Shock-Jock Howard Stern Skewers Jay Leno

Howard Stern toned down his usual radio schtick, but made no bones about his dislike for Jay Leno during an interview on The Early Show" Tuesday, the morning after Leno returned to his role as host of "The Tonight Show."

Asked for his take by co-anchor Harry Smith," Stern launched into a no-holds-barred, blistering attack on Leno.

"Just the mere mention of Jay Leno's name makes me want to vomit," Stern said from his studio at Sirius XM Radio, adding that others in show business are afraid to criticize Leno, but he's not.

Stern said Leno "seems to be the kind of showbiz animal who won't let go." Noting Leno had worked on "Tonight" 17 years before being "fired" and put in primetime when Conan O'Brien took over, Stern asked Smith, "What would you do, as a man (if you got fired)?"

Stern said "a man" would move on to another network and try to beat David Letterman and O'Brien, but Leno stuck around and proceeded to bomb in the 10 p.m. timeslot.

On any possible return by Stern to regular radio, Stern said, "I don't miss free radio at all."

And when rumors he might replace Simon Cowell on "American Idol" came up, Stern didn't quash them, saying he wouldn't turn down "100 million" "in this economy."

  • Quick Poll
Will Jay Leno move "Tonight" back to first place?
 Of course
 No way
Leno ruled late-night TV until NBC replaced him with O'Brien. Ratings for "Tonight" suffered, and Leno's primetime effort was a ratings disappointment. Letterman grabbed the late-night ratings lead.

NBC tried to move Leno back to his old timeslot and O'Brien to midnight, but O'Brien balked, so NBC bought him out and announced Leno's return to "Tonight."

But the moves sparked an on-air feud between Leno and O'Brien, with Letterman adding barbs about it, as well.

Now, industry insiders are waiting to see whether Leno can reclaim the late-night crown and restore what had been the longtime perception that he was a genuinely nice guy - an image that might have taken some hits during his broadcast squabble with O'Brien.

Leno did not steal this stuff from Stern. Both stole it from Steve Allen. Steal from the best! I don't actually have a television, but I used to, back when it was good.

Stern is a dirtbag? Unlike all the people you hypocrites look up to that live closeted lives and have to be exposed like tiger woods and charlie sheen. At least Howard is faithful to his wife and doesn't beat her, despite the character he plays on the radio you morons are so upset by. You are all sheep, its so easy to say something bad about someone when you can spew out other peoples comments and not have an original thought in your empty heads. And why is anybody defending Leno on a cbs website. Jay is not funny, he is boring and it sucks that he moved from 10 o'clock because now I have to wait until 11:30 to fall asleep.
Bababooey to you all

I always liked Jay and was surprised NBC would replace a guy who was number one in late night ratings for so long. The whole thing was a giant mess created by goofy corporate wackos who are so consumed with the popular "continous improvement" style of running companies that they will destroy what works to try and "improve it." It's the same in all big corporations.

So many of these comments are right on...Stern is a scub-bag. Why he is allowed to be on any radio waves is beyond me. He is nasty, trashy and I have watched parts of about 4 of his TV shows. No wonder he is off TV...Stern needs to be put on a deserted island, by himself, forever..what an idiot...and this guy gets paid to be an idiot...so that makes his boss and idiot too...

First of all just want to say I will no longer watch CBS Morning Show. When you have someone like Mr. Stern (I use the term MR. very loosely) and then have a professional Mr. Harry Smith laugh and think everything this person has to say negative about someone else newsworthy and funny. You have lost all crediablity, go back to basics, unbaised news and turn your show around. It is no better than the aforementioned show. You did a diservice to all. And Harry grow up!

Howrd is just saying what others won't say publicly. Leno came across looking like a goon and a chump. He'll be fired within two years.

Howard Stern is without a doubt, the nastiest, most disgusting thing ever to appear on TV. The few snippets of his show that I ever happened upon, made ME want to vomit! He seems to have a total preoccupation with male genetalia, porn, and other vile topics. This guy should be barred from the public media on ethical standards. Leno is probably one of the most decent individuals in the entertainment business.

Stern: You have too much baggage. You need a haircut, lobotomy and lots of facial cosmetics. You have too much time on your hands. Money is not success. You hide behind a microphone. Maybe the aliens will listen to you. Take your buddy Letterman back to Israel. Leno: well-dressed, well-mannered, intelligent, popular, funny, on TV--live, livng color & 3-D, not biased, not a loud mouyh, real--not a phony, a good & decent man, a proud American.
