entire article is laughable. We are in a recession last time I checked Obama had to pass a bill the first day in office to keep the lights on in Washington cause the Bush administration had done such a shody job with our government. So instead of TV propoganda we get cost efficient e-mails sent wich are much better on the tax payers dime. If someone sends an e-mail asking for support of a legislation it's no different then a TV comercial, or a poster on a telephone pole. The way this article reads is as if noone in washington has a spam filter. They are not being held down and forced to read the letters. There are not office meetings held to inquire as to if they read the letters. Obama as the president has the right to pass legislation and call for support reguardless if republicans support it or not. If Obama called for federal employees to have drug or alcohol awareness would it be any different? Why should he have that right either? it's your life to live right? Wrong! you are a federal employee and ultimately work for the president if you dont like that get a new job. He was elected by dems and republicans and if you dont support him or his legislation then delete the e-mail. Republicans like to act like they arnt using the net to garner support or spread propoganda on their views it's really pathetic to imbue some underhanded slant on simple politics. Bush was at a school when the 9/11 attacks hit Obama says he's gonna attend a school and the parents say they dont want him spreading dem propoganda, really? bottom line is this article and many recent events are just a sign of the underlying racial tensions in this country. Republicans and their old money dont want a president bridging the gap between the haves and the have nots. Republican legislation puts money in the pockets of the rich and well off and ruined our economy and we actually have a president fighting for healthcare and what do idiotic uninformed americans do? They join a foolish crusade against it. Name the last president that actually gave a crap about someone that makes under 30k a year. Instead of alcolades he gets "birthers" instead of support he gets "The Tea Party" all just acronyms for racist white americans that dont want the first mulato president to rock their boat, you know the one thats sinking and full of holes from the 8 yrs of Bush. Republicans have shown their true colors for shure they eager to block a legislation that will help peoples general quality of life and better our government. They use the same old them vs us strategy they employed since the civil rights era. It's just tragic all the people reading this crap have their minds made up and dont actually try to inform theimselves. To much propaganda, Fox news, Affiliates ( they know better then to call themselves journalists at this point) and racism fill the media and not enough truth. They should make all the media outlets acountable for the wealth of lies and redoric they spew pass a truth in Broadcasting bill or something, but then Republicans wouldnt be able to speak for 3 yrs....

Do you say these things because you believe it or because you like getting a rise out of people by saying provocative untruths. It doesnt' appear that you've done much research, nor do you understand what is at stake. This isn't about parties, or racists, or birthers or anything but a socialist government takeover. Please, for your own sake, read and study. Don't listen to your friends, relatives or colleagues, but research both sides and all opinions on your own. If you do that, I feel reasonably certain you'll come to the right conclusion as your articulation seems to affirm you are reasonably bright. My hope is that you become truly informed as we are all in this together and I'm not into saying "I told you so". I'd rather us come together as Americans and fight to retain our independence. If you don't care to do that, you will lose it.

This isn't about "health care reform", it's about an abuse of power. There are so many items in this bill that expand government intrusion, including the IRS.
A majority of the American people know a socialist takeover when they see it. We're not buying into ObamaCare.
