Less Tropicana O.J. For Your Buck

By
CBSNews
(AP)  PepsiCo says it's raising prices on its popular Tropicana orange juice because of the deep freeze that hurt much of Florida's citrus crop.

The company is shrinking its most popular size by about 8 percent - while maintaining its price - and raising prices on another size starting in May.

The 64-ounce container of orange juice will shrink to 59 ounces. The suggested retail price remains $3.59.

The price of Tropicana's gallon container of pure premium orange juice will rise between 5 percent and 8 percent. Right now it costs $6.49.

Citrus growers in Florida - the nation's top orange producer - lost more than 4 percent of their orange crop because of freezing weather in January.

They would raise prices, whether they need to or not, simply because the weather gives them an EXCUSE to do so.

PepsiCo's announcement is premature, at best, and is a good indication that they are simply raising prices for higher profits, because they have an excuse to do so. Not what I would call, being a good corporate citizen.

Growing up in Florida, I know my citris. Tropicana is junk and Florida natural has the best quality. (www.floridasnatural.com)
I've lived in Alaska for 6 years and the only taste of FL I can find is FL natural OJ. I hear the pack size is increasing to 96oz!

oh yeh like profit is a bad thing

=============

No kidding, we cant have our society as whole questioning the premise of a profit motivating everything even if it is not in the best interest of The People.

I mean really, we could create a mini boom in the Market by killing all labor, product safety and environmental regulations. Hell, lets open up everyone's backyard to oil drilling.

Yeah, and bet ten bucks they NEVER go back to the larger size again and keep the price as it winds up at.
I dont know about anyone else but I'm sick and tired of the sneaky fraudulent practices of reducing container SIZES on the sly. Ive seen a brand of yogurt go from 8 oz to 6 and the price stayed the same, these dinky 6 oz cups are useless! what's next, 4 oz sample size now?
Going from 8 oz to 6 oz is the same as raising the price 25%, that's a 25% price hike, explain that one!

Remember according to official government statements "There is not any significant inflation!" I guess shrinking the size of what you get is not the same as raising the price.

Returnable bottles, run through a dishwasher and refilled, had advantages long since forgotten in our throw-away society.

Yes, of course. Charge consumers more and give them less to maintain corporate profits.
