Emanuel: "Fringe Group" Controlling GOP

By
Katie Couric
(CBS)  Getting health care reform passed is, of course, President Obama's top domestic priority - which means it's also the top priority of his chief of staff, the tough-talking, take no prisoners veteran of the political wars -- Rahm Emanuel.

He talked exclusively to CBS Evening News Anchor Katie Couric for this Sunday's "60 Minutes."

Katie Couric: "Do you think he stretched too far on health care reform?"

Rahm Emanuel "Not at all. We're in the final stages of getting a comprehensive bill finally passed and onto the president's desk. We're on the last leg of the legislative process."

Whether healthcare passes or not, it's left the Obama administration battered and bruised and the long term political impact is still unclear. Emanuel orchestrated the Democratic takeover of the House of Representatives four years ago but also witnessed massive Republican victories in 1994 when he was a top adviser to then President Bill Clinton.

Couric: "Do the midterm elections keep you up at night at all?"

Emanuel: "No. You won't know for a while. I think The Republicans have a level of energy but inside that energy they have their own problem and fissures. They're basically at the behest of a fringe group that's taken control of their own party and their own leaders are scared of it."

Couric: "The tea party movement?"

Emanuel: "I can give a more pertinent, a more informed answer in June and July."

Emanuel's abrasive style and penchant for profanity are legendary. He recently had to apologize when he used the term "f-ing retarded" to describe progressive in his party.

Emanuel: "I don't think I can pull back from being hard-charging or whatever. But you got to understand and be sensitive to what people are saying---especially if you don't want to offend anybody and I clearly did and I was wrong."

Couric: "So have you taken another look at the way you communicate at all?"

Emanuel: "Yes. See? I've gone five minutes without a single swear word. How am I doing?"

Couric: "Doing ok."

Emanuel: "All right."

Speaking without editing runs in the family. The high-strung, expletive spewing Ari Gold of "Entourage" is modeled after the youngest Emanuel brother, top Hollywood agent Ari Emanuel.

The oldest, Zeke, is a leading oncologist and bioethicist who's now an advisor on healthcare reform. Growing up outside of Chicago, the boys were expected to achieve even at dinnertime.

"You were expected to have an educated opinion about what was going on," Zeke said.

"Or everybody was going to make fun of you," Rahm replied.

Now the latest debate in Washington is, how long will Rahm Emanuel be in his job?

Emanuel: "Look, I don't talk about how long. And I would like to stay as long as the President wants me."

Couric: "So no plans of vacating the premises any time soon?"

Emanuel: "Listen, we're not ordering any boxes yet for the house."

Couric:Would you still like to be Speaker of the House one day?"

Emanuel: "No, that's gone."

Couric: "Party over?"

Emanuel: "That was a goal. Things happen in life and you know, I'll set other goals for myself."

Talk about fringe! We had a ZERO fringer picked up by some very serious corporate criminal types (Soros, Rockefeller, Kissinger) and that is the danger we face.

I am a health care professional. In 28 years I have never seen a single person turned away from receiving health care-never! Of course the cost of health care is rising. It is directly proportional to the new and highly technical procedures and treatments being developed. Geriatric patients are being treated more than ever before very aggressively with very high cost procedures. That is just the way it is.We need health care reform- but this bill is the wrong avenue and will lead to rationed heath care- make no mistake, We must allow insurance competition across state lines. We need to institute max awards on malpractice suits.

Health care professional blah blah blah. We need health care reform but this isn't it!!! This is the latest and most often repeated republican line coming out now that most people know the good that health care reform will do. No republican president or lawmakers have ever done anything for health care reform. They never will. Democrats are doing the heavy work getting this passed and helping Americans.

I agree. Health reform "yes"; this bill "no". This bill does nothing to address the primary complaint of the American public- the rising costs of health care. Instead, it is about empowering Washington, slashing Medicare, and dumping the additional costs on the states through increased demands on Medicaid. This is a horrible bill. This vote will not be the end of this, but only the beginning of states and legal foundations suing the federal government, businesses failing under these regulations (at a time of huge unemployment), Seniors finding fewer doctors who will accept Medicare patients, and increased taxation on the middle class. All for the President to do something historical. It will be historical, alright.

Mr. Emanuel seems to me at least in this 60 minutes interview to be a fine gentleman contrary to what I have heard. Of course I grew up in Upper Manhattan and from there spent five years living in Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn in a tenement behind a police precinct. Having said that I am sure that what we should be concerned with as Americans of any political persuasion trying to help our President succeed is revamping his advisement gallery and going much higher in intellect, education and track record. I am not so sure that hiring an advisor means that they have to be political at all. As an aside, the individuals that went over the line and were terminated indicates the need for more background investigation. Let's face it you may dislike Henry Kissinger and Dick Cheney but you have to admit that they had that knowledge and ability as global analysts that Obama is missing. Why do we not get a PHD Fellow from Harvard, an author to work on this damaged economy? How about a Rand Company expert on nuclear proliferation? Obama might get re-elected if he had the proper advisors behind him. As far as Mr. Emanuel is concerned,
because he appears to be personable and persuasive, we could use a great Press Secretary.

From their conservative spokespersons, Lush Limpbrain, Savage Sam, Sorry Palin, Glenn Wreck, Manne Coulter, Fraud News and other lunatics down to the sorry Mad Hatters that make up the teabaggers, the Republican Party is being led (actually misled) by a pile of world-class loonies. It has become a far-right wing radical party lead by out-and-out crazies. The GOP is now bordering on Fascism (Socialism for a select few--with the Nazis it was solely race).

The looney fringe groups on both sides of the aisle are now running our country. The sheep-like congressmen of both parties are now representing their sheep-like constituencies. It is an exercise in Xtreme Politics.
