Tiger Woods Left Mississippi Too Soon

By
Sean Alfano
(CBS)  Of all the advice Tiger Woods supposedly was fed during his sex addiction rehab stint at a high-priced clinic in Mississippi, courage apparently wasn't on the menu.

Had Woods stuck around the Magnolia State, he could have gotten the lesson for free.

Constance McMillen, an 18-year-old lesbian student at a high school in Fulton, Miss., returned to class Thursday amid a firestorm surrounding her wish to bring her girlfriend to the prom.

Earlier in the week, the Itawamba County school district nixed the prom altogether, saying the controversy had become too big a burden.

How sad that educators, instead of teaching young people a valuable lesson about inclusion, decided to squash the issue altogether.

Then again, maybe they took their cue from Woods, who turned invisible for nearly three months after his Nov. 27 car crash outside his Florida mansion, which ignited endless rumors, quickly proved to be true, of extramarital affairs.

When Woods surfaced, he did apologize to his family, friends, colleagues and most importantly, his sponsors, but he refused to take questions. Not difficult when you hand-pick your audience with adoring reporters and other sycophants to witness your televised "I'm sorry."

Woods took the time during his public apology last month to implore the media to respect his privacy, but so far has done little in the way of facing all the people he embarrassed.

"Every one of these questions and answers is a matter between Elin and me, issues between a husband and wife," Woods said.

Totally valid. Totally weak.

Even better, Woods has spent months with handlers hired to massage the negative attention. Rumor has it he's close to scoring Ari Fleischer, George W. Bush's pitchman for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, to do his PR.

And if anyone believes his possible return to golf at the Masters suffices as facing the music, let's not forget that despite Augusta's magical aura, at heart it's still an all-boy's club, inaccessible to women.

Doubtful you'll hear Woods - a man whose behavior indicates he views women as cheap toys in a vending machine - call for that ban to be lifted. Back in 2003 when there was a strong push to overturn the just-for-men rule, Woods told reporters: "It would be great if we could just play a golf tournament again, but that's not the reality of it."

Some things never change, Tiger.

Minus the money and entourage of admirers, Constance McMillen didn't flinch in the face of a few hundred peeved teenagers. She returned to school and called for the prom to be reinstated.

McMillen told "The Early Show" Friday the mood at school was "hostile" and "silent" since the prom's cancellation.

Still, the teen has no regrets over her stance. "That's how I was raised," she said. "I don't know how everybody was raised, but that's how I was raised, to always be yourself and be proud of who you are.

"And it's like they're asking you, like for prom, you can be gay, just don't be openly gay, just hide it for a little while."

Unless a decision is made soon, it's likely the nation will soon forget McMillen's courage and the school district's ignorance.

One PGA golfer put it best when asked his opinion of Woods' possible return to the links: "You want my honest answer? I could give a f---."

Sadly, that's more likely the response Constance McMillen will receive as she pursues her simple desire to bring her girlfriend to the prom.

This writer is an arrogant idiot. These two situations have no connection and Tiger Woods doesn't owe anybody but his wife any explanations. Whatever one thinks of his behavior is irrelevant. It's none of our business. This guy is no journalist. He's a self-important wannabe!

As a gay man living in MS,I feel more comfortable and safe living in the South than I would in Chicago,San Francisco or NY. The people of this state don't deserve the mean spirited comments that I've read coming in from all over the country, especially from people who have never been here. Regardless of what you've heard, gay men and women don't live underground here. Many of you have a preconceived notion about MS and nothing will change that. The far left fringe is spewing hate at the very ones they accuse of hating.

Sean Alfano needs to spend a couple of years in Mississippi learning how to write. This was the sickest garbage I have seen in a while. Tiger Woods is a celebrity and possibly is fair game but Constance McMillen is a teenager who does not deserve the additional publicity that a poor writer with an inflated ego bestowed upon her. The editor, if CBS News still has one, that allowed this garbage to be posted must have been sleeping off a hangover of some sort.

How brilliantly and accurately stated!

And I suppose these cheap toys are mindless and have no free will and were tricked or coerced.... or just maybe they aren't and viewing them as so ignorant and helpless is the greater insult to women.

Thought you were going to say he could have tried it on with her.

We used to say 'the kids just trying to get attention'. Now it's headlines.

Um, that is completely lame...linking Tiger Woods to this story. Really? That's as bad as the old bait-and-switch "SEX...now that I have your attention..." Please, has some baseline journalistic integrity, even if that concept makes your eyes tear-up.

Sean Alfano - Your attempt to associate two different issues is a complete failure. Trying to read your logic in this article is akin to trying to read an article written by a dyslexic drunk. This article gets an F. Go stand in a corner until you can admit to yourself you should find another day job.===

I could not agree more that Sean Alfano is trying to connect Tiger Woods to this story in an effort to receive as many readers as possible, for all the wrong reasons. Tiger Woods has nothing to do with this article, and Mr. Alfano is grasping at straws linking him to this story, only to receive more hits for cbs news. I wish CBS news would fire nitwits like this, who should be writing for a cheap tabloid or bagging groceries at a supermarket. Unfortunately, it seems most news agencies are trending this way, making references to anything destined to pull in hits, rather than reporting anything actually newsworthy on its own merit.

CBS should fire Sean Alfano. To relate Tiger Woods to this story just to get "noticed" should be a terminatable offense. I will stop all of my viewing of anything CBS related until I hear of Sean's departure.
