Thailand Orders Seizure of Thaksin Fortune

(AP)  Thailand's highest court has ruled that ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra concealed his assets while in office and abused his power for personal gain, and ordered the seizure of 46 billion baht ($1.4 billion) of his $2.29 billion in frozen assets.

The Supreme Court ruled Friday that "to seize all the money would be unfair since some of it was made before Thaksin became prime minister."

The verdict brings an end to a case that started after Thaksin was deposed by a 2006 military coup for alleged massive corruption and abuse of power.

Security was tight around the courthouse amid government fears of violence from Thaksin supporters.

Thaksin Shinawatra was a crook. Regardless of who likes him, the money was stolen from the people and the country, so it is logical for the Thai government to seize it and try to use it to help better serve the people. At least that's their current story. If I had to move to a foreign country, Thailand might be a good choice. Certainly better than most other Asian countries and probably as safe, if not safer than most of Europe. Besides, Thai food is really, really good.

Whenever I think of Thai food it always reminds me of scrambled refrigerator contents.
