No Fix? Trouble with Some Repaired Toyotas

Some Toyota owners say they are still having trouble with unintended acceleration after their recalled cars were repaired, and the Transportation Department said Wednesday it is looking into their complaints.

David Strickland, the administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said in a statement the agency is reaching out to consumers about the complaints "to get to the bottom of the problem and to make sure Toyota is doing everything possible to make its vehicles safe."

"If Toyota owners are still experiencing sudden acceleration incidents after taking their cars to the dealership, we want to know about it," Strickland said.

NHTSA has identified ten post-recall allegations of unintended acceleration and continues to screen incoming complaints, an agency spokeswoman said late Wednesday.

The government has received a limited number of acceleration reports from the Toyota owners whose floor mats or gas pedals have been fixed but the fresh complaints raise new questions about whether Toyota's remedy will solve the problem. Toyota and the government are investigating potential electrical problems as part of the Japanese automaker's recall of more than 8 million vehicles worldwide.

NHTSA has linked 52 deaths to crashes allegedly caused by Toyota's acceleration problems. The company has blamed mechanical causes or drivers pressing the wrong pedal and repaired about 1 million vehicles, but has said it is looking into electronics as a potential cause.

Toyota did not immediately comment on the new complaints.

Stewart Stogel, 49, said his 2009 Camry accelerated to about 15 mph (24 kph) on a street near his home on Saturday, five days after a dealership trimmed the gas pedal and installed new brake override software as part of the floor mat recall. The car didn't stop for several seconds even though he pressed on the brakes. Stogel said he barely avoided going down an embankment and hitting a wall. a wall and nearly went down an embankment.

"At first the brakes didn't engage at all," said Stogel, a freelance journalist. "Just as I approached Terrace Avenue, the wheels were able to get some traction, and all of the sudden the engine did disengage."

Stogel said the car had accelerated two previous times, and both times Stogel said he took it to dealerships to be checked. In one case it was inspected by a Toyota corporate technician who could find nothing wrong, he said.

After the latest incident, Stogel called his dealer, who told him to return with the car. He also left a message with Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. President Jim Lentz. On Tuesday, Stogel's dealer called and asked him to return with the Camry so Toyota engineers can inspect it.

Carolyn Kimbrell, 59, a retired office assistant, said her 2006 Toyota Avalon accelerated last weekend as she pulled up to her mailbox near her home - about a week after the car had been fixed. Kimbrell had just returned from a shopping trip to the mall with her 9-year-old granddaughter.

Kimbrell's car dealer on Feb. 20 inserted a small piece of metal into the gas pedal mechanism to eliminate friction that was causing the pedal problems. The dealer is scheduled to provide a separate fix to prevent the accelerator pedal from becoming trapped in the floor mat. But now Kimbrell said she wonders if the company's fix will solve the problem.

"It just scares you," Kimbrell said. "If I had been trying to stop at a busy intersection, that would have been bad."

The recalls have prompted three congressional hearings, hurt Toyota's safety and quality reputation and generated death and injury lawsuits. Federal prosecutors in New York are conducting a criminal investigation into the recalls and the Securities and Exchange Commission is probing what the automaker told investors.

Toyota on Tuesday said its U.S. sales fell 9 percent in February but it would offer repeat buyers two years of free maintenance to help rebuild customer loyalty.

During congressional hearings, Toyota executives said all new models sold in the United States will have the override system by 2011 and many recalled vehicles will be retrofitted with the brake override as a precaution. Toyota said it has fixed about 1 million recalled vehicles.

True in some situations LIERLIERE some people might make up a story for a quick payoff. But also you see solid support for Toyota in this time of uproare against Toyota; maybe your part of this support! I respect anyones views and have a open mind as well. But when you have facts about the sudden surge in speed with no input from the driver, but also no record of fault codes to back up the events it is easy to blame the driver. But true events are comming up and there is a issue with some Toyotas. Toyota also seams to be beatting around the bush and trying to put this issue behind them. I sapose if you feel Toyota is right and everyone else is making up stories LIERLIEE go ahead and buy a Camery. Be shure you have some holy water with you if your car takes off on its own, because Toyota wont back you up.

Toyota increased MPG numbers with the prius but more impressively they found a great way to be #1 in DBP too. What is DBP you ask? Well it's Death By prius of course! I do not capitalize the name because it doesn't deserve even the most basic gesture of acknowledgement. Is it coincidence that it also resembles a Pinto? I think not my friends. Here we are going after bad guys in Afghanistan while our country is being compromised with tens of thousands of insurgent death machines. Mr. president, I urge you to wage war on Toyota before they flip the master switch and wreak havoc on us with all these priuses? prii? prius-cars? How do you pluralize such a dumb name anyway?
Oh and to answer goupi514's question with one word... Yes! Collectively, prius drivers are the worst (a valid fact) but they didn't conspire. Toyota simply made it appealing to most tree huggers. They don't require proof, just a pretty emblem (made from smelted nickel) with a cute green leaf on it. Awww, I just felt warm and fuzzy inside the very second I typed the word "green."

Like to see Toyota find a way out of this recent news of fixes not working. How nobal of them saying we will look into the electronics as a possible issue. Just kissing you know what to save themselves from a financial meltdown. For weeks even the prsedent of Toyota said along with Toyota, its the floor matts and sticky gas peddal. Adding to isulting Toyota owners, putting some recks to blame on the owners. Nice way to say our product has some issues, but we will blame the driver instead. I for one will work for a living, not by destroying my own car to make a buck. This I feel is the view for most of Americans. I have said this before, Toyota has a Serious Problem and they need to find a solution fast. I have aa 2007 Dodge Carvan with eratic idle in 2009, it took a Dodge Dealership three days to find and fix the problem. A faulty computer chip inside a Powetrain Controll Moduale I was tolled was to blame. A $800:00 fix that was coverd under waranty. I see also if this for once is a finnal fix being a Electronic Issue, Toyota might be done for it. Shame on you once, shame on you twice, shame on you third time, goodby!

Did you here of this woman that she is blaming her Toyota for her accident 2 years ago and she has no record on file of issues before that with her Toyota, see how people are looking to make up stories, this totally smells, so wake up eebrr.

Some time ago I posted that only loyal Toyota's customers would believe that the issue with sudden acceleration would be caused by either a stuck mat or a stuck gas pedal. These two would probably cause the car to keep the same speed and not return back when the pedal gets released but no sudden acceleration. The cause to me is electronics and rest on the cruise control. If you have used the cruise control you know what I am talking about; when you use it and set the speed to for say 65 mph and then you need to brake it gets disengaged, say your speed went down to 40 mph, if you resume the cruise control the car would accelerate "by itself" to reach the previously set speed of 65 mph; this is sudden acceleration. Of course, and this is a guess, it is more expensive fixing electronics than removing mats and adding a $1 shim.

Wow! here we go again with more Toyota unintended acceleration complaints where do you find these people?You can't be serious.I can't believe what I am hearing,don't you people think you have done enough damage just over speculation, because someone put aftermarket mat's in there Lexus killing all 4 people.You people complaining are looking for someone to blame for your accident or traffic violation or you want to blame someone for your future mishap.Stop blaming Toyota for your mistakes people,after all Toyota is going to fix your so called problem which never existed anyway at least with the car anyway.Why is our Government and there Attorney's trying to stick it to Toyota?I know,they own G.M and Toyota isn't Union.Did you ever think that out of all these complaints how many are driver error,I would bet all of them are driver error.Maybe instead of trying to find the problem with the car they should investigate the person complaining then they will see how stupid all this is.Does our Government,there Attorney's and the American public who are complaining know how many people work for Toyota of North America? over 180,000 and thousands more indirectly.I have been driving Toyota's for over 11 years and I have never seen a runaway Toyota have you?

Do you have to see everything to believe it, or are you saying the 911 recordings, witness testimony, and formal written complaints to NHTSA are all fabricated? Let's hope it isn't the later, because Jim Lentz, Akoi Toyoda and Yoshimi Inaba have plainly admitted there is something wrong with their vehicles, but they haven't pinpointed it yet. They are using the excuses about floor mats and sticky fuel pedals as diversions.

I bet the auto insurance companies are anxiously watching all this unfold with dollar signs in their eyes and drool dripping from their mouths as rate increases are being calculated and about to be handed down to millions of Toyota owners. If the car manufacturers don't get you, the insurance companies will.

How dense can someone be to not realize that the problem is indeed with the car? What, do you guys defending Toyota really think that all the bad drivers in the world conspired to buy the same cars? Or that the company is recalling millions of cars for no reason?

What's scary is that I'm not convinced that Toyota knows what's causing all the malfunctions. Honestly, the cars have braking problems, acceleration problems and some even steering problems. Everything that makes a car a car is malfunctioning.

... and if they don't figure it out think of the hazards all these millions of Toyota vehicles on the road now could cause. like any vehicle they become less reliable and increasingly susceptible for recurring problems as the components and mechanisms wear and age.

Wait a second when was the last time you have seen a runaway Toyota probably never.This stuff really smells, someone is truly looking for an reason for there driving error and our Government is trying to run down Toyota to help there American Union workers.

As a Toyota Camry owner I am aggravated by all of this lies from Toyota. Last year our car bursted in flames while driving! My car was inspected by a technician who believed it was the oil hose that leaked casuing it to end up on fire. There was no recalls when this happened, we even tried to get the vehicle fixed. As the year went on, Toyota started recalling the Camry's. Unfortunately mine has all the defects that its recalling, such as the oil hose and throttle. Not to mention my vehicle is a 2002, so this problem has been going on for a good while. You don't feel the full effects of the car problems unless you own a Toyota vehicle.
We have started our own complaints so that a full investigation can be done, and what happened to us doesn't happen to anyone else. Any information in regards of steps to take would be helpful.
